Title: Can you help this year?
Post by: Jeff on February 11, 2019, 04:45:59 PM
I don't reach out to the membership very often, but I have something I'd like to ask of the members.

Tammy and I, in the name of the Forestry Forum, help support 4 different organizations with their internet and web needs. One of these organizations is the Coleman Veterans Memorial. It is a world class veterans memorial located about 25 miles from here. This will be the 6th year that the Forestry Forum has helped support the memorial. Tammy and I don't have a lot of extra money, but each year we do a $500 sponsorship. We also volunteer to help take care of the memorial and work the annual fund raiser. About a year ago, the memorial committee recognized our commitment to help and asked us to become board members. We accepted with honor.

The memorial's main fund raiser is our "United by Sacrifice" concert held each year, the Sunday before memorial day. Our kickoff for ticket sales begins in about two weeks for this years concert. With our $500 sponsorship the Forestry Forum gets our name on the concert t-shirts and a mention on the website.  What I would like to ask of the members is can you help our with a donation directly to the memorial on top of our $500?  Your contributions are tax deductible as the memorial is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation. Tammy and I will still give $500 as we do each year but lets see how much farther as a group we can go!

We have a special link where you can donate that will recognize you for being a Forestry Forum member helping out this great cause.  Be it a few dollars, or what every you feel you could give, it would be greatly appreciated. Lets see what the Forestry Forum can do this year. I know our members have great heart and I would like to use this opportunity to prove it to a wider audience beyond the Forest Products Industry.

I encourage you to go to the link below and make a donation, then explore the website to learn about the Coleman Veterans Memorial. I also encourage as many of you as possible that come to the pigroast, to stop by the memorial on your way or to the pigroast this summer. I can guarantee your heart will be touched. The memorial has a soul and when you visit it, you can feel it.

Here is the donation link. Donations go directly to the Coleman Veterans Memorial. Who is with us?!

That thought had, in fact, crossed my mind. My only concern is that there are a lot of caring members that go directly to a single forum and may never see this post, or the banner on the main page. I bet they would be happy to throw in a couple of bucks if they knew about it.

14 now.
Jeff I am aware that we don't want cross posting, so I added a link to my signature line in my posts, hoping some others might notice and come check it out. Thinking if a few others did that, it may help spread the word without being obnoxious. Wish I could figure out a way to make it just a tad bigger or bold.
Title: Re: Can you help this year?

There is also a  link in red and blue near the top of every page and also on the news section on the forum index page.
Title: Re: Can you help this year?

Yeah, duh. I knew it was on the main page, but forgot it would show up on all page headers. Guess I wasn't thinking. Just trying to get the word out for something very worthwhile. I'll leave the signature as is for a few months, it can't hurt.

The FF won't get credit for my donation, as I did not note that I was a Forum member.  It looks like the response is so strong, that it won't matter anyway. Nice effort everybody!

Jeff, I am just curious.  You and Tammy donated a bunch, what is the next level at which they give the forestry forum a little more recognition?  are we anywhere close to the next level.  I know that not everyone is in a position at this time, but might motivate a few that are.  Not sure if you are even able to share that info.
Title: Re: Can you help this year?
Post by: Jeff on February 12, 2019, 09:59:54 PM
We have reached the next level of sponsorship. But why stop there? :)  This isn't about doing something for the Forestry Forum, it is about trying to use the Forestry Forum to do something big for the memorial and in turn, all the things the memorial can do for others.

Done.  Thank you Jeff and Tammy for your involvement. People like you make this a proud country to live in. My father and mother are buried in Willamette Nat'l Cemetery. This donation and it's cause has a more personal feel to it, I guess that's how to say it.  And Pete, I too was stumped a bit about checkout, but look closely at the end and there is a Guest Pay Pal checkout, you need not have a pay pal account.

I count 26 now, plus of course those who did not mention it here and I will bet there are a few lurkers that are getting in there too. This is a great group and it is always gratifying to see how many folks will step up to the plate when a simple request is made. Of Course Jeff and Tammy put a lot of effort into this organization because they see the value and it's importance. I think we all see that too. I am certain more will step forward, and it is pleasing to watch.

Adding in the $500 that Tammy donated from us Saturday, the Forum and its members have now contributed a total of $2647 !!

I was notified by the V.P. that the Forestry Forum had reached a level of sponsorship this year that The forum will be a featured sponsor in several of the Radio Commercials starting in March on "The Bear" Classic Rock The BEAR! Well that there should make a body feel good! It's always pleasing to put forth some work that can be multiplied by others. It makes your initial outlay of effort that much more rewarding, does it not? Maybe there's still a few members that would like to get in on it? Perhaps some of the newer folks?
Nicely done Jeff and Tammy, nicely done.

What a weekend!   You all helped make the 2019 Coleman Veterans Memorial's United by Sacrifice Concert a great success. We do not know how well we did yet, but judging by the size of the crowds, we did well.   The weather was perfect for the concert and for the first time in years, everything went off like clockwork. Because of the sponosor support this year, the committee went into this with an upfront sense that after all the many many expenses in putting a huge event like this on, that we would achieve the goal of being able to accomplish the things we need to accomplish regarding the upkeep of the memorial for this year and be able to help with some veteran and community needs.

I'm so proud of the members of the Forestry Forum for stepping out and up. There are a whole lot more people out there now that know what kind of men and women make up the Forestry Forum. Great people.  The display of the sponsor graphic that you helped us earn that they ran on the stage video board with the other sponsor info was impressive to say the least and unmissable.

We started by setting perimeter fence and baricades Friday morning and was taking fence down Sunday night. Sunday was a long day. We were in Coleman and had main street barricaded by 6am. We opened the gates at noon with the first band starting at 12:30. After the concert, two days of setup had to be completely removed and the area put back to original because of Sunday morning Memorial Day ceremonies.  I didn't take a ton of pictures because I just didn't have time.  my job during the concert was stage front and right backstage entrance security but here are a few.

This is about a third of our Security Team with Quiet Riot. Most of these security guys I've come to know and respect over the last couple year. Almost all are combat vets and active Bikers. Bear, who is in the left rear, used to be security for Ted Nugent at one time. He was our head of security on event day.  We had a few incidents, but nothing major.

The Coleman Veterans Memorial

"What it Means"

In May 2007, the Zylman Family lost their son Casey in Iraq. They wanted to do something to honor Casey's memory. Randy Zylman, his father, served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam, and Casey also served with the 25th Infantry as a Calvary Scout during Operation Iraqi Freedom. After much thought, it was decided that they wanted to honor the Coleman Community and all Area Veterans with something bigger. The Coleman Veterans Memorial Committee was founded.

There are 3 walkways

There are 3 walkways leading into the center of the courtyard. They represent the service men and women who answered the call to duty, coming together from all directions, walks of life, and their own personal reasons to serve our nation and become America's defenders.

The outer circle:

The outer circle represents how the individual services circle together to protect our country and how we are unified as one nation and as brothers and sisters. All 5 service flags representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard are on the perimeter of the circle.

Bricks of Honor

The "Bricks of Honor" are what make up the inner walkway. These personalized bricks honor those who served our nation, and they consist of Coleman community members, Midland County, Isabella County and people all over our country who have purchased a brick to honor their loved one or friends who have served.

The Center

The center is where our memorial statues are placed. The Soldiers Cross has been a symbol of a fallen comrade since we began defending our shores. The first soldier is a shade of brown which depicts the living. He represents the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. This Soldier is walking into the courtyard to honor a fallen comrade. The 2nd is that of a Woman Combat Soldier (First of its kind) she is also a shade of brown. She also represents Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom standing beside her brother to honor the fallen. We've also placed a Military Working Dog to represent our Canine Soldiers who also fight alongside our men and women and help protect us.

The remaining statues

The remaining statues are a shade of white. They represent the spirits of those who gave their lives in those wars. It also displays how their motives were pure when they served. The 3rd Soldiers Statue is from the Vietnam Era. His hand is reaching out to his battle buddies shoulder to offer strength. The 4th is from Korea, the 5th is from WWII, and the statue in the back coming in and stepping up to the center is from WWI. They are all filing into the courtyard to honor and console a brother.

VFW memorial VFW memorial

There are 2 other war memorials in the front of the courtyard placed on either side of the American Flag. These are the 2 original Veterans Memorials from the VFW memorial. They were moved here from their original resting place to be a part of this special Memorial. Our Nations Flag is centered on the memorials. The POW/MIA Flag is seated to its left, and the State of Michigan flag is on the right.

The Statues

The Statues are facing away from you as you walk into this memorial so that when you visit our beautiful memorial, you will be walking into the courtyard along with the soldiers, taking in all the names of those who served, to those who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice, to pay tribute, honor and reflect with them. This memorial is an educational tool to show the cost we have paid to be a free nation.

We came into service as individuals, we left as brothers and sisters, as a family, who fought and died for each other.
So come and visit our memorial! In conclusion, we would love for you to come help us educate the youth, while also being a part of something special in our community.

"United by Sacrifice"
That is the meaning of our memorial. The original one stands at the legendary Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, home of the 25th Infantry Division. They have allowed us to share their memorial from across the Pacific!
Honoring those who served, Dedicated to those who sacrificed!

We keep having to postpone it due to covid, but it is rescheduled now for September 11th, 2021. It would have been this weekend. We have retained "The Guess Who" as the main act, but our opening Bands had to be replaced due to they had other obligations on that day. The new bands are great too.
