Nope, it's a cracked close nipple.

And it's rusted too. ;D And sitting on the hood of a tractor.

Yes, it's made of wood, and really old. The hole through the middle is about an inch and a half.

Let's hear more about the hose you would connect with that. :D

How about the nipple that goes into a cask that you put the spigot onto.  Seems to me that they would have used wood instead of metal, since metal was a lot more expensive.

QuoteHow about the nipple that goes into a cask

Hey Ron!   I like that.  At an inch and a half ID, that thing would have emptied a big barrel pretty quickly.  'Course filling jars might have been a little tedious. ;D

So it's a rusty, cracked, wooden close nipple?

I still think the small groves are for gripping the inside of some sort of hose. Then you wrap with wire to hold the hose on and keep the wood from rupturing. I WANT to be right!

I love whatzits! Thanks
Even when your wrong it is still fun.

Is it used for tapping a keg?

timberfaller390

I don't think it is for tapping a keg or barrel. Most wooden barrel taps are tapered and friction fit. You just tap them in with a wooden mallet.

Any traces of grease on the inside?

Dave Shepard

It is not for tapping, but is threaded. Not used in a keg. Inside is free of grease. It is not rusty, just old and dirty. I do have a picture of the piece it threads into, but I won't show you that yet. ;D
