Hot up here, close to 85. Worked in woods till 4 then bucked till 6. Black flies can ruin a good day, thankfully they should be gone in a week or so 8). Looks like you had a good day.
Hot, is when you are wearing Nomex coveralls with a Tyvek suit over that, along with heavy duty rubber gloves and a respirator on, pulling wrenchs and blinding flanges in a refinery, like I was this afternoon. All because there was some lead in the paint on the flanges and the tanks we are removing. That is what I have to look forward to the next couple of days.
Was about 95* UP here today which is outrageously hot for this area during this time of year. Started at 7.30am and felled/limbed/topped/bucked timber UP until about 5.30 this evening. Calling for 60's by the weekend... I can't wait.

Talk about Hot, where I work it's always hot some times I have to wear a rubber suit gloves. It wears you out in a couple of hours. Clothes are soaked with sweat and you need to drink a gallon of water. It sucks being a fryer operator
I see from the photo that it's hot enough to be wearing your kilt. I don't know if I'd go back to the shorts until it cools off.

I know it was 85 in the house late afternoon and that was with the shades pulled from early morning and the windows open later when it started to cool. At about noon I was on a stepladder pulling the motor on a commercial kitchen hood fan. Three bad spot welds on the 1 hp motor and the fourth tore base material. That restaurant kitchen made outside in the noon day sun seem cool. I wanted to know what the temp was inside but they had removed the thermometer years ago saying that it didn't help to know how hot it was. No matter how bad you think you have it, someone else is in it deeper or hotter. I love shade.
it was 93 with high humidity, i'm not going to complain it beats what winter gives us every year. its kind of like a race horse all sweated up you just seem to work harder and faster
I can tell ya one thing gentlemen, yesterday was the first day this spring my nose didn't run. :D It wasn't all those sticky (to me) yesterday, but this morning at 3:00 am it's 65 F and 85% humidity, and dew point 59 F, makes for a very close day ahead.
I'm headed in shortly to do some milling before work. Predicted to be close to 90 today so milling at 5 am, work at 6, nap in a shady spot this afternoon!
Survived another one. Completed a work strip at 1:30 pm and hauled off to the car for the day. 2 acres in a couple hot days is more than enough. Couple more good days and I'll have this week's pay. Then there is another 4.5 cord of firewood to stack Friday. Put the other 4.5 down last Friday. ;D

I quit early, but it was because of a breakdown. Forward solenoid decided that it had forwarded enough in 5300 hours. New one will be here probably Tuesday.

That's called "superior job planning". :) The tracking number says that the UPS man will deliver it Tuesday. That means that I should be ready to roll Wednesday morning.

with the shade you have i bet you could fix up 1 or2 of those 12 volt fans to blow right down the back of your neck and that would help dramaticaly. since you got the weekend off you probably got time to figure it out. if the umberella comes off for transport you may want to think about a plug in of some type. these HOT days make these efforts well worthwhile. pc

Since I operate a portable sawmill business, really hot takes care of itself. July and August is too hot for farmers to cut, buck, and skid logs. Without shade, it's too hot to saw also. If/when I saw then, we start around 5:30 or 6:00 and get-r-done early. We'll knock off at noon or shortly thereafter. ;)
It is so hot, my chickens are laying hard boiled eggs. I saw a dog chasing a cat and they were both walking.

Hate to be a spoilsport for my area but the heat broke two nights ago. However we were so used to it that my wife is now saying she's cold and it was 69 degrees at the time. Thunder rolling as I type and the temperature is supposed to be just warm tomorrow. Second decent rain in two days and a good thing too. Couldn't cut the grass for fear of it burning off for a week. Hope everyone else gets relief before all the eggs are hard boiled and the potatoes baked in the ground.
93° here in the shade today. I got my new power feed forward solenoid and installed it. Now I can saw tomorrow. I also got new motor brushes and a new brake band, but they can just wait until I get the mill in the shade.

gotta say that while I love the heat over winters up north, the humidity makes it hard to stay at it- worked with my son on and off Monday clearing a drive way for truck access for the house we're about to start. We'd work a couple hours then have to take a re-hydration break. Even continuous water and gator can't keep up with the rate of sweat production- changed clothes three times just so I'd not slip off the tractor seat!
Good thing though is this: if you're still sweating, you haven't gone into heat exhaustion or heat stroke... and thank God for such little things... and for the pond: we put a couple loads of sand in over the last few years and now when it gets too hot, we just soak in the water. Going to build a shade structure on the bank to make it a little more habitable.
Enjoy the summer while you can: hurricane season started couple days ago, and it's about time for us to get hit again.

Today was 75 F, it wasn't too bad as far as hot out their bush whacking. Was wet though from rain last night. Those spruce needles hold water all day. :D
We had a good shower yesterday. It was still warm even while it was falling. I saw a truck hydroplane off the interstate right in front of me and stopped to make sure all were okay. I did get a little chill when I got back in my truck with the AC blowing and my clothes soaked.
My last job had no shade and this new saw location doesn't either. Thankfully, I do have that umbrella on my operator's seat.
altogether better today.80* high. we had a thunderstorm this morning and it just stayed cool all day. after a couple weeks of low to mid 90's it was awesome to be able to work and not sweat thru my shirt and everything else. pc

Last night I ran in to the grocery store with my wife. We were coming back about 7:30 p.m. and passed one of the banks with the time and temperature on the billboard. It said 102 degrees at 7:30 at night! That's just too DanG hot!
I don't know what the temp is, but the humidity here is thick. An hour out this evening yielded a soaking wet shirt. I did not help matters that I dropped a log off the back of my mill, breaking my winch off. I refuse to post a picture hoping that it didn't really happen. :(

The weather guessers have us pegged for 90 to 95 for the rest of the week. Intermittant showers with the chances increasing as the week goes on. I've been running around barefooted, in shorts and a t-shirt and so far have been able to keep from breaking a sweat. I'll have to admit that the ice tea breaks are what is really keeping me alive. I don't know what I'll do if I have to go outside. :-\

Its raining again
We had 1.5" of rain over the weekend and it's in the 60's here.
I noticed on the radio that in the 70's we had a lot of record temps, both highs and lows for this month. The early 70's were colder than the latter. ;D
Yesterday was only a 3 shirt day. A dry one in the morning, another after lunch, and then the 3rd at shutdown time. Pulling a wet shirt off is like skinning a deer.
I'll do some mill maintenance for the rest of the week. Re-weld a pin keeper, and work on a couple of clogged grease fittings. Maybe I can also check blade alignment.
It's off to Tippah County, on our Mission Trip next week. Gotta get the air nailer, hoses, compressor, carpenter tools, etc. checked out and ready to go. We'll leave Sunday afternoon.
Magicman you hit the nail on the head with the "3 shirt day". Some days when I'm working outside it's 3 to 4 changes of clothes. One thing I've learned is to wear loose fitting clothes. There's nothing worse than having a shirt that's a little too tight and all sweaty, then trying to pull that thing off over your head and getting hung up in the process because it doesn't want to slide.
Last night the sky was black on my way home. Thought for sure a good storm was imminent. Not a drop. Chance again today of 30% they say. We'll see. I just bought a dozer and a backhoe yesterday though so I'm not looking for rain. I've got dirt work to do.
Better have some "Gold Bond" to put in your drawers also. Nothing like getting galled. smiley_thumbsdown :'(

Oh DanG ...you're funny. I haven't even got them home yet. I've got to run down to South LA to get them. But I "might" be able to scrounge up some pics before then. I told my wife I'm going to line all this iron up in the field and take a picture of it. Crazy how one thing leads to another.
Thought we were going to get dumped on just a little bit ago. Black as night at 3 in the afternoon. I'm watching lightening and churning skies out the front door of my office. Got just a few sprinkles and it blew through. It's hot but I like the drying effect it has for the dirt projects. This Louisiana clay gets greasy when it gets wet. Much better to work when it's dry. :)

The dozer could use some paint. I need to do some research on paint and rust removal methods on equipment prior to repainting. I'm in them right though. They'll come in handy around the place here and they're small enough I can throw them on a gooseneck and move them behind the dually with ease.

Well I'll be DanG!(I am, ya know) Those are some nice looking machines! I'm with Paul on the paint issue. Put your money in the crankcase, and squirt a nickel into the grease zerks now and then.
I know about that greasy dirt. I wish I had had my backhoe back during the drought. It started raining just about the time I got it, and some places haven't dried out enough yet! :-\

Thanks guys. I had a Case 850 Dozer Loader with the 4 way bucket on the front and a backhoe on the back. I sold it a few years ago. I liked the machine but it had the 5 lever or was it 6 lever controls for the hoe. Had to be an octopus to run the thing. It weighed about 26,000 pounds too so it was a bit heavy to drag around behind the dually. Also had narrow tracks (16") with short cleats so it tended to "sit down" real quick in this Louisiana gumbo we have here.
I like running a hoe with Joysticks much better. It'll come in handy when those beavers have me dammed up on the bayou. I intend to cut quite a few ditches along my roads as well as crown my roads and put culverts in while it's dry. Probably going to put some haul road underlayment down as well before putting new rock on the roads. Needless to say there will be plenty to do this summer. :)
Well, we went from bone dry to flash flood warnings. Got some good hard rain yesterday and today. Ground is so hard it's not soaking in. It runs off the surface to the lowspots causing flooding. Kind of crazy. Still warm though. Just now there's a bunch more humidity in the air. ::)
I walked out at 5:30 AM to get my paper. The heat hit me in the face. It's gonna be another hot one today.
Can you imagine how rank it is down on the gulf shore right now with this heat, humidity and all that oil. Yuck.

We loaded our carpentry tools for our mission trip in the trailer this morning. I soaked a shirt doing that. There won't be any shade while framing up that house next week. I got me a straw hat. :-\

My wife and I jumped in the Truck after supper to pick up my Daughter's vehicle at the local shade tree mechanic. He had her car to repair her A/C. She's at work and has been borrowing my SIL's car all week.
The temp gauge on the heads up display said 99 degrees when we got in da truck. It was almost 6 pm.
I'm not sure where the sensor is but it cooled down to 93 on the road. ::)
Good news is her a/c is now ice cold. ;)
And it really doesn't matter where the sensor is cause it was 99 there. :) We started work at 6:00 AM on our mission project last week. From 2:00 PM on, we had to get a drink every ½ hour. I also had one of those "Frogg Togg" towels around my neck.
In July and August, I normally start sawing by 6:00 AM and then quit for the day about 2:00 PM.

Too warm for me today with a high of 74 suspose to get up to 77 tomorrow, but then cool down to 65 the rest of the week that will be much better, I prefer 58-62 range myself.
Been around 80 here since Thursday last week. The cold fronts don't seem to keep the heat away for long. Another cold front moving in tomorrow afternoon, but I think it's still going to be toasty and the afternoons for the rest of the week have thunderstorms forecast. I remember one summer back in the late 80's that was hot for weeks and every afternoon was thunderstorms. I prefer 50 and 60's weather as well. ;)

Mississippi tends to be in the front on the uncomfortability index (which I just invented)- factors in how fast your clothes get soaked with sweat and how little the sweat does in keeping you cool- thus there's also a drip factor involving how much sweat ends up inside your ears and safety glasses plus on whatever you're working on. Last summer I was foolishly trying to do some wood finishing in the summer heat- I'd sand some, drip all over it, sand again, repeat till the board disappeared into sawdust... This year I'm just sweating on rough cut lumber, tractors and trucks.
Good news: just checked the weather and it's only supposed to get to 87 F today! Must be a mistake...it's the first day of summer!! :D

Had 111 degrees on the Tahoe temperature gauge in downtown Bossier City, LA today at about noon. I took a picture just before I hit that temperature and it was 108 on the mirror temperature gauge. Tonight when I finished my last appointment at 6:30 p.m. it was still 101 downtown. This is crazy. I'll tell you what, if the South stays this hot we stand a good chance of having some hurricanes in the Gulf. That waters going to be WARM. The surface of my pond is warm like bathwater. Thank goodness it's 30 feet deep on the one end. The fish should be able to duck down there in the heat of the day to catch a break.
You guys may have heat issues where you are but here on the Canadian prairies we have Big Moisture Issues. It started raining shortly after spring runoff and has not really quit since. We get the odd couple of days in a row of decent weather and then the rain hits us again. We have had so much rain that I could not put a garden in this year and the majority of farmers have little to no crops put in. I know some of the larger farmers haven't turned a wheel and won't.
I was talking to a friend of mine earlier today. He deals with the local John Deere dealer for his equipment. One of the partsmen told him that they had gotten in 28 new combines that were ordered by farmers. Only one of these combines will be picked up or delivered to the new owner as the others could not justify the payments without crops to be taken off....
Bring on the heat.... I won't melt. :D I will gladly trade someone straight across some rain for some heat. ;)

Well, we got a thread on log stretchers and related equipment, why not one on long distance swaps? I'd swap some oak logs for the free pine logs acquired in a different thread- UPS could probably handle that but a Star Trek type transporter would be even better- worked on whales in one episode...
So maybe we could do a little weather swapping as well- you send rain, we send heat? My pond's looking a little low so a couple-ten inches of hard rain would do it good!

Maybe put your oak logs in the pond to preserve them until needed and raise the level at the same time until the rain comes.

Well its bloody chilly down here fellas started of at about a low of +20f frosty morning and hit a top of 59f clear day n nice working weather ;) :D :D ;D ;D 8) 8)

At shortly after 7 this morning I started to melt. My clothes were wet and stuff was dripping off my hands. Most always I don't sweat that much. So since I don't sweat much, it must be that I was melting. I kept feeling lighter too. Maybe some of the body fat was oozing out and dripping off, I wasn't sure. Since I was bucking up logs, I had the chain saw with me. It's a good thing because the air was so thick I had to saw it into chunks and push them aside to get to the logs. Someone shut off the wind machine too. Not a breeze. I don't think wind can move super thick air. Only explanation I can think of. I went into the drying room to cool off. Had fans running and the temp was only 115. After cooling off, I went back to bucking more logs. Later in the day, my brain fried. I was sawing a 6x6 and was making the last cut. Nasty looking slab, so I took another inch off making a nice clean 6x6, except 5x6 ain't no 6x6. Quit sawing. Didn't want to ruin another log.
Sucked down enough water and iced tea to float a ship today. Only went to the bathroom once. Now why don't it work that way at night?
About 4:30 was just getting a good start on my nap when I thought I heard a big air horn in the distance. Jane said, I think someone is at the mill. Now who in the world could that be. So I rushed to the mill with the fried brain still not working. Saw the big truck waiting to be loaded with a bundle of lumber. Brain unlocked and we got the pallet loaded. Back to nap. Nope. Once a nap is ruined, it is ruined.
Tomorrow is supposed to be hotter. Can't wait.

Well at 6:30 am this morning when I stepped out on the back porch headed to the mill it was cooled off to 80 degrees. Blue bird skies and air so thick you could chew it made for a beautiful day in the Ozarks. Got to love the South and I bet it did not bust 100 today. If'n it werent for AC there would be alot less Yankees down here. I am headed home to sit on the porch to drink iced tea and cool off for supper.
Shhh, it hasn't rained here for four days now. :D I can't say it too loud cuz I don't need anymore water.... I am already growing webbed feet. :D
Ours looks better for the next week. Low 90's and a chance of rain each day. The misery er humidity will be out of the top though. smiley_devil_trident

Now, I'm not complaining about the heat, and I'm not complaining about the humidity, but I am griping about the hot humidity! Like the man said, so thick you can't draw a decent breath to keep your head clear.
Well, maybe I'll go through a couple dozen oak logs in the pond to bring the level back up so the kids can play "lumberjack guiding a log raft down the Mississippi," or something like that. Hard to dive off the dock onto a bunch of logs, but hey, that's what being a kid is all about. :D

I spent a couple of hours in the woodshed today. (no, not Jeff's woodshed, mine). Splitting firewood I already had cut. When i finally quit, every stitch of cloth on my bod was dripping sweat. Wasn't that hot, only about 92, but the humidity was so thick it was like a fog. Took a quart of gatoraid to quench my thirst
I used to say I really liked the heat, especially compared to the cold and snow I grew up with up North. Nowadays, not so sure: went for my usual every-other-day run yesterday morning, came back with clothes so dripping wet I left big puddles next to the washer. Drank a quart of water, than a quart of Gator and then another quart of water- too much flux for the old pipes, I guess; didn't feel right the rest of the day. That was not good- had a big old pine to trim and buck. Seems my son was flying his new radio control airplane with pontoons off the pond, and managed to land it in top of one of the bigger pines downstream. No way to get at it easy- 75' in the air and since my daughter fell off a ladder couple of days ago and dislocated her shoulder, I'm real leery about anyone climbing up that high. Only answer was to take it down, which went smooth, but the plane got busted up when it hit the ground pretty hard even though the tree landed on the dam, only fell about 2/3 way to level ground. Long story short: got to finish bucking this morning and cut some dimension wood for my oldest son's new house. Got a bunch to cut- 2 story and mid-size house that we want to use all our own wood for... dreams are good to have! :)

We're on a string of mid to high 90 degree days for the last 2 weeks. The next week doesn't look much better. Get it done early! Stay hydrated! I remember my "pole climbing days" as a lineman for the power company. The best thing we could do was get wet with sweat as quickly as possible and let the body's "ac" kick in. Those rubber gloves and sleeves were something else!

Well, this is a strange deal. We are only in the 80's and the folks in the Northeast are scorching !!! Showers today and probably tomorrow prevented me from starting my next saw job. It looks to be clear Thursday and Friday.
Ya, it's 95 again today and more humid than yesterday. Only got down to 74 overnite . Too hot.
Fortunately, I have a indoor project for just this weather :)
Was 75 here yesterday and overcast, 85 today. Going to be hotter by Friday. Went through 1 gallon of water today bush whacking.
My wife is headed to NH and it is going to be hotter there then here. :D

It's been 72F at night last three nights and 85-90F by 9:00 am. We have not had a lot of rain for 2 weeks, last was over a week ago and less than an inch, we haven't had much from showers. The squash leaves wilt in the hot sun. Water is pouring out of me just sitting and drinking my coffee. :D
We got a good start this morning, but around 11:00 my 71 year old customer/helper started getting to hot. He was sweating like crazy and not really alert. We just called it quits and will start back tomorrow morning. He will have additional help then.
Bone dry. 100 degrees. Humidity will kill you. Garden is burning up. All the leaves on the little red buckeyes are turning brown and falling off. Welcome to Georgia in July :).

Sat around the house (in the AC), went out on the deck, it was hot out there but we were out of the sun!
Took a couple of dips in the pool, water temp was 86°. Stayed out on the deck for about 10 minutes and was dry again, then retreated to the house again.
Weather report is calling for rain Fri & Sat and then again on Tue & Wed, so after that, it should be cooling off some.
Hope it doesn't rain too much, we have plans to attend the Woodsmens Days in Tupper Lake on Saturday.
Then it'll be back to the sawmill.
Anyone that wants some rain had better come and get it free o'charge and take all you want.... heck take some extra. I think we have had two years worth already and we just had another thunderstorm about a half hour ago that dumped about 3/4 of an inch in about ten minutes....... time to get me that mill and build me an arc under it.... ;D Some places you can already float up to the trees. :D
It was plenty hot and humid here today, but a thunder boomer came through at 2:30 and shut everything down. I'm yet to make a full day on this job. Oh well, Monday is another day.

You just got to wonder where the weatherman gets his readings from. Yesterday he was saying that the humidity was only 42% and was 27 degrees Celcius.... I beg to differ cuz in less than five minutes of being in the sun my t-shirt was so wet with sweat that I musta wrung out about a cup of liquid. By dark the clouds had brought in another 6/10's of an inch of rain.
I went to the store in the afternoon to buy some table salt.... I shook the box in the store before I bought it to make sure that it was not all caked up. By the time I got home which is no more than a quarter mile of a walk the whole box was so caked up that the wife had to cut the box open and use her meat tenderizing hammer to bust it up some to fill the shaker..... any they say the humidity was only 42%??? Maybe inside their airconditioned office. :D :D

here in oklahoma we are supposed to be in the 90's today after some severe thunderstorms last night so i bet you can guess what the humidity will be like. the NWS doppler had at least 2 tornado's spotted in the storms that went thru here last night but we had no real damage as best as i can tell. probably got about 2'' of rain in 1 hour and the electric was off from 10pm till 2 am. pc

To keep cool in the office I have one of the really nice fans I got at home cheapo a few years ago after I saw one in TX.

It's called a blue blower and it really puts out some air. Sometimes I take it out to the mill and put it on a block and have a very long extension cord and have it aimed right at where I stand while running the hydraulic controls, and setting the depth cut.
Well as mentioned it is on the office floor to pick up cool air and shoot it out at me while sitting at my desk and writing posts for the FF.
This morning it was getting a little sticky in here, so I turned on the fan. Well it shot out something but it wasn't cold air. >:(
During the night a mouse has gotten into the fan and it wasn't pretty what happened to him when I turned the fan on...... :'(
And it wasn't pretty what happened to me as the fan was pointing right at me..... :o
I hope you weren't eating while reading this.....

To try to beat the heat, I'm going into a start early-finish early mode. I'll be sawing by 6:00 AM, and we'll knock off maybe 1-2:00 PM. That was we will dodge that really hot afternoon. It's 77° this morning.
I was thinking how hot it was yesterday also. Had to take time to bushhog some but have pretty much decided to plant some Christmas trees on the largest piece of relatively flat land we have. Slow going on the bushhogging since I waited a week too long: plants here in Mississippi are thriving on the hot sunny days and just the right amount of rain which also keeps the humidity high. Was thinking though that when winter gets here I'll be remembering the hot summer with fondness, wishing it was warmer so I didn't get so cold and have to wear clothes (more that is). Humans are great at remembering the good parts and forgetting the bad- guess that's why we let our kids grow up, stay married and keep our jobs... :D
Went to Maryland with my son Sun/Mon- bought a charter sail boat business, or at least the bank did and he will get to captain it. Something he's always loved and a chance opened up because of a logging accident. Seems the original owner, Captain Mike, sold the boat and business to his son, who ran it for a few years. Good kid and went to help a friend bring down a tree- sad part is he didn't have the experience necessary, fell out of the tree and broke too much to survive. Terrible loss that we all regret- my son knew him well. Long story short: boat sat for 7 months, bank getting real antsy, we made a deal and wham! bang! son and family leaving Sunday to take over the business, his life-long goal. Will miss him but am also very happy for him- I started sawing and tree farming in my 50's and he's getting his dream profession in his 40's, so I guess he wins too. Oh, and it was just as hot and humid in Maryland as in Mississippi- go figure. ???

I hung an exterior storm door yesterday afternoon in 99°F. Not counting the humidity or heat index. Thankfully most of that was in the shade. Took about three hours cause I was having to wipe so much sweat from my eyes and forehead. Weighed this morning on the scales, lost three pounds. I knocked back some adult beverages last night thinking I was replacing the water I'd lost. Not. :D :D :D

When I saw, I use water to lube my blade, been going through a 5 gallon jug very quickly as it sprays out everywhere, including some on me, which I don't mind at all.....

Youse guys just need to re-adjust priorities in this heat. Late afternoons are right for a little skinny dipping in the nearest creek. If the kids are around, may change plans and go tubing. Than a bit to eat...fresh corn, tomatoes, smoked spare ribs, along with a bite of watermelon. Quick nap and its time to hit the water again for a little fishing under the lights.

Up first are the shad followed by the whites. Midnight comes alone with crappie, bass, and maybe a walleye. Bout 2am the catfish and stripers move in to the action. Not quite first light and the shad leave, along with all there buddies. I leave and may give work a consideration after breakfast...naw think I'll take a nap after checking the FF...in the AC.

All seriousness aside, down here in the south, with the humidity, be very careful not to over do it. Three mornings back, I was up on the ladder, using my floor jack, lifting the center ridge of my barn a couple of inches where it had sagged. I was putting a post under the ridge board. I would jack a little, and then tap the new post on an angle slowly to vetcial as I jacked. I was stressed as the load above creaked as I slowly lifted the entire roof. As I got on the ladder to tap it at the top of the column, I felt very light headed, and almost passed out totally. I was able to step down quickly, and go down the stairs to sit down.
I got on the internet that night, and typed in symptoms of fainting. I take blood pressure meds, btw. Anyway, I had almost everyone of the symptoms....stress, heat, locked knees (I was on the ladder), and I can't remember the others.
Moral of the story: watch yourself clsely in the heat. you could pass out so quickly, you won't even realize it.

one time when i came in to peel off my shirt and get a dry one the temp was 93 with a heat index of 106.
the routine wasnt tubin, fishin, boatn, swimmin ,or fishin it was work on baler , change shirt, run for parts, work on baler ,change shirt , go to the field and bale part of a bale, too green ,check the cows , go to my aunts and cut a cedar , take off shirt and wring it out so as not to get the truck all sweatty, go home and clean up , go to the meeting house. all in all i drank about 4 gallon of water and sweated probably 7 gallon . HOT
yep plannmann i thought i was gonna pass out a time or two today also. thats when it is time to sit down a while. pc
Y'all ever seen it so hot that the grass just falls over when the lawnmower gets close? Well, that's how hot it was here today. Had to make two passes to get it all cut, and that was with sharp blades. ;D
This is going on 2 weeks in the 80's and close to 70 at night. Yesterday wasn't so bad as the woods was wet and showers, makes you feel 10 degrees cooler with water running clean down in your boots. Still got to be 80 in the afternoon. When ya start stagger'n it's time to go home. :D

Today is supposed to be the hottest day so far this year. I talked with my customer last night and we decided to wait until Monday or Tuesday of next week to start back sawing. ;) Works for me. :)

Nice. I don't go fishing enough. Always thinking about wood and dull blades. Time to go out in the Sound. The fluke, porgies and stripers are running. Maybe after the rest of the firewood is cut and stacked. Should I get another sawmill to get more work, or a car to go fly fishing? Mostly retired too. I'll let you know. dennis

Hit 99 here yesterday, 110 heat index, and I was out busting it, drinking and sweating like crazy- seems that all you end up doing with water when it's that hot is run it through the sweat glands with a little left over for the kidneys. Did get some work done though, mostly on equipment and some painting done under the porch out of the sun. Ready for that front Magic is talking about.

We got a nice rain this afternoon and some really close and loud lightning. I'm surely hoping for some cooler weather next week. I'm supposed to start out sawing Cherry, and then a Cedar/Cypress job. The bad thing is that it is 45 miles away.

Funny thing was, that bolt was only about 200 yards away. The sound was so loud that the Magicwoman and I both jumped. The flash was so bright that all that I thought about was the lightning. ::)

been there myself. during a thunderstorm at 6 am about 12 years ago lightening struck a blackjack oak about 15' outside my bedroom window. the sound was so loud that i was scared to even sit up in bed. the tree was busted up real bad.it poked holes in the roof and busted a window in my pickup sitting 20' the other side of it. the noise broke the window in my bedroom but the stormwindow was not broke. it blowed the fuses out of the box and put dents in the refrigerator 10' away with the fragments. ruined my refrigerator ,ac unit ,deep freeze, phones, tv and stereo. there was so much smoke i thought that the house was on fire.
i have seen cows farther than 15' from trees that were struck that were killed so i believe i am very fortnate. pc

a good day to rebuild a chainsaw if your in front of a fan or ac. my dad has one of those 028av's. they are tough . he bought it new and has only fell 3 trees on it. still runs and cuts all his firewood. good saw new in 91. pc

It's down to 82° here now. I think that I like it.
I finished that Stihl 028 AV rebuild. Everything went smoothly. I replaced the cylinder, piston, wrist pin & bearings, and rebuilt the carburetor. ½ pull and it cranks. :)
85 here, no change much in temps. Maybe cooler Monday with one of them cooling off fronts. I think they said 70 with showers.

I plan to start sawing by 6:30 in the morning, even though it is a 51 mile drive. I set the clock for 4:45 AM, but it never goes off. I'm always awake by then.
I don't know what the official temps are, but I look at the bank when I go buy in the morning and evening. It's been a lot better here for a few days, but when you on the way to work, and it's already in the mid-80's, that's not a good sign. :D It's probably getting to about 90 or so in the afternoons, but it's 65 right now. ;D 8)
I returned to Utah from Los Angeles last Saturday. Friday night I only made it to a rest area near Zzyzx Road, sw of Baker. I woke up at 6:00 am and the temperature was 90°. But it is a dry heat. :D
At 9:00 am it was 104° when I bought gas in Las Vegas. But it is a dry heat. :D ;D

She was a warm and muggy one here today after a 2 hour hard rain this morning. Still 68*F here now. I started a job today assembling large steel grain bins today and guaranteed you coulda fried your lunch on that hot steel. :D I burnt my fingers when I went to pick up a bin sheet without my gloves. coocoo_clock. When I came down off the bin roof I felt like a drowned and scorched rat all at the same time. smiley_dizzy I went through two gallons of water in a little over 10 hours. All in all I am plum tuckered out abd going right back for more torture and punnishment tommorow. ;) :D I'd be crazy not too for the money they are paying me. We even get to go stay at a hunting and fishing lodge first part of next week. ;D I got my camera fixed and will take lots of pics When I go.

I waited until 4 this afternoon to do what I needed to do. It was 98° and the humidity was 80%. I worked for 4 hours and was wet in places you should only be wet while swimming or taking a bath.
If I had 10 changes of clothes, they all would have been wet.
At 8pm. I went to load my truck with a couple Pine trees that had been cut by someone and left for trash along side the road. A couple pieces weighed close to a hundred pounds if not more. It was so hot. ::). On a good note I'll have firewood for my Pit when it's cold. ;)
yestarday was hot . i cut 1 walnut log at 8 am and was soaked with sweat even with 2 36'' fans blowing on me and being in the shade.
i broke down with the baler in the afternoon and had to get out the old standby. out in the sun swapin balers i like to got cooked. it was about 5. hot.even with all the trouble i still baled 111 5'x5' round bales, but lacked a little gettin done. it was a good hot day. no one got hurt anyway. pc
Looks like hurricane/tropical storm Bonnie will come through next week and change things up a bit. We will be on the East/wet side, so I will just do some mechanical work on the camper. It will only be in the low to mid 90's.
PC, din't have much fun around here yesterday either. Still got a few neighbors who pick corn in the ear, somehow they all manage to pick the hottest days of the year to shell it. Spent most of the afternoon working on the sheller, 96 degrees no idea what the heat index was but felt like 130 and no shade whatsoever :(

hot here today! woooooweee! it was a balmy 85 or so in my tractor cab with the ac runnin full blast but i wasnt able to get used to that much since i was in and out a lot. started off with a bearing out . we gave up that shade tree stuff and just took it to the shop to sweat there in front of the fan . still baled 100 5x5 rd bales today. lacked 7 or 8 acres being caught up and we have another20 down besides that to bale tomorow. the stuff is making 3 ton to the acre or so. thats 6 bales. pc
Wife finally "convinced" me to make good on my promise to paint the house- went up the scaffolding yesterday morning a couple of times and by 9 was drenched and already feeling the effects plus didn't sleep well the night before so I knocked off and did some of my "real" job at the university- somehow they figure that the hotter it is outside, the colder they have to make it inside so I have to dress warm to go to work. Government work ain't what it used to be, but then it probably never was.
Speaking of hot, took my son and his family up to Maryland to start a new career/life. He's captain of an old two-masted ketch sailing boat that runs charters out of Tilghman Island. Beautiful place just starting to get spoiled by the inhabitants of Baltimore and the DC area looking for some place to trash by buying up homes and lots at outrageous prices. DC- darkness and confusion, as the former owner of the boat was fond of saying. So anyway, get them there on Monday afternoon. Tuesday morning I'm in the bosun's chair hanging 40' in the air scraping, sanding, bleaching and re-varnishing a sitka spruce mast that had gotten a little worn sitting on the hard waiting for a new owner (which turns out to be us now). Not only do I not like heights, but it must have been 95 that day and sitting next to the bay, humidity was as high as here in Mississippi. I'm ready for fall, dang it!

Kinda warm here too, certainly more than what we are used to. I had to wash the vehicle this morning, family wedding this aft, and was soaked in sweat by 10:30. A month ago we went to Reno to find some respite from the rain. Go figure.
I'm enjoying a dry woods for a change, even though it hovers around 80-85 degrees. ;D
We were just below 0 C (32 F) here last night. Lowest night temperature registered in 100 years at Røros (old mining town 40 km from here). We are just 500 metres above sea level, and end of july is usually the hottest periode of the year. Of course we were at -42 C (-43F) in january, so this can be a really cold place both summer and winter.

Biggest problem I'm having with the heat is getting stuff done- between the water loss and the heat itself, I can't seem to keep at it like I used to; course the age of the body involved could have something to do with that not to mention the age of the brain, which like a dog's age, is about 9 times faster than the body it's in. ;) How's that saying go, all good things come to an end? or like the other thread on memory, when the day comes that you look in the mirror first thing in the morning and surprise yourself by saying, "Dad?"

It was bad hot here today, and that is all I have to say about that.
Thankfully we are now getting a little of the Bonnie weather. It fizzled, but the system is moving through.
not as hot here today. did maintainence on the equip today. fixed most of my breakdowns from last week. mowed a test patch for the sq baler, found bumble bees , 1 found me on the side of the head. that really smarts! most of today was in front of the fan in the shop so it wasnt as bad. the 1.2 inches of rain on sat night was well appreciated 90 degrees today. pc
Was 68 or so Monday with a couple wind driven showers. Hard cutting against the wind, and in the woods it just swirls in those tree tops. Some aspen 20 or so feet up only had about 4 leaves left. The wind or something striped them off. Even if we had 6 foot snow pack, no moose reached way up there in the winter. ::)
Magic is right about Bonnie- unexpected cool front moved through yesterday with temps in the mid 80's- only sweated half as much as usual. We pay for it today, though- projected in the mid-90's and I've got a bunch of yard work to open up a path so the new owners can get my son's trailer out now that he has a beautiful house to live in... >:( >:(

My Son and I finish up his home improvement project that we started in December. Now it's only caulking and painting to do. We had a big fan blowing and took many water/gatoraide breaks. I think that I don't want to know what the thermometer got to.
I calculated the heat index once today, 110. I staying inside most of the day.

You guys are getting it all wrong with the mowing grass thing. The way I look at it is that I need to cut it when it is scorching hot out. ;D That way the grass gets burnt from the heat and I no longer have to cut it for a good while. ;) :D I am so sick of mowing the lawn every second or third day. :-\ I guess that's what happens when you get the rain like we have been this year. To date we have 33.2 inches since spring break up. Normal year from break up to freeze up we get somewhere around 12-15 inches. We have lots of time for more to come yet too. :'(
Came in for a break and some water- 95 but heat index of 105. Trying to form up for a couple landings and a back deck plus steps for my son's house- seems the insurance company will cancel our insurance if we don't have steps by the end of the month. Oh, well, in this case I agree with them; 14" step to the ground is a little much for a 5' mother pregnant, with one hip baby, and two energetic young boys 3 and 4....
So back at it in a few minutes that might stretch into half an hour with a much needed nap and cup of coffee with the wife- just the coffee with the wife; as Magic said previously, we have sex almost every day- almost did yesterday and almost the day before, and might almost today, too... :D Good thing there's more to life than just that.
Drink lots of water, folks, and take time to rest under a tree some.

I'm sitting here looking at 101.3 with 43% humidity, puts the heat index around 114. I think I'll stay inside with my coffee and genealogy research. :)
My next customer wanted me to start tomorrow morning. After a bit of coaxing, I'll move the mill in Tuesday evening and we will start at 6:00AM Wednesday. It's forecast to be a little cooler. There is no shade, so we will be in the Sun all day.
Against my better judgment (I keep that hidden in the closet mostly) went out and mowed for a couple hours- nothing like tractor trance to relax you even if it is too dang hot. Now for some rehydration and maybe supper later, then my real job to work on... as someone else said in a different thread, it's all good if you keep the right attitude (I added the last part- just can't leave anything alone I guess).

With all that almost fooling around , you must be almost very tired :D.
For cool milling you should add an umbrella to your mill.
I put one on mine lately it is a small $15 beach umbrella. I just slide it down one of the two tubes that make up the mast of the mill.
But it sat too low and would have gotten burnt by the muffler. So I added a piece of pvc around the shaft and then bored a hole through a piece of 1x4 so that the pvc holds up the umbrella being held up by the board on top of the tube. To prevent the wind from blowing the umbrella off the mill, which has happened at least once, I put a bungee strap from the umbrella rib around the mill top bar and hooked it on the board.
This umbrella travels back and forth with me and covers me the engine and the control box.
Years ago, I used a larger umbrella and had it mounted differently, but it worked great as well:

I can move mine to keep up with the sun. I can also put it back on the deck over the deck table where it belongs before my wife get's home and can't tell it's been missing all day. This particular day was awfully hot. But a thunderstorm moved in around 4:30 pm just when I was finishing. Felt quite pathetic as I stood under it, holding it so it wouldn't blow away. But no one was there to see me.

Shooting for 99°F in Memphis this afternoon. Heat index will be 110°F. I finished cutting the yard just before noon. Came in showered, sat down for the noon news. Weatherman said heat index was 109°F. Glad it was news to some people.
No sawing, or much of anything else, is happening today. At 2:00 pm my thermometer which is under a covered back porch on the East side of our home read 102°. To me, that's HOT. I don't know what the misery index was.
I'll move the sawmill in on a job tomorrow evening, and we are scheduled to start sawing at 6:00am Wednesday. If it gets dangerously hot that afternoon, then we will shut it down. The customer said that there were no shade trees around.
Pulling wire through the attic of the new house today. 101 with a heat index of 108. I suppose the attic may have been a bit higher. :o :o Quit bout 1:30 to go for my afternoon swim in the lake. That was a mistake...water temperature must be near 90 now...I'll go back to the creek tomorrow. ;D

When i got out of school a hundred yrs. ago worked at mill and timber it must have been this hot then but i dont remember. I sawed for about 2 hours this morning and i was thinking darn its hot, then i thought about all those out there that have to do this on a daily basis, Wow. Its tough on me and i dont have to do it sence i am retired, but i enjoy it. You guys take care out there cause that heat can get you. Question. Why dont some of you mount a small 12v fan on your mill to help cool you? bg
Ah... You guys are lightweights. I work on ships in my day job. A few weeks ago, we were working on a ship and the temp of the deck was 163 degrees F. Next day, it was 178! The comments being passed around were not fit for mixed company. That's in the sun, with no breeze. My real job is not much fun.
Triple digits today and more of the same forecast for tomorrow. No shade tree anywhere. :-\

Pigman- you must be in hog heaven (sorry) with temps that low. Been in the triple digits here way too long. Brings back memories of my youth working as a gandy dancer on the railroad. Worst we ever had was tracks laid in between grain towers next to the Mississippi River in Davenport- no breeze and the heat just kept pushing the temp up and up. Most days, we spent more time drinking water than working and our straw boss was a mean butt pusher, too. I remember we used to get some of the high school football players working with us- job paid real well for those in high school back then- and they'd come out all full of pith and vinegar about how tough they were. Most lasted less than a day. :D That's back when I was young and dang foolish- we got into a "I'm tougher than you" contest carrying track and tie plates- crushed a pad in back and it's never healed. Stupid what foolish youngsters do to themselves, all in the name of being tough. I dread the days when my grandkids start using the phrase, "Hey, guys, watch this!"

By the way, not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but it's official now: July was the hottest month in the US in recorded history, following June as the hottest June in recorded history. Not to open up a can of worms, but maybe there is something to global warming after all... :'( If so, life as we know it will gradually change over the next few years, probably not for the better, though who knows for sure?

anyone who believes that global warming stuff shoulda spent the last 3 winters with us here in the ozarks. below avg temps and above avg snowfall. milling was impossible and all i got done most days was to take care of my cows. over 3'' of ice 2 times.
btw 1o3 here yesterday and only 108 heat index. stiff sw breeze kept everything moving and the humidity was much lower with the wind. the temp broke the record and today should do te same.pc

Drove all day yesterday in the heat. St Louis to north La. Air conditioner couldn't keep up. The cummins in the motor home started heating up anytime the manifold boost got over 5 pounds. Never seen that before. Bank sign in Pocohontas Ar said 109 deg at 4 pm. Felt like one of Magic's 3 shirt days, only I was down to my last shirt. Got home about 6 pm. still to hot to do much. Fortunately we had left the ac running in the house, nice cool 72 deg

Hey Paul, around here if we get a small rain on freshly cut hay around here it usually don't degrade the quality too much... but then if its been close to dry enough to bale and you get rain on it its a whole different ball game. Do you find that its the same where you are at?

Boy, did we ever get a break today. Slow rain all afternoon and the temps were nice. We'll run in the 90's for the weekend and next week, but that will be 10° cooler than this past week. I like. :)
We had a pleasant day in WI for a change too. About mid to high 70's with low humidity, and nice breeze blowing. Pleasant enough to be outside with a houseful of company this week. And should be good for ballgames tomorrow, but back pushing 90 this weekend and then rain forcast.

Took a break from home work to do some real work and ended up in Minneapolis for a couple of days- would you believe 62 this morning and when I went out for dinner this evening, had to wear a sweater to keep my thin Mississippi blood from chilling down. ;D I'd forgotten how absolutely beautiful, comfortable, pleasant, whatever, lower temps and humidity can be... but then, the old memory ain't what it used to be, but then I don't remember really if it ever was. ???

its a little off the subject but here goes.
i cut 2 trees made 3 12'x 12'' to 16'' logs and cut them in about 4 hours today.probably used 2 gallon of fuel total.blade is still good and sharp. the 15 - 12' 2x6 paid $108 . plus i had a pile of flitches that will make 50 pallet boards at $.32/each.and i only cut 2 of the logs. i really wasnt pushing it at all and it was fun to me . i really like sawmillin. pc
back to hot. 98 today . 100 tomorow just hot. going to try to mill a walnut log for a fella tomorow morning while it isnt so hot.pc
Only supposed to get to 94 today- guess I'll work from dawn till dehydrated this morning, then run errands and stuff... yesterday was soggy by 10 but managed to cut the back field and get it ready for fall planting. Just finished reading an article about the temp increases- it's predicted to have summers this hot and gradually getting hotter for the next 40 years. Guess I'll miss out on some of that but the kids and grandkids will have to suffer it. At least the land is paid for... :) :)

I about fell smooth out today. My mexican helper quit and said he would rather pour concrete for a living. It was his first day on the job. We knocked off about 2:45pm and threw in the towel. It was a good 3 shirt day today. I was so light headed at lunch, that I couldn't hardly chew my food. My jaws would get tired, just chewing.
After the heat index gets over 100° does it really matter how much hotter it gets?

Sold two PU loads of slabs today. One before I got out to the mill before 7:00am. There were two 5 dollar bills stuck under a cutoff setting on the deck. Later, about 2:00 in the afternoon, two guys came back and asked if I found the money they'd left for the early morning load and paid me for a second load and got it.
We've got a small stockpile of slabs we started early in the spring but they've kept us cleaned out of new slabs as fast as we can make them. We have people parking trailers for us to fill when we dump from the mill.
wish I could sell my slabs ,have to take them back to the landfill to burn.

No market here either. Most customers just pile and burn them.
I don't have all that many slabs like Bibbyman does, but I find that if I advertise them by the pick-up truck load for $5 - $10/ load in the local Shoppers Guide, I get lots of calls and the slabs get gone.
since i have the room to do it inside,i cut all my slabs into firewood and sell them delivered by the grain truck load. takes 4 big bundles to make a load . makes about 4 rick or so. i cut them up in the end of the building , pile them and when i get a call i scoop them up with the front end loader to load the truck. just dump out and the buyer stacks.costs $120 / load.

Bibby: I'm not so sure about your comment that it's all about the same above a certain temp. Seems to me I do alright at 90 as long as I drink lots of water. At 95 things get problematic- I can work for a couple hours but then, no matter how much I've been drinking, I have to lay off for a while to rehydrate. At 100, all bets are off- 15 mins tops and then the rest of the morning or afternoon to recover. So I guess you're right in one sense: anything above 100 means about the same since nothing gets done no matter what the actual temp.
Nonetheless, life is good. Monday we poured concrete for a couple landings and a full back deck with two steps poured in place. Truck driver said there was only a couple wheelbarrows left but I've been down that road before- had a 6X15 front deck for my workshop formed up just in case. We filled it up and I asked him how much he though was left- couple of wheelbarrows full, so I quickly made a spot for it- was about 1/3 a wheelbarrow left. :D New driver...
Long story short: we started at 6 am finishing up forms and building the "suspended" forms for the steps, started pouring at 11:30 and finished at about 3- all four of us down to our last gasps. Managed to hold my own with my son and his two helpers, but just barely. Took me all day yesterday to recover but now I'm ready to start work on a remodel for one of the church families. Seems they adopted all five girls from one family and need some bedrooms, so we're re-doing the enclosed garage into a two bedroom suite with bath and washer-dryer set up. Came on too fast for me to cut the dimension lumber needed- I don't like to store 2X4's and 2X6's since they take up too much space for what they're worth. We'll buy as we go, using the tried and true American motto: "Plan? We're Americans, son: we do! We don't plan."

Got through the rip-out phase and rough plumbing install yesterday- wasn't as hot as has been, only in the low to mid 90's, depending on the clouds. Did find termites in the wall- long story but moral is simple: use professionals or knowledgable DIY's if you build something you need to last, not cheap friends-of-a-friend who you can never track down after the fact >:(
Anyway, expect to pour a 3X3" concrete footing on the garage floor to keep the water out today, then build interior walls and maybe insulate the old garage walls. In the middle of the rip out, found that there was no insulation in three of the four walls- well, duh! It was an unheated garage... but then, who needs heat now anyway? Just open the window. :) :)
It was so hot and humid yesterday, we ended up taking an extra break- on the way back from big-box store, found a lady selling watermelons from her truck. Seems she had some day-old melons, 2 for $7, and that gave us an excuse at about 3 to sit for a spell. We ate one, kids came home from school and ate the other one. They are so excited about having bedrooms that they tried to help some, which meant we had to go back to work. ::) Knocked off early anyway and came home to play with the grandkids some. Got to shower and head back for another day baking in the sun and heat. Life is good! Much rather bake in the sun than bake somewhere else in the afterlife. :D

Freeze the deer first. Pretty sure I saw in Woodmizer Way someone sawing up ice blocks somewhere for ice buildings with an LT-40 so pretty sure it would work. Hope this isn't hijacking this thread talking about cold. ::) ::) ::)

At 4:15 it was 104.4. Its beginning to drop a little now. Too hot but relief is on the way.

back to a scorcher here on ok. 98 today tried to get some trees cut down this morning and came in at 1030 and it took 30 minutes to quit sweating. i guess i will rest up and go back n fetch them about 3. we have a stiff south breeze but it dont do much good in the hole in the woods. it is however supposed to bring a chance of showers tonight and slightly cooler weather. pc

My customers that I'm talking to are still saying "wait". Neither of us want to saw until we get a break from the heat. We've been getting a bit of rain some afternoons, but with high temps that just means high misery.
Herbicide spraying and then bushhogging deer food plots will be in September. I'll plant the first week of October.
Cooler weather is coming even if I have to go to Colorado in October to find it. (which I am going to do) ;D ;D
I could never tolerate that 100° humid weather, maybe dry heat like out west. The humidity just knocks me out anymore. Our summer hasn't been particularly hot, I think it's only gotten above 90° a couple of times, but man has it been muggy. I might have to start summering in Alaska or something. :)

just before i left out at 3 this afternoon twc's quapaw thermometer said 100 degrees w/ HI of 106 and 33% humidity. u guys think that a dry heat is ok but i say when its hot ..............ITS HOT.!!!! pc
Dry heat is better because we have to sweat to cool down and if that sweat evaporates quicker you cool off easier. ;)
But hot is hot, I couldn't take no 100 degrees for long and have to work in it. Time to go home. See ya. :D
Well they're calling for only low 90's today, and I'm working-- hopefully it'll be ok. Pray for me-- I had a really rough day in the heat Thursday and took yesterday off as a result!

we had a inch rain last night, drops about 1 inch apart. was supposed to be much cooler today but at 330 it was 97 with a sweat # of 103. thats not enough cooler to notice. sawed some boards early and the wife and both sons helped. finished 300 pallet boards in about 2 hours. all of us were sweatty and ready to quit.

It rained here today and might not have got above 85, which was a blessing, but I worked in it all day and that's not good for my system either. I'm already sick with bronchitis (on top of my normal asthma). So it wasn't that great, but I had to get the work done, and I was able to bear up under it, so I did.
I bushhogged until about 3"00 this afternoon. My Son and I then replaced the Bushhog blades. I'll send them to a shop to be hammered. I like that method of sharpening because it does not remove any metal. Cost about $40 for a set of 4.

On our work site there is a bar that likes to carry off gas jugs left over night. ;D I seen a few old oil jugs chewed up with bar teeth marks. Also, I seen a leather boot, some plastic and other trash in the thickets and can't think it's someone trowing trash up in the woods. Most people that litter the woods are almost too lazy to get out of the car seat, so I know they ain't lugging it up in the thickets. If it's that bar, than he thinks he's a dog. Actually, one of the guys found a spot were someone is feeding it dog food on a bate site. ::) and we are beside 100 acre corn field. :D

It's not normal by a long shot, usually down to 55-60 at night in this region. This year is hotter than normal and for a good many days it's been over 80, like at least 6 weeks worth. We often can get days down around 60 in summer and 75 is usually a warm summer day. Usually this heat only will last 3 or 4 days and cools off again.
It's been so hot that you could ring the water out of your clothes in a bucket by noon. ;D

Yes, another hot one today. 73 this morning and it's 4:30 am. Most of the woods in the province are closed for extreme fire weather. Only our area is open, but we leave at noon because......well any longer and you drop to the ground and be there until the next morning. :D
I saw at one house on Tuesday, where they had a huge bonfire beside the house and no one tending it. It looked like it was even under some power lines. Just a few yards away on the next lot is a bulk fuel station. Lord love us. ::) ::)
we had rain almost all afternoon yesterday. one lady told me at church last night that her guage had 2.5'' in it. i bet it was at leaast that much. our ditches were full of water last night.88 today will be plenty sweatty and 92 by sunday. good rain though.pc
Upper 90s here yesterday and we spent all morning filling sandbags to prep for Hurricane Earl. Got 500 filled by lunchtime, that was about all we could take :D
Up north of here in the hills of Campbelton it was over 100 yesterday. It was 90 here at noon, but dropped down to 87 when it got cloudy.
I figured out how to keep it from getting HOT. Leave home. ;) We are spending about a week in the Smoky Mountains, and it's cool. :D

Only expect to get about 2" of rain out of Earl up my way and up to 30 mile per hr wind gusts and that's with the cold front moving east off the Lakes.
When Katrina hit in here, we had gotten 5" of rain two days before off another weather system and only got 2" off Katrina. In the new year after Christmas we got another 6" of rain. I never used a sump pump in the middle of winter, in fact I never used one in the summer before either, but that 5" of water had to go somewhere, and I'm on a ridge top in deep sandy clay loam ground (light on the clay, heavy on the gravel and stones).

Paul, no injuries. Just had two trees to saw up for fire wood. Then all that brush to haul off. By the way this was my first at sawing wood from the roof of a building. Ash and red oak on top. bg

Yeah, I got up today and it was already getting light... Read and read through more than a couple hundred FF posts, then went to breakfast with BIG plans to get all this work done today... Uh huh... I got out of the restaurant, went to pick up some deer corn (for the chickens) and some groceries at Walmart and then... walked outside. Ughhhhhhhh... Someone turned on the water faucet on my face. Where did the heat come from all of the sudden? I was just starting to get used to it cooling down lately too! Well, then that big breakfast of bacon and sausage and grits and eggs and fruit kicked in, and I was headed home for a nap!
I will have to try again in the morning before it gets hot...

Leaves are drying out here and turning color. Mornings are cool as are the evenings. Fall's a coming! Love it when we get over the hump of those triple digit summer temps. Will spend the holiday weekend mowing and discing in preparation for putting foodplots in around the middle of the month.
Thermometer is stuck on 71 F. Leaves have been falling off balsam poplar and hybrids, maples are turning like they were up to the Sault. White birch trees are browning a bid because of leaf miners or something attaching the leaf surfaces. That's been going on for a few summers. We have a white caterpillar with black tuffs/hairs on the ends. Is that a hickory tussock? One of the fellas at work thinks so. I don't see that they are doing much though. Some fellows are complaining of bites from something, I think it could be the hairs on these causing a reaction making a little mosquito-like bump.

paul case, ash broke off up about 10' and was splintery. The red oak was in neighbors yard and the wind broke the top out of it up about 25'. The wind blew it into my ash tree and caused it to break off. The red oat trunk is still standing, has at least 12' or more of good in it. Must be about 28" at the butt. Will see if neighbor will let me cut it up. bg

It was HOT today, yeah. I don't know what the thermometer said, but I surely was proud of my umbrella. My helper was suffering.
It was mid 50's here and cold, cold rain. Now, Wednesday was about 75 degrees and sunshine. As luck and gusto would have it, I got my pay cut by Thursday so I never had to work in that wet stuff. ;D

Moose season is on now from Thursday until Saturday. We had to move to a new work site yesterday and there was a bunch of hunters we had to let down with bad news. No hunting on our work site, so we allowed them until 7:30 am, just after daylight, to have a chance at a moose. Well, while we were waiting for them we saw that their moose had already passed by, leaving tracks on the road as big as a work horse. ;) ;D

In Louisiana we say we have two seasons: Hot and Wet. We're in the "Hot" at the moment. Burn ban in effect for months.

In my younger days, I spend just a few days on the water front in Charteston with that kind of heat. Man did it sucX. Almost as bad as the water front in Kingsbay, Ga - about 40 miles north of Jacksonville, FL. But, the worst I was ever in, was loading stores onto a submarine in Guam. Out in the sun, standing on a black hull with the actual air temps around 103. Talk about HOT and 100% humidity. Man was it UGLY!!!!!!!!!! Any of you guys ever done very physical work in Guam? Maybe some of you Air Forces guys at Anderson?

Yep, even the breeze is hot .... when there is a breeze. Going from the house at 72 degrees out into the 100+ is like hitting a wall. I've got a big fox squirrel that camps outside our front door in a big white oak . He crawls up there and literally drapes himself over his favorite limb and just hangs there with his arms and legs hanging out in this heat. He looks pitiful. I'll have to snap a picture of him. So everyday I've been taking him a bowl of fresh, cold water out there and putting it at the base of the tree. Sometimes I even put ice cubes in it for good measure. Funny thing, I was out the other day working in the yard and he had come down the base of the tree unbeknownst to me. As I approached the tree, the flash of his tail going around the other side caught my eye. So I peak around and there's his tail and butt. 4 different times I was able to pet that squirrel! He's either real sluggish or he's becoming tame. Pretty cool. :)
Last Thursday, we were finishing up a mobile sawjob and boy it was hot!
I had a thermometer on the back of the truck and at 2:00 PM it was reading 120°F.
I had another thermometer sitting on the seat in the cab where it was shaded and that one was reading 90°F.
My favorite sawing temperature is 45-65°.
Over the past few years, the sun has really gotten stronger and hotter.

That Gold Bond really is some good stuff. I even put it in my Bassethounds armpits in the summer. We call it "Code Blue" ...can't remember how it got that nickname. We say Code Blue and she rolls over to get dusted. Works like a charm. :)

Last week I added an Advocare product to my water instead of powdered Gatoraide. LOGDOG made the suggestion and I am trying it. I used two parts of Rehydrate and one part of Spark.
I needed a better idea smiley_idea to help me deal with these near 100 temperatures. smiley_sun
I am really tired of the heat here, we have had 25 days already of 100+ temps. Last Saturday I went out to cut cedar down by Guthrie got there at 7:00am and pulled out at 2:30pm. When we pulled out it was showing 111 degrees. The official high for the day for the day in OKC was 111 degrees. Sure was hot in the trees running saws. Now that we had a little rain its 100+ with high humidity.
I am ready for fall.

Been 75 to 85 degrees here for a couple weeks, I think longer. I don't like it much hotter than 75 and prefer 60. But boy is the dew heavy in the mornings around here. Like it rained all night in the weedy places, not so bad on the trees.

I was out walking in the woods today and the water from 3 weeks ago that was laying in pools is all dried up, bone dry. Where the pools form the ground is bare of vegetation, common where there is low slope and imperfect drainage. You could dig down and there is water within a foot of the surface. These are ephemeral pools in spring and early summer for the flies and frogs. ;D

The heat has all but killed our production. Last week I'd say I got Mary and the girls out four mornings to saw for maybe a total of 16 hours. I'd get out very early and get things setup and started, Mary would come out and then followed by the girls. Our goal would be to achieve about half our normal day and then quit. I'd follow up with some other works in the afternoon and evening but my girl crew was done. I made two runs to West Plains and the "crew" found other cooler things to do on those days – like go shopping and to the library.
Then last Friday I met with a flat refusal to even saw in the mornings. We, as a crew, have not sawn since. Mary and the girls ran off to Minneapolis to visit with son Chris and wife Heather. I've sawn and delivered one small order and started doing some custom sawing. Also got in and scalled and stored two loads of logs. I've also been doing some much-needed bush-hogging and I've had to repair our dust chute tube support structure because I wrecked it by clipping it with a load of slabs.
Yesterday morning I get a call from my Mom at 5:45 am. "Are you up?" Their AC went out late last evening and it was already starting to get uncomfortably warm for them. I had to go up and check that out. Found nothing I could work on. Looked like the fan on the coil unit outside was not kicking on and the motor was hot. Drove, not walked or phoned, into town to the HVAC guy. 7:00 am and he's already open and already has a list of problems to take care of. I found a window unit and put it in and took a fan up for them. But HVAC guy got there about 10:30. Capacitor out. Had one. Easy fix. $172.54 if you please.
I was up at 4:00 am this morning and out at 5:00 but still it was too hot and humid to find any joy in it. At 7:00 am, one of Mary's ol'fart customers roll in. My first comment, "What are you doing? Bringing me firewood?" He had a couple of dead pine logs. One was about 14" diameter and the other about 8". They were from a tree has great uncle had planted. The electric line clearing crew had to cut it. He wanted them sawn to make something for his niece's new house. He assures me there's never been anything nailed into it.
I've been seeing a lot of deer moving. Two big bucks in velvet crossed the drive I front of me. Last evening deer were running around in the cut hay field. I suspect the flies are bothering them.
Grass that has been lush green until this week is burning up.
Thought I would make you feel bad, our high today was 70 by Sunday we are supposed to hit 77. The heat is pretty bad. We have had a total of 78 minutes of temps over 80 so far this year actually since like Sep last year. Western Washington can be pretty mild most of the time.
Mary and I spent a few days in Portland during the "heat of the summer" – August as I remember. The temperatures were nice but it was so damp.
Thankfully, I will not saw until Monday and then only about three days. I've gotta get stuff ready to travel. Tomorrow is oil changing day for the RV.
Despite the lying media it's not been record breaking heat up here, but it's by no means cool or cold. It's still hovering around 80. And up until Wednesday night not much for rain. The ground around the yard under the trees was cracking open like the desert. But Wednesday night we got 8/10th's and yesterday 4/10's to ward off the drought. I had been putting some water on the garden by bucket.
Had some fresh carrots, beats, spinach a couple days ago as I needed to thin out the carrots so they could grow. So that meant the carrots needed water at the time because it was very dry.
Fresh carrots are nice........mmm Soon be shelling peas as they are podded now and the beans are in full bloom. Soon be picking peppers and the tiny tims are forming on the tomatoes. 8) Had so many tims go to waste last year the volunteer tomatoes where growing like weeds. :D

I've been working on the new house deck in the mornings and sawing a bit in the afternoons. The mill is under a big shade tree and usually get an afternoon breeze. Think I'll stop until temperatures drop a bit. I'm bout out of logs other than junk cedar anyhow.
I've been out sawing. The breeze is coming up just a little. If I'm directly under the fan, it's not too bad. Out in the sun... burn out quick. I'm working in slow motion. Not moving very fast and drinking a lot of water.
I moved my mill and edger to a customers' site and cut 12,000BF SYP last week. We worked under two big white oak trees that provided shade all day. The heat index was 105 to 110 every day. Three of us were drinking a case of bottled water and lots of Gatorade every day. We went to work at 6:00 AM and quit by 2:30PM. Finally this week we have have a few afternoon showers that helped lower the temp slightly. It has been totally miserable with high humidity and no wind every day. I promise I am not going to gripe about cold weather this winter!

It's been 100 degrees for the last two days here too, feels like 115. To hot to do much of

No matter how hot it gets, I'll never be as hot as the summer of '53 - according to my dad.
Dad was telling yesterday that back in that heat wave, they were the first in the family to get their house wired with electricity so they had a fan. My grandparents moved in so they could get in front of it. Dad said they moved their bed (my folk's not the grandparents) out in the yard because they still cooked on a wood cookstove.

Charleston was a cool 105 index this past wednesday, compared to the week before I complained about. I saw the news online later that week that said when i was there they hit a record heat index, of 124...
Here in WNC it's in the low 90s thanks goodness, as any hotter and I would be moving up north. I can put more clothes on but I cant take off any more without being arrested. :D

So far in OKC they officially have had 30 days of 100 degree + days. According to the news we may beat the 50 days of 100+ degree days in a single year. I am really tired of this heat and drought. Noticed some of the older oak trees are starting to die out.

Got 6/10" rain last night, makes 1.8" for the week. We needed it bad in places like home here, but other areas it's been raining a lot more. The ground here was drying and cracking open like desert. Needed the rain bad and I never thought that would be the case, because up to 3 week ago it rained every other day. But the heat and growing season sure sucks up the water. The woodlot had water everywhere 3 weeks ago and Sunday I found it to be bone dry, until this week that is. ;D
Hot enough here, water running off me and all I did was make bread and drink coffee this morning. It was 68 degrees here before daylight with 99% humidity.
We haven't had any meaningful rain in 45 days. The corn is waving white flags of surrender. Day after day of over 100 degree heat. I believe its just going to be the crop insurance now. Somehow the ears filled out, although smaller ears. Some is starting to be cut for silage, just to salvage something. I imagine aflatoxin will be a problem at the elevators this year.

We have gotten rain, so the grass has kicked into overtime growing. I'm going over to "Roundup" my deer plots today.
Thats dryland Norm. I think the irrigated will be pretty good. One plus for the corn is that it has been humid without much wind. Its not like I remember back around 1980 when even the irrigated couldn't pollinate. A lot of these guys barely turn the pivots off. Friend of mine with a feedlot is getting ready to put the dryland around the corners of his pivots into the pit. He puts up earlage. He thinks that will start in about 2 weeks. He wants that corn to be down to around 35-40% moisture.

Speaking of this ... Craigslist has had a ton of listings for horses, cattle and goats because people are just plum out of grass. With grains being as high as they are I think people are just in a bad spot as far as being able to provide for their animals. Sad really.
I wondered how it was doing in your area Kansas. We got some timely rains finally, the garden is suffering but the row crops look pretty good.

That's been happening around here for a few years. People have been turning horses loose on government ground or just abandoning them on trail rides, etc.
Here yesterday, we set a record of 102 degrees F. The heat Index was 121 degrees!!! OMG!!!!
I'm finishing up a big residential willow oak tree for firewood. I didn't start the afternoon shift until 6 pm, when the mercury had dipped to 99 degrees.

Been 88 degrees for a couple days. Looks like another storm coming with lightning, wind and rain. Power flickered a couple times. It's not strong winds yet, just gusty. 6:00 pm here now and it has darkened down. This kind of heat always brings thunderstorms from the west or northwest.
A second glance here and the temps dropped to 68 degrees in just a few minutes. ;D
We have had rain all afternoon and it's a nice 76° outside. Just a lazy afternoon. I even popped popcorn. :)

I checked a bit ago and it was 99.3 with 113 heat index. Since then some cloud cover has come up and it's cooled down to about 90. I see on radar some pop-up thunderstorms to the south of us.
Suns out again and 62 degrees now. Down around my kind of temperature. :)
I am trying to build furniture, and it is rough.

The time line made it look like I could get a half-day of sawing in before it got real hot. Made breakfast, went out by 6:00 and cleaned up the last project and loaded the deck with red oak logs. By the time I got the deck loaded I could hear thunder and spotted a lightning bolt to the south. I came in to see what was up. (All my help were still sleeping in.) A thunderstorm had popped up like a mushroom to the south and proceeded to build over us. We've had some light showers for the past hour and the storm just lingers over us. Once it passes, it may be cooler? Or will the sun come out and make the humidity unbearable? In any case, I've lost my momentum for the day.
I wish God would tell me that!

For some reason we have been getting daily rains and the temps are in the low 90's. I just hope that the rain doesn't prevent me from finishing that ERC saw job next week.
Outdoor digital thermometer was showing 106 degrees in the shade at 11:30 this morning, thought is was wrong and looked at a couple of the older ones and they were showing 107 and 108. I will be glad to see this high pressure that stuck on top of us moves out, the sooner the better. Right now the temps is showing 105 at 1:15.
I'm trying to hang tough but this heat is kicking my but! I got out early and worked until noon yesterday. I intended to go back out but just couldn't. I did have to go put some stuff up and, whaaah!, that sun!
This morning Mary and I got out early and worked until noon. By 10:00 I felt my legs wobble a couple of times. We were under roof, three fans blowing, cold water to drink and keeping up a slow pace. Every time I had to go out in the bright sun I felt like I had a headache.
I've been in the house under AC and fans for two hours now and my clothes are finally starting to dry out.
It's 98 actual and 102 heat index. I'd sure help to have some breeze. The wind speed is only 5mph. I don't think there was any air moving this morning.
Back when I was a kid and complain about the heat, dad was tell me to whip up a breeze.
It caught up with me yesterday, first it was a headache and then light headed. I came in and took a cold shower to get the heat out of me. By supper I was feeling better but today I'm staying out of the sun as much as possible. It's 93° with a heat index of 110° right now and supposed to be hotter tomorrow. I'm waiting for the sun to get further down before I head out to do anything.
eat two or three popsicles and it cools you down pretty quick. it is 100 degrees out side on the porch now, hot and dry.
It's all about hydration, just drinking water is not enough - Army training taught me that in high temps, if your not pissing clear once an hour you not doing enough...
Wear a camelbak (http://www.camelbak.com) and drink till you are going frequently, add a Gatorade or something like it every couple hours to replace the lost electrolytes (mostly sodium). It may seem excessive and can be a pain but well worth it and you'll feel better almost immediately...
I guarantee your production will go up...
By the time you have a headache or are light headed it's too late - you've already got heat exhaustion - next is heat stroke and that's not something you want to experience..

I cut until 3:00 pm today in 84 F heat, that's hot enough in itself, let alone 100 +. I was wet as if it rained all day. We also have a heavy due on everything around here in the early morning, so it might as well be raining. It's raining, when it ain't raining. :D
Cut close to two acres in plantation on field. Cutting out the doubles, fir and hardwoods. And snip a few too close to one another.
We have been getting to the field at day light to start grinding. Today it was 94 degrees at 9:00 and when we called it quits at 11:30 it was 105. Tomorrow we get 113 and that is actual temp with no heat index. Everything is crispy critter, trees grind into more powder then mulch.

One of my earliest childhood memories is watching dad come in from "plowin' corn" (cultivating) with a team of horses. He would take his sweat soaked chambray shirt off and hang it up and then wash up in a wash pan on a small table in the front yard. He'd put on a dry shirt to come eat dinner. I noticed the shirt he hung up was white around the seams and pockets from the salt.
I never saw dad at a table without shirt on. I never saw dad at a table with a hat on. And he raised me the same way.
If you came to grandmas dinner table with a cap on she removed it if you didn't. ;D

Have to admit I'm in the same boat as you all- got out on the house I'm building by 6, worked pretty good till about 10:30 and I'd put out so much sweat my shoes squished when I walked- couldn't take a step without water just pouring off me, so I gave up and took a shower. Did some work, ate lunch, played with grandkids and then ran errands with the eldest grandson with full intention of hitting the roofing again before supper. Just wasn't in me today, so I did paperwork, installed a new printer/scanner we needed for business (got a great deal on it plus $15 off coupon in the mail yesterday) and now it's 7 and still no energy. Guess I'll work on my real job for the rest of the night and hit it again after a good night's sleep...
Great sermon yesterday and it made me realize how valuable whatever time we are given on this earth. Made a resolution to use every minute as carefully and wisely as possible- even decided to give up the occasional swear word that pops out from dropping a sheet of OSB off the scaffolding after I'd just manhandled it up two levels (just one of today's profanity-inducing developments that I manfully resisted). I hadn't realized how I'd fallen back into the habit of venting my frustrations like we did in my youth, working as a gandy dancer on the local rail lines. Talk about hot and hard work! Thinking back now, I realize that what I'm doing today is just plain fun compared to that. Wish me luck in trying to be a good example to the grandkids... :)

I'm not a consumer of Gatorade and other sports drinks. I drink a lot of water. I also drink a lot of raw, skimmed milk. I think they've found that milk is a good energy drink.

Guess I struck it just right in NB this past weekend. Went up to Sackville on Friday to bring a car up for a friend, (got there in the evening nice and cool) Then on Saturday we went to Moncton to catch the U2 concert it never got over 20° C it had been 30° the week before and the rain stopped just in time for the show, then cought the St. John boat to Digby on Sunday where it was a nice 23°.
Got to like this part of the world this time of the year. :)

What a bunch of whimps! We made it till 4 pm when Matt just about hit the dirt so we called it a day. Just don't seem to make young men like they used to. This was to be the coolest day all week.
I woke up in the Emergency Room once in this kind of weather with the girls poking needles in me, not near as much fun as it sounds like. Be careful the heat.
Aaron called me today and said it will be 113 tomorrow in Stillwater Ok. They grind mulch until about 10 or 11 and they are done. Leaves are dropping like it is fall he said.
Showers here for most of the rest of the week, got 2/10" last night in thunder showers. 62F here this morning.
I learned the hard way what heat exhaustion is.
My downfall Sunday was being in the sun too much. I went back out yesterday after 3PM to get something done but said the heck with it I'll tackle it today. Decent breeze out which to me makes all the difference. I read that July will go down as the hottest month in Iowa since 1955.
It takes a long time to recover from even a mild case of heat exhaustion. In my case, for the rest of the summer my heat tolerant level was very low. Keep hydrated. Those "frog togg" towels work well.
I just checked - it's 107 actual, 114 heat index. ::)
We sawed until noon and then I delivered a load of beams. Got home about 2:00. Mary had to make her run to town to get more "stuff".. I'd take my boots off but sure as I do, someone will show up.
Actual temp here was 111 in the shade today When I get home at 5:00 from my full time job I pretty much stay in the house. I planted some new trees earlier this spring, I have been wanting to do this for several years. Just my luck I plant them when Oklahoma has had the hottest summer in history along with a drought. I have to water them about every other day.

Aaron and his wife and I got to play for a week in Colorado inthe mountains where it was cooler. His playing is over for a while so he won't be coming this year. He is going to Rotochopper's plant in MN for a few days to check out some new grinders. Is that play or work? They are putting him up for a few days.
I plan to leave early Fri morning. Will need a small tent spot if that is ok.
Supposed to hit 97 actual here today and tomorrow and with our humidity, even early morning is a bear. Oh, well, this too shall pass... ;)

We were out at 6:00 and got what we felt had to be done done. I asked Mary if she was ready to start the next project. I got "that look" and she said, "You can if you want to. I'm done.". I did some cleanup work and as I was coming in, the breeze (something new!) was coming from the north. I'm sure I'm not done for the day but I'll take a break.
It was 114 in shade (actual temp not heat index) in the River Valley around Ft Smith yesterday. I don't think it has ever been so miserable. Today is more of the same. We may reach 115 today. The low last night was 90. Unreal.
Hit 110 today and was 104 at auction time. Matt made it to 4 pm and we knocked it off. Going to start at 7am when it is only 90 or so.
I think heat is tougher than cold. What do you do when there is nothing more to take off? :D
When I get my operation moved out to the property I'm buying I think I'm gonna do a large swamp cooler setup to help kill the heat next to the mill. It just takes the energy right out of me. I'll do winter any day over hot.
I don't know the proper name but those "misters" like you see in Arizona and other warm places are pretty effective at cooling off an outdoor area.

I think they work well in places with 4% humidity. But here where we live we jump for joy if it gets below 80%. I'd think a mister would just add another layer of misery here.
Well, it reached 117 yesterday and looks to repeat it today. They also upgraded us to "Extreme Drought". I went outside last night at 10pm and it was still 101. We have fires all around us right now, many of which have been burning for days. Just when they think they have it under control, it takes off again. I wouldn't dare start anything right now for fear of starting another one.
I am beginning to think fall will never get here.
Folks should be careful to even consider building any yard fires and such because if it's like up here, even with a fire permit, you have to observe fire weather warnings. If you start a major forest fire that grows out of control it could mean you forfeit some serious quid when they find you out.

We have been under a burn ban for well over a month now. Some kids decided to shoot some fireworks off last week and it started a forest fire. It's been burning ever since. Hundreds of acres burned including a $300k house and threatening more. Other fires have been started by brush hogging and electrical lines coming into contact.
we(anita, the boys, and i) got in from our vacation this morning about 4 am. it was raining a little. dad said we got almost 2'' of rain on monday and it has rained off and on all day here. we needed it.
many of our oak trees are turning brown and dropping their leaves. pastures seem to have greened up already. twc says it is 73degrees now.
we visited some west coast beaches(cayoucas, morra rock and pismo beach) and it was almost cold there. average high temp at the beach was 64. hit a few other sights too, like the grand canyon and the huge trees. i will try to post some pics on my thread'' i would rather be sawing but instead i have to...'' later today.

64 here today with rain off and on, not much to it. This morning before the rain the water was running off of me just walking perimeter of the woods and tying flagging tape. High humidity I guess. Shirt was wet like it just came out of the wash machine. Didn't smell as nice though, I can guarantee it. ;)

I may just take off next week and work on the Cabin Addition, and start back sawing the last week of August.

We had a cold front come through a couple of days ago, high yesterday was 78°F and supposed to be 80's for the next couple of days.
would you put some of those lower 80,s in a box and send them down here, it,s 15 min. after 9 and it,s already 92 in southwest la.
Well, it wasn't real hot around here today, enough to wet your shirt in a few minutes working out in the sun.
I wanted some shade but didn't want to move everything.
So I created a new shade holder for my work area.

we did the same thing for our wood splitter. we used a tractor umberella and rounds of firewood stacked up and the top one was hollow to hold the umberella post. pc

Looks like the forcast for Oklahoma is right around 100 again this week. We had a few nice days last week where it actually felt decent outside. I wish fall would hurry up and get here.
Every time I looked at my thermometer yesterday it was between 101 and 107 depending on where I was at. It's hotter in the city with all that concrete. Crazy thing is, I think I might be getting acclimated to it. You know it's been hot when 95 feels like a cool front. Looks like fall here. All the grass is brown and dead. The oak tree leaves have all turned brown and are flying through the air littering yards and driveways. It's messing with my mind. Looks like the beginning of bow season but feels like July.
Well, here in the Big Thicket, we have been under extreme danger and complete burn ban (not even a charcoal cooker) for several months. Many trees are dead, many more are dying daily. I have seen many of the trees go from green to completely brown in 4-5 days. We are really hitting critical mass, and if it doesn't rain, significantly, very soon, we may lose more than we have left. The weather man said 104-107 for us today. I had 111 at my office and I could see the temperature on the Regions tower said 109. Got a brief heavy shower last night and it was nice. I haven't felt cool air in far too long.

It was wet enough from the dew for my boots to get wet inside, like walking on trout. ;)

I haven't thought about this in a long time but when I was young, I used to put the fish I'd catch down in my waders. You only have so much room for stuff. Wasn't always convenient to have to deal with a stringer, especially if you were catching them left and right. Good times ....some of the best days of my life were spent on the river, in waders, with a fly rod in my hand.
It was 109 downtown today and 92 at 7:30 when I left the office. It was nice. I actually had to turn my a/c down from maximum.
It was hot, yeah, on the JD today bushhogging. :o
Whewww .... bushogging? I need to get out and do mine but even with the a/c in my tractor that cab heats up and the a/c can't keep up. On the plus side, it's been so hot that the vegetation isn't growing as fast.
Leaves are falling off some of the birch, ironwood and poplar around here. Some of the butternut are bare to with a set bud. ::)
i need to do a little mowing too, however, i cant get motivated. i probably only lack 200 acres or so and i use a 15 ft mower but its sure hot out there in the middle of the day. i use mornings and evenings to saw, so i guess it will wait till late in september. pc

I was starting to enjoy the more moderate weather. At least it was survivable and I could go back out in the evenings and do a little something. But it looks like the heat is back.
Today there is a nice breeze so it's not too bad in the shade. Tomorrow the heat index is expected to be 115. :-\
We could have started another run but decided we needed to get some other stuff done. Mary's been in town all morning making her rounds. I've been out storing logs, bush hoggin' and cutting brush and hang-out limbs.
Cool and dry here today, in the upper 60's. Tomorrow is suppose to warm up to the 80's again.
SD, you still on fire ban up there? Se are just getting to fire danger conditions now here in the PNW. Up till now it has been cool and moist. It was'nt till last week or so we finally got above 90 for the year. If the trees are already setting up for winter, maybe you will get some moisture soon :)
No fire ban here, but birch and balsam poplar will often drop a lot of leaves in August. Even in the woods where I'm at working the woods is full of water, but birch leaves are dropping. It's not like fall, but I see leaves on the ground, mostly the insect damaged ones. Two of 3 more weeks will be fire weather here, in the stove type fire. ;)
Today was my first day back on the sawmill. I don't know how far into the high 90's it got, but the weather guy said 96° this morning. Anyway, the umbrella worked all day. Gabby was tailing, so he took many water breaks.
The weather guy said tonight that we're headed for a record. We've already had 58 days over 100 degrees in Louisiana. He didn't say what the record was though. I had 107 at the office today.
That is not a record I would like to break. It been real bad here, but not that bad.
Oklahoma broke another record today with a high in OKC of 108 degrees. :-\ Sure wish we could break some record lows instead of record highs.
I feel for you guys. 'Course it's been in the very high 90's here. That is hot enough for me. :-\
We had a bad storm blow through right after lunch today. Bad straight line winds. Temp dropped to 74 degrees. Got a nice long heavy rain. Made a mess of everything but it feels so nice outside. Tonight people were out sitting on their porches again.

It's 53° here this morning after the cold front moved past us. Sure wish it had come through with some rain though.

Heat finally broke here today. Cool front came in last night. Back to the 80's for highs for a few days.
Combines have started on the dryland corn. You see the combines running; you rarely see a grain truck. Guess I am going to find out how the crop insurance process works now.

I don't think it's going to linger this year. We're dropping leaves like rocks up here. My place is covered in oak leaves. Thought about you today. There were black patches all down the medians along 20 and 220 where lightning has struck during the storm and lit them on fire. Last fall was nice and gradual. We had the most color I've seen in 10 years of living down here last fall. Looks like October right now. Feels like July. ;)
..... I'll say this, if you can find a water hole this fall duck hunting will probably be good on it down here. When there's too much water the ducks tend to scatter ....too many options for them. Being dry like this, I'm seeing bayous dried right up, ponds down to nothing. I've been pumping 80,000 gallons a day into my pond for months and it's just maintaining. It's full though. 30 feet deep on the deep end. :)

So that's why our water table has dropped so much up here- it's all getting siphoned off in LA! :) My pond is way down and I can't afford to "feed" it anything. Lilly pads are taking over and not enough time to do anything about it. Oh, well, let's hope for a long, cool clear fall.
Temp here is supposed to hit 99 today- got a crew coming to start siding and they normally finish at 12 on Friday but I may let them go at 11 since I'll probably be worn out by then. I'll pay them for the extra hour though- "heat bonus" is what it amounts to, as it's been so hot and humid all week and they've stuck it out for me.

Yep, I stocked it about 4 or 5 years ago with Bluegills (Brim for you the Southerners ;) ), sunfish, and Florida Largemouth Bass. They're doing really well. The panfish are as big as my hand now and the bass are 4-5 lbs. Having it deep like that creates a thermocline. If I'm floating vertically in the deep end, the top 5 feet or so is super warm because of the hot temps we have, but from my feet on down ...it's cold,cold, cold. That lets those fish get out of that hot water in the heat of the day if they need to.

Yep, not sure how much I could see down there though. When I've tried to reach the bottom I can't. My body wants to float. I'd have to strap a weight belt on to get down the full 30' feet. I stopped swimming in there though. I saw a few gators over the hill in our bayou. After that it made me think twice about getting in the pond. It's all in my head I'm sure. I haven't seen the drag marks gators make with there tails leading to the pond or anything. I'm really surprised the otters on my bayou haven't found the pond. Thank goodness. They'd be in heaven with all those fish.

We pump water into our pond too. Really helps out keeping the water fresh so we don't get fish kills in the summer or winter.

A little 2-4-D will take care of the lily pad problem and not harm your fish. With that bum hand, you could work a sprayer. If you go that route, make sure you add a bonding agent to the mix.
Thanks, Radar- I happen to have some of both on hand (joke) and was planning on using all my enforced free time to do farm and pond maintenance which I've been neglecting for the last few months. It occurred to me the other day when thinking about how to set up a document for the kids on inheriting the land, how to divide it and what restrictions I'd put on it, that you don't own land, it owns you. Do I want to saddle my kids with that? I'd planned on leaving it up to them on how to divide some of it and what they could sell and what they must keep, but it's hard to decide. My biggest concern is the economy- my kids and certainly my grandkids will not have defined retirement programs like I had from the state. Having a place they could go in an emergency or when getting older (as we all do eventually) would be a good thing. Hate to see one of them sell off their share and then realize many years later that they wish they hadn't. Oh, well, thoughts for the future... ???

Lj, I would be very hesitant about adding restrictions concerning land use/sale beyond your lifetime. Some of your lifetime decisions may be unpopular after your death. That is why you must make them now regarding who gets what. What they will do afterwards is their decision.
I can't imagine the heat you guys have day after day down there. I was fitting some new double walled stove pipe in the basement yesterday and that isn't much physical exertion. It was 78 degrees outside and probably 68 in the basement, none-the-less the water was running off me like a sprinkler system. ::)
Your not that old yet, but if I was leaving land to heirs I would be dividing it now while I'm alive and not let family fight and squabble over who gets what, how much or where. You can still hold onto the land until your death if you wish, but will out the parcels. There was a time here that the government would just take it away if you ended up in the senior citizens home to pay the bills. You had to have it turned over in the other family members' names several years before you went to the home, like 5 years or something. Yet, a poor man with nothing got a free ride. That being said, I've seen land that dear old dad managed and looked after doing the right things and as soon as the heirs got it it was liquidated, as it's a lot easier to divide cash than land. They don't have to pay for a survey and the logger does the rest, sometimes even pays for a survey.
Some put a time restriction on selling, an example would be that land cannot be sold for 5 years after getting it, or some thing like that. It gives time for the dust to settle and to think about what they want to do with the land.

I was HOT today when I got to the tree farm and that $100 flat repair was flat. I did work up quite a sweat changing oils, fluids, and filters though.
On Saturday it was a record 106 in the shade, today the temp was a record 108 in the shade again according to the news, Altus OK had 111. Sure has been tough trying to keep trees alive I planted in the spring throughout the field. I was digging some 3' holes in the clay today with the backhoe, the clay was dry three feet down when I brought it out it just crumbled. The ponds are drying up two have already went dry, and the other two are working on in. Luckily the larger pond is about 18' deep. Sure wish we could get about a week or two of slow rain and cooler weather. The news is showing 105 on Monday and Tuesday and 104 on Wednesday :-\.
Finally turned into summer here, 27C at 5:30 which is about 80.6F. Kinda hard to get enthusiastic about mowing or other such nonsense. Not complaining though, had a good afternoon at the beach with the dogs.

60 here and overcast. Had a couple cord of firewood to go in, so it rained a 1/10" on me of course. But it went into the basement just the same. When I was done, the rain stopped. ::) ::)
I thought I fixed a leek in the shop roof, but I figured how it's getting in now. There is an overlap of the roofing I have some gunk on the seem further down slope which is causing water damming and the water goes across the ribs onto the tar paper and travels down to the chimney under the roofing to the end of the tar paper and drips inside down the flu. I suspected it before, but the ladder can't reach quite far enough, need 6 more feet. Pain in the A$$ ::)
Just when I was getting accustomed to the 80's the temperature went back up into the 90's. :-\ It was "sweat city" again today. smiley_sweat_drop I'll start a saw job tomorrow. I hope that it will be in the shade. smiley_sun
Figured it must still be toasty in the south, it's been in the 70's up here this week. Big cool down coming for the end of the week though. Big old high is going to throw some nippy frost in low areas.
The weathergoof says that we will definately have a killing frost tonight. Says that it is supposed to go down to about 24 or 25 F. I guess it's time as we have had a pretty good one. Usually frosted up by the full moon in August, but not this year. ::)
I usually don't get any frost until the end of September, but it can be up at the woodlot much earlier if it's down in the upper 30's at the house. Sometimes I don't see frost until a little later, but it's not the norm. With a couple brooks near by up at the woodlot it cools the air down more.

The first of the frosts was down to 23.8. 8) This means a whole lot less skeeters and bugs to deal with now and also that I should not melt away while sawing. :D Love the fall and winter so glad it's here..... smiley_thumbsup

For some reason, today seemed unbearably hot. I was sawing Black Willow, Poplar, and SYP, not that it made any difference, and thankfully I did have my umbrella.
The customer finally called two of his Brothers. One burned out quickly and the other was in poor condition when we finished the job. Today was the most miserable day that I have spent sawing this Summer.
We went through that kind of weather all summer it's like, this last 5 days or so has given us a nice cool down, today was the hottest in the low nineties. Suppose to have a good chance for rain tonight and then cooler for the rest of the week, hope it makes it your way.
It was mid 80's here today, I think. Didn't feel too bad.
It has been hot and dry for weeks here. Some areas of the southern interior of BC are supposed to hit 37C (106F) this week. No big fires yet but wouldn't take much to set one off especially with all the beetle kill.
Is it humid down there in Mississippi? This summer has been very uncomfortable here on the coast of Virginia. I wish I could move west to the mountians, Maybe Roanoke, or Winchester.

Yep, no doubt about it, when I started cutting at the end of 04' the flooring mill foreman, who we go to church with said, "get ready, it's always hot, or always cold in the sawmill industry" and I can testify, he is correct. I built my shed to block the winter wind in Feb, and did not think about the toaster oven effect during the summer months, it is warm, Still love it, early mornings and thank God for lights in the evening. What blessing to have fun while making a living.
In Maine, they told us that a (production) sawmill was the hottest place in the summer, and the coldest place to work in the winter.
We finally got our break this afternoon. It is 72° and raining now. :)

For the sawyer of today, he sits in a climate controlled booth with computer assist and TV monitors. A lot of the times his hands are not even at any controls. There is a hardwood mill about 50 miles from here that shuts down in winter about Christmas. I don't think those fellas were cold much because every piece of that heavy hardwood was stacked and stickered all day long. All the figured maple was sorted for eye and curl. This was the cream of the sawmill, as most of the wood was very cheap for the mill coming off public land. Without a license on crown, they would never have enough supply to keep the mill running. Wood from private woodlots was just a trickle because they were not paying much more than pulp price for logs. I think they sawed mostly ties, but also whatever Select or better they could get out of it. I'm pretty sure some of the wood is bought and kilned by the local broker. When you talk to some of the guys around the lumber yard, they can't tell you much because they are not on that end of it. They most often don't even know the local mills.
96° today and no shade whatever for my two off bearers. My umbrella and "pith helmet" saved me, but by the late afternoon, those two guys were hurting. I saw that one was flushed and I quickly got him to the water cask for a head wetting. He drank water and later a 12 oz Gatorade which immediately came back up. More water and he seemed OK. By then the other was up-chucking. We will have to quit sooner tomorrow.
They need to pace themselves. Heat exhaustion (or worse) is no joke. It was 93 here at The Beach today, and I drank four 32 ounce Gatorades, two 16 ounce glasses of sweet tea, and at least half a gallon of water.
Hot and Humid here today 85° and I don't know what the humidity was!
I was out on a sawjob early this morning and at lunch time I went home (ate lunch in the truck) and got my operators seat and umbrella, so after that, I was good!
The heat didn't seem to bother the two "adult" off-bearers much, but my 5-gallon water jug only had about a gallon in it when I got home at the end of the day! Which is great!
I really push the water when I'm on a saw-job!

One of my best heat recoveries was after a day of offshore fishing on a hot day I got home and after cleaning fish and the boat I was half past dead!
I ate a large slice of cold watermelon with salt and it turned me around to feeling great!
You might try packing some iced fresh fruit like water/cantaloupe/honey dew/melon to bring out when it gets rough.

I would not want to be off bearing in them temps. I should say I could not do it. The heat bothers me. And that is here in Maine. ::) I work out in the sun,a field at times,but it's at a slow pace. Lots of breaks,lots of fluid.
Down South we have been under a series of VERY high humidity. In a few weeks as we become acclimated to the higher heat we will appreciate it only being 92 deg etc.
As for me I am having a particularly difficult time this year getting used to this stuff. Monday I worked too hard and got too hot, yesterday I restricted myself, but today it will be out in the heat again.
Like MM says, out in a parking lot offers little shade.

We drove by the bank building in town,92°. I might of had 82,with the wind blowing.
Yesterday it was 92°F with very high humidity. I played host to a group of middle and high school teachers taking part in the Natural Resources Teacher Institute put on through PLT. Fortunately there was a steady breeze and we stayed in the shade, moving slow as we toured the woods.
Repeat of temp and humidity today with much less breeze. I will be working in the saw barn addition, laying decking on the loft. It will be interesting to see how much I get done and how long I last. Definitely will be drinking a lot of water.
I know it is getting hot when the guys get out the pedestal fans. Nice breeze in the mill. When I built it in 92, I had 6" of insulation put over the tin in the ceiling. This makes a huge difference in the mill. Usually a breeze flowing through the mill too. I am usually the yard guy. No shade there. I take to the house and drink plenty. Don't move too fast either. Have gotten hot a few times, but never puky hot. I like heat better than real cold.
Big break in the heat today. Coolest day in a month. 98° or so they say. ;D 8) 8) 8) :snowball:

My two off bearers started drinking fluids early today and never let the heat get ahead of them like they did yesterday. We knocked off at 3:00 though and will be back sawing tomorrow.
The heat isn't what usually bothers people, it's the humidity.

Monday there are two 36" Red Oak logs waiting.
After work, I got up to the build site about 6pm. Came back about 9pm. I was soaked head to toe. Yeah, it's hot.
I am about as ready for the heat as I can get. Hooked this up yesterday, it blows right down the mill, also pushes the sawdust away from the sawyer. Locally, we call them swamp coolers, they don't work very well when the humidity gets real high, might work better if I had a source of cold water to run through it.

We have one of thoes water coolers at work . When it's really hot I'll put a bunch of ice in the bottom of it , feels like an a/c then.

It was 38 degrees this morning at the cabin and the wind beat us up all day but it was good chainsaw weather. The sun came out this evening. I had a Bonnet on my head all day to keep from freezing the sweat under my helmet.
Mooseherder,them Flatlanders will think the whole state of Maine was that cold. Just 58 here now. It was a cool day. But above 60 all day.

Left Brandon this morning skiff of snow on the tarped load and trailer deck, and out in the fields. by the manitoba and sask border +8 got home Regina around 12 +20 sorta shake and bake weather. Next week in the mid 20s C. last Tuesday and Wed got 2" of rain.

Yesterday started at 69F and hit 89F. I get about 4 hours work in till it is to hot for me. Cool again this morning with rain near by and I need to cut the grass. :(

Yep, so far two rain showers and that only made it hotter. Called it quits around 10:30 this morning. Not a breeze blowing today. Hit the 93F and we still haven't got to summer. :(

Yesterday we milled a Oak log, started at 8am and it was 80 degs. By 12:30 it was 91 and I quit for the day. To day it
was 104 buy 3pm, don't think I will be doing any millings as its to be in the upper 90's all next week.

9 am it was 88F with a dew point at 80. 10 am, T storms moved in and the temp dropped to 70F ;D Still coming down in buckets. I will take it.
I've been tied up on a couple of thinning projects on the mountain for a while now. But while waiting on parts for my Bobcat to come in, I decided to go down and fill a couple of little orders.
I didn't get there until noon because...well, I won't get into that.
First thing I found is that all the fuel lines on my B-20 were rotten and sucking air. I robbed the lines off my old mill, and got it started finally.
Long story short. I did get the 2 orders filled. How hot was it? I figure it was about 97 in the shade, but since there is no shade there the thermometer read 102.
I'm glad my parts came in. It was 77 on the mountain today. ;D
Just a reminder, summer begins next week. I don't think we have any danger of frost damage for at least a couple of weeks ;D ;D.

Holy Molly, way to hot today. :o 6 am started at 79F. By 2 pm, it hit 97F with a heat index of 107F. When one brush paints something with varnish and it dries in less the 20 minutes in the shade, it's a hot one. :o Heck, I tried to do some work in the camp, but way to hot there this morning. When thru three shirts, underwear and pants before calling it a day. ;D
I'm quite content sitting in an office offshore reading this and not experiencing it first hand....however, all good things must end. Drink water, change socks....go inside and cool off!!!

18% humidity? Never, ever gets below 45% here and that is mid winter.

The front that slid through last night cooled things off a bit here. I puttered around this AM and washed the 5th wheel before slipping into my seat and pulling the lever. Nope it was not the sawmill seat the lever was not engaging the clutch. ;D I am idling now. ;)
We worked friday and saturday in our tree business with the index around 106 and yes friends i did have a cold beer when i got home.be safe and well hydrated.
Another hot one today. 6am started at 82F. :o Soaking wet from head to toes by 7am and I called it a day. More the same tomorrow. :(
I sprayed deer food plots, fixed the start switch in a golfcar, and replaced the glowplug and starter switches in the Ford tractor. 95° is HOT!
It was 97 according to the bank clock in Seneca, MO at 6 this evening. I could foresee it and that's why I left the mill at 12:30 today. H.I. of 116 today.

Was 96 yesterday, with horrible NE humidity...full portable day yesterday, first day also with new pt helper...we both made it home alive, and beat...today, early 90's, higher humidity...half a day portable, the rest screwing around at the barn, planning on sawing at home there tomorrow, at least out of the sun and potential thunderstorms...sawing a a couple small orders, then for inventory if I get that far... will be solo...

That and a ice chest with water and ice, a bilge pump, some tubing. Mount the tubing around the fan. Make a bunch of very small holes. Have pump in ice chest, turn on. :D

Yesterday 7/9 it was about 75 degrees and 63 at Lake Tahoe. It feels like fall. Headed out todday for a 10 day raft trip on the Klamath River in northern California.
2-4-D seemed to work just fine on vegetation and our GIs in the heat in Nam.

What has been good for me is that it has been too hot for several customers and they postponed. Actually two this week.
Milled for over 9 hours today. Was a bit concerned not knowing the conditions on site, and having had a look at the forecast. Luckily we worked in the shade of a tall section of old growth all day. Still though, probably 90+ degrees and 150% humidity. Finished up and took a "shower" under the clients raised up pump handle type spigot from the waist up. Autumn can't get here soon enough...

Went out at 7 this morning to meet a tree guy who brought me a couple of logs. Unloaded him and then unloaded my trailer - 2 bur oak logs that total over 500 bf Doyle. Cleaned up the ends and end-coated (oak checks quickly in this weather). Started for the house and a client called to drop off 3 walnuts he wants to mill when it cools down. Heat index currently 117 - I'm staying inside.
The high at the saguaro hill last Friday was 113. Too bad we were in the greenhouses for part of it where it was in the pleasant 120's. :( :snowball: :snowball: :snowball:
If I got to be hot doing something, I rather it be running the mill. Nancy tells me every now and then that a knotty pine board is not worth having a heat stroke. As somebody on FF said, you got to learn to pace yourself and when to pull the plug.

This heat wave has been unreal. Heat index of 110F the last few days. :o So, no sawing and took on washing the house. At lease one can hose down if one gets to hot. ;D
I have two electrical services one for my house (125 amp) and one for the 28x40 hybrid (Post and beam 1st floor and conventional home built trusses for the second floor) barn (200 amp). The bottom floor of the barn has 10 inches of insulation in the ceiling and over 5 in the walls. It is a workshop and my wife's studio. We only run the barn air conditioner when it is really hot and only run a small portable one in the bedroom on really hot nights. My wife spends a lot of time in the barn in July because she does a 9 day show at Lake Sunapee (NH) the first full week of August, but normally the air does not have to be run a lot. I get a combined bill for the two services and it normally runs between 140 and 190 a month. My bill for July came in today $315.17!!!
Last month power was under $150 for full electric house for 2600SFL. The AC has been blasting and set at 73F in the day and 70F at night. ;D Winter months is when my bill goes up unless I burn the fireplace.
We are still in Michigan where it is cool, but my informant says that it is HOT in Mississippi because well.....it is still in Mississippi. smiley_sweat_drop smiley_sun

I got out rode up to the top of the hill then carried a 50 lb bag of corn to my feeder and stocked it and put in new battery. Bow season starts next month a youth hunt mid October when the granddaughters can come harvest an antlerless deer.
Then hooked up my 3'X4' cart to the ATV and cut, loaded and stacked 2 loads for an ash top I cut down yesterday. Got way too hot and had to come in and take a cool shower, drink several large glasses of Koolaid for the sugar then had lunch.
It is way too hot and I am way too old to be working that hard in direct sunlight in this kind of heat. I will have to schedule my work for early morning and late afternoon.

Back home now and the first thing I did was walk back to my mill. The wife hot on my tail like a flea on a hound dog. :D First thing she said, " don't even think about it". :D
Maybe by the weekend. I have 6 trees that I have to fell so I can get the power line ran to the camp. Really wanted to keep them, but the power company has to have a 30' clearance to pass. :(

Yep, it's what is keeping me alive. Really. I been fighting heart failure going on 6 years. All due to a viro infection. >:( 3+ years ago, two doctors told me and my wife I had less the 6 months. Talked to my BIL in FL and was only 93 there.
Went to my friends woodlot this AM got in the woods at 8:45 marked 10mbf of Hemlock and got out at 10 drenched with sweat.
Was only 84 then got to 89 as i type this.
95 degrees. Hot , humid, and nasty. Going to get worser this week.
9+" of rain with a forecast of 6"-8" more tonight and more thru next week. :o There are a lot of people getting flooded all along south central Louisiana clean across the state right now. :(

They now reporting some areas had as much as 22" of rain not more then 15 air miles from me. :o
This storm, a low pressure front center had only moved about 70 miles all day. It's getting all it's energy from The Gulf Of Mexico which the waters are very hot at this time of the year. :( It is starting to break down some, but they expect it to start firing off again around 1 in the morning. :o

Interstate 55 was closed due to high water 50 miles South of us. The town of Osyka was completely isolated.
Looking at radar its looks like a hurricane sitting on top of y'all.

Sawed from 7:00-5:00 yesterday it was 96 degrees at 2:30 and 98 at 4:00. Took a chair with me and sat down 5-10 minutes an hour for the last part of the day.
Customer wasn't there left me a list with the off bearer, "pine 1x10, Long". "2x6 and 2x4, can be shorter". "Oak 2". It was OK I've sawn for him dozens of times. He leaves me a blank check to fill in.
Hour drive home with the AC full blast on me. Still recovering this morning.
Well, it is still raining here. :o Went for a little drive yesterday and passed in front of Cypressman's place(Member here). It looks like his house took on water along with his lumber yard.
They still are pulling a lot of people out that are flooded. Water has back up everywhere with no place to go. :o Bayous will set all time high records in the area. I'm talking well over 4' from pass high records. :o
The TV is showing Interstate 55 washed out 50 miles South of us. :o
MM, they are launching boats off I-12 to get people out.
Just a heads up. This flooding down here is still going on. There are Emergency workers in Louisiana have rescued more than 20,000 stranded residents -- and, at last count, at least 500 pets -- from submerged homes and cars in the historic floods. At least three people have died. Thousands of homes flooded. Dang near the amount of Katrina. :o I don't know if this news is getting out to the rest on the country, Big news channels have not been playing here. The local news channels have been on 24/7, trying to pass on info. :o Really is a sad thing for me to see this, Hurricane Betsy and Katrina flooding in my life time. :(
Yup, I believe that this flooding will probably affect more people than Hurricane Katrina. The sad thing is that it is being largely ignored by the national media. It will get worse before it starts to get better. The misery will continue for weeks and then the recovery will begin. So many families have lost all that they have. The need for the basic necessities is great.

You are right no news about it in OR, must have been 4 murders on 10PM news. Sorry to hear it, flooding is hard to fight. Our big flood was in 96', certain areas where roads and RR got washed out were abandoned and never repaired.
The weather is different. The alders are starting to loose some leaves, this is about a month early. I think it is low moisture in the soil, we had winter rains but below normal and last summer was exceptionally dry.

The media is spread pretty thin: the flood, the fire, the upcoming elections, zeka, Milwaukee, terrorism, etc. And they try so hard to make all this entertaining. We need to pray for all those who are miserable and have lost their homes and possessions in the flooding and western fires. I Pray that the organizations like the Red Cross and Baptist Disaster Relief can offer some help to these people.

This is a weather phenomenon that has never happened before, and without understanding the terrain of South Louisiana it is hard for others to understand what happened and is still happening.
A topical depression settled over the area and just did not move. Over 20" of rain was dumped in this low lying area. The flood could not have been predicted nor prevented. There is nowhere for the water to go. Interstate highways are flooded and washed out in several places. There were people trapped on the interstate when they came to flooded areas. They turned around only to fine that the highway had flooded behind them.
Has anyone got word from fishfighter or others from that area. I know that fishfighter
is on west side of the river. My iPhone Google map shows all the roads that are closed
and it looks like you can't get in or out of Baton Rouge.

The north end of the state is pretty much high and dry. Local disaster relief (Rolling Hills Ministries) is gearing up with multiple clean-up crews, portable showers and laundry and a large portable kitchen, all maned by volunteers. We got hit with similar rains a couple of months ago, but with hilly terrain, the flooding wasn't nearly as bad the area around Baton Rouge is encountering.
I checked the Amite river gage at Denham Springs and it was down 4.88 ft. in the last

The problem is that there are other rivers that are backing up. Some places down a lot of rivers are starting to flood. This problem is still growing. :o

Thanks, I'm good. Was a very close call. Cell phones are very spotty in use. For 4 days, they were useless. All service was out along with land lines.
They just open I12, but I10 is still closed. Very hard to get into or out the city right now.

I know the sort of weather pattern MM is talking about, and I can only imagine what that would do over a large flat area.
Locally we get a bit of rain, but the terrain generally means steep fast flowing rivers to drain the water away. Of course then you get slips / washouts and tough luck for anyone silly enough to live close to one of the larger rivers.
Another update on this flooding.
More homes are flooding out due to back water flow further south of Baton Rouge. I had to go to New Orleans yesterday. A drive that normal drive time is a bit over two hours. Due to the flooding and the state installing dams along low spots of the interstate, that drive took over 3 hours. Very stressful day. :(
People in the Baton Rouge area are now getting back to their homes. Unreal seeing piles of house goods rip out of peoples homes at the roadside. If anybody ever saw a flood zone, you know what I'm talking about. Sad to see a life time of what a family has built, lost over night. :(

Grocery stores, etc. here are being depleted of many items that are being sent South for flood victims. Churches and other organizations are really putting forth an effort to help.
It finally made the news here as a top story. That water must be a witches brew of various kinds of chemicals, oils, mud. I can't imagine how one would clean up. Add in the heat -ow.
Yeah, it's hot, but what's worse is the humidity level in a flooded house will be nearly 100 percent. Makes any kind of physical activity rather unpleasant.

There is a lot of help coming in. Problem is, it's such a large area. Half of it is non city/ country folks.
Mold has started growing in many homes. Only takes a few days for that. Biggest thing is to get everything that is wet, out the house ASAP. There are treatments, but even that takes a long time which puts off rebuilding. It's a catch 22 there.
Both of my kids have been helping out and doing what they can. Just wished I could get out there, but I can't. Had asked my doctor yesterday and that is a big no no. :( I have been driving over the area, dropping bottle water to were ever it is needed. A lot of places have a" boil water order". Problem is, you can't do that in houses that had been flooded.
Just what a mess, but people that had been flooded got out and had and still helping others.
Death toll is at 13. They still going home to home and checking. That is going to take a few more days.
I have decided that it is not the heat. It's the humidity humiliation that really bothers me!! ;D
MM, it was sure a hot one yesterday here. 105 heat index yesterday till we got rain.
It was one of those days that started falling apart from the start, but got better after spending $4500. DanG riding lawnmower died. Was trying to make the summer with it, but that didn't happen. :( Bought one of those "Bad Boy" zero turns. Why I didn't buy one years ago. Cut my mowing less then half the time. :o

Mother nature gave us a head fake up here last week. Seemed like the heat was breaking, dropped from mid 90's to upper 80's. Calls for milling started pouring in... Back in the lower 90's now. ::) Guess it'll be a while longer til things pick up.
Milled a small job today starting at 3pm, hottest part of the day. Just me and the client's son, a recently "retired" Marine. He mentioned that they drank so much water while in the service that he feels weird not drinking plenty of water all the time. Good advice!
Sweat City yesterday and I was making farm repairs, not sawing. Next week we have sawing scheduled and we will be sawing our shade. ::)

I have two more orders to get out....they haven't brought the logs yet. One is pretty good size and will take a few days the other I agreed to so long ago I don't remember how much it is. Heard from him Monday. I am shutting down till Sept. 15 except for limited night sawing for established customers in a bind after I get those done. July August and sawing in Mississippi is not fun. The last 2 days a heat index off 100°.
I have been super busy still.
I'm not complaining about the heat this year as I sawed all winter .
I'm not good in the cold anymore.
At least in this heat my feet don't get cold.
Is it just me? I know it gets hot and humid in the south but unless it hits about 102° and 80% humidity I seem to work fine (as long as its not in the direct sun). Yeah, I end up hot, sweaty, tired, and smelly but it doesn't really slow me down. I just set my pace and work. I take breaks and hydrate usually with some home made ice tea (no sugar) or ice water. I generally take magnesium supplements during the day to prevent cramps at night. My first exposure to southern heat was basic training and AIT in Fort Polk, LA when it was known as little Vietnam. Being from Montana, I had rarely experienced heat above 80° or high humidity.
My point is, yup, its hot and its been this way every summer for eons so why complain about the weather when you know what its going to be? Suck it up and get the work done. The reward at the end of the day is a nice refreshing shower and the thought of what you accomplished in spite of the heat.
For you northerners, I grew up in Montana and and the winters were long and cold but you dealt with it. You walked to school every day barefoot, in the snow, uphill both ways :D just like your dad and at the end of the day you did the same to get home. A snow day was when it snowed, you got up and went to school, just like all the other days. When the work was there, you brushed off the snow, chipped off the ice, and did what it took to fire up then engine and get it running smooth. You drove on packed ice and snow for 6 months because that's what you did, otherwise you got cabin fever so bad that your mind started going bad. Most winters it never got above 0° F for six to eight wee ks at a time but everyone knew it and dealt with it. You still did the work that needed to be done.
So, yup, the weather is going to be what it is and God gives us the grace to deal with it every single day whether it meets our expectations or not. If you're not experiencing the wonderful weather then you're probably on the brown side of the sod. That's not something to smile about.

Y'all are both crazy.
Yup - this is the time of year that I begin to think that -40F (without the wind chill) - those were some good ice fishing nights. 0 deg F is just right for riding my Skidoo Mach 1 snowmobile 100 miles to have supper, (the track really grabs the snow at that temp) and starting a fire in the stove after coming home from the fair in August was really quite enjoyable. Yes, starting mid June through September down this way I long for the "good old days".....
I am getting pickier as to what I saw who I saw for and when I will do it. I made me up a list of 12 items the other day and when a potential customer comes up, they will get one. At the end it says if you can't live with any of this , that's ok, but if you want your logs sawed.... sign on the line. First time I have ever done that. I am tired of washing dirty logs, trimming knots and limbs, and 10 other things. My time is worth just as much as theirs...maybe more. I started to put a couple other sawyers numbers on there, but since I can't recommend them I didn't. Banjo

There is a reason for every item on this page. Ex. In #8 if wood stays here in the humid south for over a week, it's going to start to mold. It will have to be moved and stickered or it will ruin and then no one wants it. I might need to run that by my attorney, but if they sign it, I figure I got a good case. There is a stack of popular out there right now that was ready the end of June. I had one guy leave a stack of walnut here 6 weeks before he came an got it. Be glad to explain any of the others. Tim

I think your hourly rate and blade charges are low.
When sawing for someone I like having them there to off bear the mill and so they can hear the metal strike sound, it stops all arguements.

I just about always saw by myself, and to tell the truth, having somebody there at the mill makes me nervous, never know what they will do. Just breaks up my routine. When I hear the zing from a strike of big wave, I lay that back to show the customer.
Most people around here think $60.00 an hour is too much, which is fine with me as I don't want to cut small, short or crooked logs anyway. Tim
My customer and I made an "Executive" decision and decided to postpone this week's road trip sawing job until next week, so hopefully this heat will break before then.
I do still have a small ~12-15 log job scheduled for Friday & even Saturday if needed.
Marty and I will try to go back to the Cabin/farm to do some needed work, but it should all be in the shade.

I love it donbj! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) You are so right in that complaining does nothing...except to create angst and anxiety. When I was working in the corporate world, I always found that you accomplished more not by whining and complaining about something but by bringing proposed solutions to the problem. That way, you weren't adding to the problem, you were helping to solve it.

I gave up complaining about the weather when I realized nobody was going to do anything to fix it. ;D I did try holding back paying my taxes until the government figured it out, but that didn't work either, so I gave up. As long as I don't have to chip it, I am pretty good with whatever comes. It's the ice storms I hate, they get folks killed and don't do anybody any good.
Anyway, I have always just worked around the weather because for me it's an insurmountable obstacle. When we got our first house I was somewhere around 28 years old and self employed. The house needed a lot of work, but we bought it because it had two garages I could move my shop into and save that rent money. I needed to do new roofs on both buildings and it was HOT, so I would get to it at 6am and do quiet work (moving material, etc) until I could legally make noise at 7:30, then work until around 10 or 11, then move onto other stuff and get back on the roofs at around 5pm and work until 9 or so. I do recall it was so hot that I had to cover any tools on the roof with rags or they would get so hot you couldn't hold them.
I'd like to be doing the same routine these days, but I can't seem to drag my butt out there in the cool morning hours. No problem getting up on time (today was 4:30) just can't get a move on. And right now it is not even really hot here! It's only hitting 90 and the humidity gets down to 65% during the day. I am still waiting for the 95/95 days when it really knocks me down hard.
I just keep plugging along at whatever pace I can manage, any progress is better than no progress. Anything I do today does not have to be done tomorrow, and that is the thought I hang my hat on.

(Read the OP on this topic) My decision to postpone this job was based on the fact that there is no shade where the logs are staged and not working a full day when the customer is paying lodging seems unprofessional to me. Working in 95°+ temperature is a health risk and avoiding it is a good dose of reality. I will take care of some farm maintenance the first few days and then saw Friday (and Saturday if necessary). I didn't get to be this old by being lazy nor stupid.
102 actual, 110 felt. This old dog stayed in the shade/AC.

MM, this is what I mean by bringing a solution to the problem. You work around the heat issue and I am learning to get up early and get things done while I can. Sometimes I work into the evening and am finding solutions for the lack of light since in the evening and at night heat is generally not a problem.
So I equipped the 12 Mexicans with the ability to work at night. ;D (Usually the umbrella is closed at night but it made for a fun picture.)

This old coot is having trouble with the heat too, still have some oats to thrash, and a bunch of prairie hay to cut, rake and bale. Broke the spring on my mower that makes the trip hook, ordered a bunch of parts to fix it, got most of them installed, but have a couple left, now the rain is over, hope to get the oats cut and the straw baled, then need to plant some feed on that ground. That's a good one! I created the umbrella mount so I wouldn't have to be in the sun. I used an old beach umbrella I had. When I was dragging logs out of the bottomland, I only had the lame lights that Kubota puts on the tractors and a "headlight" that I wore on my forehead. I said there has to be better lighting than that...I found a 30,000 lumen LED lightbar for the front and 2 - 10,000 lumen LED lights to point to the back. $30 for the front light and $20 for the back light. I mounted them using big magnets to the roll bar. Man, you can see a long ways in the dark with them.
Now when I go into the trees it definitely looks like something from outer space landed there and is moving about. :o :D

They repaved our road today. It was warm and mostly sunny. I noticed the guy on the roller driving back and forth all day had a golf umbrella rigged up on his machine. Every once in a while he had to adjust for the suns angle. Not a super day to be on a blacktop crew.

Yeah, I agree. That's why I have a foldable umbrella instead of an old car hood like MM :D ;D. I can take it off when I am in the woods. I generally don't have enough direct sunlight to use it there.

I worked from dawn to 9 loading the next log onto the mill and putting the others on the rollway. I did pretty nicely in spite of the weather. Oh, I forgot to mention - that's 9AM. ;D
It's only 34C (93F) today, the smoke is so thick the sun can't find us.
In this heat I welcome clouds. I pass on the smoke.
Heat index was 106F this afternoon, been that way all week. Still had several hours of work to do but could not stay in the death ray any longer. Came inside for a bit to sit by a fan when I looked at my wife and said "it's raining" - she must have thought I was having heat stroke since there was no noise or anything but i could SMELL it. Sure enough - .68" or rain and a good 25 degree temp drop. Went back out and enjoyed working in the rain. Now I just hope my boots dry out on the dryer tonight.

Been baling what we call prairie hay the last couple weeks. Native grass. Really had to watch the radiator on the tractor, so much fine dust. Great relief on Saturday, only about 90. Seems cool compared to the 100's. Now if we could just get some rain.
We finished in the woods and started doing foundation stonework at the job, I rigged up a blue shade tarp, better than direct sun, more of an easy bake oven :D. Our water hoses are black, you gotta watch that first blast!

Well sunshine doesn't make it harder to breathe. One of my neighbors is on the second day of burning brush too slowly and it is beginning to wear on me.
102° yesterday, after 8 1/2 hours, I was done. Woke up to rain this morning and it's more than welcome with all the fires burning.

I looked at the cloud yesterday afternoon in the NW, and someone must have gotten rain, we got a few sprinkles. Surprise this morning, 70 degrees. Thought I was going to have to find a sweat shirt.

Been away for a couple of weeks. Came home Saturday and AC was not working. House was a humid oven. Not a very comfortable weekend. Being without AC in Georgia in August is a very poor option. That is why AC was invented :).
I know your misery, Danny. I keep a small window unit to use in the bedroom and can use the attic fan for a hot, humid breeze.
The attic fan brought in the hot humid air and I had to turn it off in the middle of the 100% humidity night. Trying to sleep and the sheets were sticking to my body.
A lot of places in the south wouldn’t make it without AC lol . I spent almost 2 years living in AZ , when heat waves hit, people died, it was normal. Why people chose to settle there I haven’t a clue. 1 hour up the mountain towards flagstaff will fix ya real quick though.

We were sawing before 8:00 this morning and by 10:30 my 72 year old 'repeat' customer had croaked. He had that towel wet and over his head like unto an Arab or something but he couldn't take any more and I did not want him to 'actually' croak. Our intention was to only saw until noon anyway, so we called it a day.
We will be sawing by 6:00 in the morning so we should make some production. As a note; I sawed all of the lumber in 2003 for his home seen in the background.
Can t ignore this heat and humidity. Over a 100 on my temp. Sun is blistering. Finally, rain, temp went to 75. My crops needed the rain.
Shop work during the heat. Milling in the evening with all the biting bugs.
For 33 years, starting in 1974, I built one house a year to sell. I'd start in the Fall, have it closed in by cold weather, finish the inside during cold weather, dress up the outside, and sell it in the Spring. Then I'd take the Summer off to play on the lake.
My original intention was Summers off, but the older I get, trying to do any work in this heat, the smarter I was.

The US military has restricted caffeine intake during duty hours for some years now as it promotes heat stroke. I first ran into the caffeine rule around mid 1980's at Ft Hood, Texas where it gets even hotter than it is right now in KY, which is bad enough. Smothers you when you walk out early a.m.!!!

We make half caf with 1/4 cup of sugar/gallon, pretty much water :D. A couple of bottles of water and I think I'm still rolling crystals. The june early season good drying days are done, it is sticky. The truck arrived on the stroke of noon and we had him gone by 2, we were done by 5. The late start was good really. I had a minor ding from the inspector, had time to correct it yesterday, shoot him a pic this morning and he had emailed back before I left, all good. I think I'm cooled down enough to take a shower without drowning in sweat. My people do not glow, we flow :D. It was the driver's first day back, he rolled one 3 months ago and almost didn't make it. I had heard about it but that was all. Warm, but a good day.

I had a high of 60 yesterday & My daughter that lives 20 miles south of Me had 90. Lake Superior is a good air conditioner for Me when there's a north wind. I'm about 15 miles south of it.

We roofed a 36'x40' shed this morning with metal roofing. At least we did not have a breeze to interfere with us lifting 40' sheets up metal up. Thankfully, we started early and finished before 10:30. I was soaked from head to toe. In a little while, after it warms up a bit, John and I have some lumber to move around, stack and then probably saw a whack of 1x6's. The news readers said the heat index would be 112° from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. but I really don't know what that means. It will be warm enough.
Here in Kansas it is only 93 so far today. Yesterday the high was 101 but the heat index was about 104. Have been baling oats, alfalfa and some sweet clover . Trying to get my planter to work, forgot I hired a guy to plant my beans last year, so the old planter is kind of stiff. Markers still won't come down, but I got the boxes planting. There are so many volunteer beans from last year, plan to split the rows so the markers aren't so important till I get to the oats ground.

Chamber of commerce day today. I came home about 4 yesterday to load wood to take to the kiln when we got 60+mph wind then the bottom fell out for a short while. The temp dropped to 60 overnight and its 72 with 26% humidity today, I'll take it 8)

I told Miss K this morn'in that you were gonna be cook'in Lynn when I saw the forecast for down your way. I'd never make it in that southern heat--- its way hotter than our hot up here. I put quite a few 50-60 foot old growth doug-fir on the ground today. It got up to 78* today up by rainbow trail with a bit of breeze this afternoon--- I didn't have to put an extra shirt on though.lol.

I have 18-20 Pine logs to saw into framing lumber starting tomorrow. If we can't finish we may saw half and wait until Wed. to saw the rest. Don't know yet because I have not met the customer nor seen the logs.

I don't know how you guys can function down there, my hat's off to you for being able to work in that heat. I know it gets cold up here, but most of the time I can dress for it. She got a little warm up here today, 30C with the humidity bumping it up to 45. Not sure what to turn the numbers for you boys south of the border, except it was hot, real hot for me, We quite sawing at 11.
Not sure how those numbers translate either, but I do know Holden wrecks and boilin' diesels steam in 45°. And the western desert lives and breathes in 45°.

Per your comment and many others below: I am "intrigued", if that's the best word choice by all the TV evening news pundits who work inside and tell "US" who work outside what the weather is out there! :D
Then on another equally somewhat nasty subject called energy prices we have folks on cable news who probably ride around in uber/taxi/black limos and tell us how much we pay for gas and diesel. It's made worse by the news emphasis on east coast/ west coast information that barely applies to fly over land.

Does the USA military still use "Sweat bulb readings" to determine duty & training temperatures? I'm long removed from such knowledge these days.
It is kind of weird presently in the southeast that in low humidity, even when it is 104 degrees, that sweat evaporates as quick as it forms. It gives you a false sense of being cool and hydrated properly. I'm used to changing clothes a couple time a day.
I've found the same thing when I am out West. Around here I know I'm constantly reminded to rehydrate because I have sweat coming off me in sheets. I can see myself getting into trouble in dry heat.
It has been a cool, wet spring, crops are not doing well but at least no fires unlike last year. But it looks like summer is here with 27C today and well into the thirties next week which should help the tree fruits ripen.
It is 10° cooler here today but the humidity is twice as high so 94°with this 60% humidity is worse than the 104° with 25% humidity. When the air is heavy with humidity and hot at the same time, that is called sultry, sweltery. That will suck the motivation out of you. The older I get, the more motivation gets unmotivated with this heat :).
Yep Danny, muggy weather just saps me. I don't even like going outside if it's sticky. I know a lot of you shudder to think of enduring our Minnesota winters, but gosh a Georgia summer is what scares me🥵🥵🥵

My thermomether has said 82 all day today. It was 82 when I got up and is still 82 now. I'll take it. It will be back to near 100 early this week.
Only 70's weather here so far this summer, love'n it. Yesterday was barely 60F by noon, but by 4:00 it reached 72F. Not much different for today, maybe 76F. Had lots of rain this year, 1-3/4" this week. Everything is lush and growing like gangbusters. I have an elder bush stalk that grew 6' in June from the ground up. :o
So, I got up today and my thermometer, which is a fancy weather station, said 82. I thought that can't be right. Well, it turns out my outdoor sensor had dead batteries. I have no idea what the temp actually was the other day. It's 85 today.

Thankfully I have no sawing scheduled, but there is still some tractor/trail work at the Cabin getting everything ready for our "4th" trail rides and scavenger hunt.
That's some incredible heat. We lived in Oklahoma for a few years, and 95 was a daily high during the summer. But as they say, "its a dry heat". That's true, so it was hot, but I seemed to adjust to it. But 100, if there's any humidity, would require some kind of special physical ability to tolerate.
Personally, I'd rather endure some cold winter weather than such nasty heat. But being near family overrides everything. If you ever make it to Conway, NH, be sure to send a PM!!!!

I've been working outside under the shed today. Cleaned and sharpened the Echo 450 and repaired the old Pouland Pro 38cc. I didn't get around to cleaning up the little Husky. It's just to hot to work out in the sun. Well, our electricity just came back on. Time to go turn the old generator off again.
I'll be cleaning heat pump and mini split condenser coils tomorrow, and enjoying the results. I'll work in mornings until Fall.
Sawmill work around my place is not on any critical schedule (mostly hobby stuff and friends' requests). However, when working this time of year, we usually break up the work time on these extreme heat days. Work from dawn (5 AM here) to about 10-11 am and break 'til about 3-4 PM. Then continue working 3-4 PM until Dark-thirty. This lets us get work accomplished and stay out of the worst of the heat. Actually, with this schedule, we found out that more gets accomplished over the course of the day. In addition, employees or helpful workers are happier with this schedule.
I have a 60" warehouse exhaust fan mounted on a small trailer. The fan follows me around at the shop, Sawmill and most any work area. Considering the extreme heat, moving air is better than still air. Several other repurposed air handler and pole fans are strategically placed around the work areas. This is one advantage of a stationary mill.
We have several patio umbrellas that were rescued from curbside trash pick-up and restored to usable condition (holes and fading do not matter). These Umbrellas are placed around sitting and work areas. We also use the umbrellas when we need to rescue/repair equipment broken down in a field or other full sun area. A little shade can keep you a touch more happy working in the heat.
We have had a couple of instances where the highway has expanded and exploded from the heat. smiley_sun

We don't have that problem. The dirt road doesn't mind the heat and the potholes in the county asphalt roads allow for expansion of the small amount of asphalt that's left.
60's and 70's here this week and overcast, but I still start up the clearing saw before 6:00 am. That gets adjusted as we lose morning light from here on out. Won't notice much change though until almost August.
It has been over cast with come and go clouds /showers last several days. Temps in upper 70's with the clouds but when sun comes out it is like a steam bath with 99% humidity. I have been sawing one beam, cleaning up the scrap, and stacking any boards each morning. That puts me at mid day and time for a cold one before doing projects/chores around the farm.

It was 102 here today and tomorrow should be about the same. I did a little work outside in the morning, but the rest of the day I was in the shop with the AC on. We sure could use some rain.
97 here yesterday and supposed to hit 101 today -- to put that into perspective, back in 2005 through 2013 when the kids were all graduating it would hit 100F easily before the end of May and when they graduated (4 of them -- one graduated in Canada) it was over 100F each time (105F for the oldest) around June 1st.
Last year waited until July to hit 100 and this year is almost there! Crazy. At our Cabin 265 miles north we're seeing the same swing in temps (to lower) which is awesome because we're getting more water with them! :D
But yes, going to be hot! We're not used to the 100s anymore LOL

100° here right now. Way to hot. I've got a fan running under the shed and I'm finally taking a day to work on the mill again. As long as I can stay in the shade and in the breeze and keep some ice water close by I think I can make some progress. Even if it is very slow. I'm working on a frame for the blade guards today. I don't know when I'll get another chance to work on it. Mill days seem to be few and far between right now.

I made my planned trip to the Cabin yesterday afternoon delivering supplies, etc. for the 4th and turned the AC and the drink cooler on. Marty will go today and make a final look-see on the trails, etc.

Going to a fourth celebration chicken BBQ, picnic, fireworks and bonfire this afternoon.
Calling for low 80s and scattered showers.
My friend puts this on every year and wont take and $ from us for anything.
He spends about 400 bucks on fireworks alone.
A very nice private fireworks display and really nice time with lots of friends.
Summer has not been hot here yet.

Sure hope it starts to warm up, up this way--- front porch had a skim of ice this morn'in and there was a bit of frost on the short grass--- hay is only gonna be at 50% if we don't get some heat this season.
Spent the day milling pine logs into cants for future beams. Hot and humid in CT - smoke from the mapleleaf land to the North didn't help with air quality any... :)
Dew point of 74 right now in Southeastern PA. I go back and forth with whether I like milling in warm versus cooler weather. My joints feel a lot better right now than they do in January outside, but after working the mill for a few hours in this heat/humidity, I am washed out for the rest of the day.
I have learned to do the hot work in the am and then work inside in the AC later in the day.
My father (now age 94), always told me and my siblings this would happen! ::)
I just came in from the garden. It's only 79 right now, but I'm soaking wet. That humidity is a killer. I try to get anything that's going to be in the sun done as early as possible. After that sun gets going I need to find a shady spot preferably with a fan to be productive.
84F here right now, heat index is 97 at the moment, was 110 yesterday, miserable.
60 here this morning. Yesterday hit 90+ as I was sawing for a customer all day. we had to stop for 3 thunder boomers. I swear the rain drops were the size of golf balls. Man it sure got hot and humid when the sun came out and cooked the rain.
It's 77 here right now. I finished my grilling right after daylight. Probably won't get much done today, just visiting and eating too much. digin_2

It had rained for a week in Virginia and then we got the sunshine which brings the humidity. Its been 80-82 for several days and the humidity has been rated at 70% which is enough for a full body soak. Been enjoying the geothermal benefits of my subterranean basement.
Not saying that it was really HOT but yesterday I was sweating so much that I hydroplaned off of the toilet seat and landed in the bath tub! :o
Silver lining you didn't have to turn the water on to take a bath. We have had so many mosquitos that you can not use your cars back up camera there are just to many. :D
We stopped sawing both yesterday and today because of the heat. The umbrella was saving me but the tailgunners were suffering and there was no need to risk their safety. We will be back Monday when the temperature is forecast for only 93°, but back up to 98° Thursday & Friday.

I don't know how hot it was here today, but we broke for lunch around 1 and when went back out 20 minutes later, it was sweltering. We may have painted Tom Sawyer's fence later today. A guy saw my CL ad and asked if I wanted a pine tree he cut down in his yard. We bucked it into 16' logs but my 70 hp Kubota would not lift it high enough to get out of the guy's yard or onto our trailer. It was a wolfy beast, but I think we can slab it and come out okay.
We got three of the four scheduled saw jobs done today. If everyone who ordered lumber shows up with their money, we'll have done okay today. I got in my parents' pool for the first time in years. The water was probably 90° but it was still refreshing and cooler than the outside air at 5p.m.
Canthook motor overheating. Thing just won't stay working. I have to drag it to the shade, douse it liberally with ice water, and let it lay around a while. I've decided it just old cantankerous and don't want to work when it gets this hot. We are high 90s-100+ over the next week with that famous Mississippi humidity. I'm all manual and running the mill in this weather whips me pretty fast. Got that log turner setup posted here on my list for this winter.

I've been working till around noon then sneaking back out foe maybe an hour or so a couple times in the afternoon. It's just too hot and humid to stay out.
In this heat, I'm on MM's suggested milling schedule, "knocked off at 11, start again November 11".

We are only at the 22nd consecutive day in a row that's over a 100* so far this year. Last year we had 47. I suppose that means we're having it easy this year? :-\ Next Thursday I have the privilege of spending a week in Woodstock, Ill. visiting my dad. It'll only be in the 80's up there! Woo-Hooo!!

My workmate has just got back form a trip to Italy, wasn't impress as it was both hot and crowded. Stopped off for a few days in Dubai on the way home. Daytime temp there was about 50C (122F).

NY State High, taxes, deeply divided politics between NYC, Long Island and upstate BUT temps the last week here at my place in the low 50s in the am, mid to high seventies in the PM.
We are still working on our 2024 firewood and while the work gets harder for me in my mid 80s the temps are very conducive to cutting, skidding bucking splitting and stacking so far.
But, the dog days of August R NEARLY upon us.

Not snow shoveling, but that reminded me of years ago I drove refer semi truck and loaded out of food manufacturing / distribution centers. Would pick up pizzas, French fries or other frozen products from warehouses where the entire building inside was kept 0° year round. All the workers were dressed in parkas, stocking caps, gloves, and could see there breath while working. And as soon as you opened the outside door you braced yourself for the temp shock, as it was 95° and sunny. :o :snowman: smiley_sun
I have logs on the deck but it is just too hot to saw when I get home. I will be leaving Tuesday for 10 days in the Austrian Alps. Hopefully, it won't be so hot when I get back.

It's not the heat it's the humidity. I'm just kidding. It has been hot in a lot of places and really hot in some others. I guess it has just been hot here and I have reached a point in my life that if something is not broken or I'm not getting paid, I'm not working in the heat of the day. There was several days this summer that I worked until noon or one and hung out inside until it started cooling off around 6 pm and then plugged away for a few more hours.
Three shirts a day was not uncommon this summer on work days. Several years ago, I remember MM mentioning some Gold Bond Powder. Good call. There is another product called Anti-Monkey Butt that also seems to be useful this time of the year in the nether regions.
Pedialyte is a product JMoore used last summer after the bear got after him one hot July morning. He said it kept him out of the emergency room. The heat is no joke and as we get older, it seems to get after us a little bit more. Water is good but sometimes it is not enough.
Some of you will see snow before we see a daytime high of 85°. Stay safe.

I have actually run my heat pump a few times when house temp gets to the mid 60s.
humidity high a lot, the dehumidifiers in the house and my shop run constantly keeping it to mid 40s RH.
with all the rain I have to mow the lawn about every 5 days.
Wish I could ship some-of this cool stuff to you over heated folks.

Oh I feel for you guys. That is hot. We are getting it here In the great white north too. Kelona( city in our province) is burning up. Homes burning faster than mill slabs. And way up north, a city of 20,000 people has been evacuated because of a monster wildfire. When the snow's finally arrive. I promise not to complain 😜

Glad this heat wave is pretty much behind us, too bad my sawmill jobs were last week and I had to suffer through 100° temps. Most of this week will be spent on the excavator in the smoke from all of the foredt fires in the region.

Supposed to hit 107 Tuesday and Wednesday up at the cabin, 103 here. 99 tomorrow. It's not hard boiled eggs I fear, it's precooked steaks.
Yesterday was 107 in the shade on my back porch. Today it is 111. Two days ago, I started watering a huge White Oak tree near the driveway to my barn. The top leaves are turning orange(ish) brown. I noticed an elm and sweetgum turning brown at the top also. As of August 17, there have been 37 days this year where the temperature has reached at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Conroe, Texas. In 2011, 52 days over 100. No wonder I am only outside 2 hours each morning!
I was visiting with my outdoor equipment dealer last week. He remarked he remembers the hottest part of the day, while growing up, was 3pm. Now it is hottest at 5pm. I said that is right, as Mom wouldn't let us go swimming between 10 am and 5pm. We were always in the pool at 4:59 and 59 seconds!

I sawed today from 9 a.m. to 12:30 pm and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
My tail gunners were a friend (customer) and his son-in-law. Apparently the SIL (35 years old) got too hot cleaning up AFTER the sawing was over. He took a trip to the ER. My friend is 48 and I'm 60. I'm thinking the SIL didn't drink enough water.
I'm sure the heat index was upper 90's on the gravel pad where we were working.
Be careful out there! The heat can overwhelm quickly and without regard for age. Maybe knowing how to live to fight another day comes with age?
Bella Vista had a heat index of 131 today. Unheard of, I'm about 30 miles south and heat index here was 111.
We got that tropical wind bag Hillary hitting southern California spinning bands of clouds and humidity up here in Sacramento. Only hit 85 or 90 today but our normal 15-20% humid must have hit 80% today! I was pouring concrete under my house, drinking a LOT of water and I was totally soaked in sweat. I kept seeing drops of water and I was thinking it was raining. No such luck, just my sweat. Even my leather belt was soggy.

Finally, gonna be in mid 70s this weekend down here in south Louisiana. Then back to mid 80s next week. This summer has been brutal with no rain, no clouds and just sun beaming down all day.

I think summer is coming to an end here. The tropical storm is suppose to collide with a cold front and make lots of rain and drop the daily highs 20 degrees by Monday. A normal October temperature range. But it was not unusually hot in my area, a little more rain than normal, only had AC on in July, nothing hotter than 85F except a couple days in the spring hit 90F. I've seen snow lots of Octobers on Canadian Thanks Giving (this weekend) and we would be hunting birds, and Sunday morning be towing a trailer home through 6" of snow on woods roads with 2 wheel drive. :D Never even had a frost locally yet. They'd predict 30's for some mornings, it would be mid 40's here and I wondered where the heck they was. :D The last two weeks of weather have been great with the leaves changing. :)
It looks like our Summer and HOT weather has broken and is gone with the highest 10 day forecast temp @ 85°. That is good but the drought persists in hanging on. We have a 25-50% chance of precipitation later next week.
I am disking and planting simply because I am running out of time. I hope my seeds see some of that 25-50%.
Looks like I spoke too soon. Cold front did not push down far enough. 82°F today and 77°F tomorrow.
Still better than 100°F.
Pretty dry here. A customer dropped a cigarette butt in a patch of old sawdust and it smoldered for several hours before I discovered it. Luckily, it was not near anything.

That customer, at my sawmill yard, would get a good talking to about smoking on site. Basically, at my yard there was no smoking at all. If they wanted to smoke, they'd have to sit in their car/truck and left the butt in their ashtray.

When my kids were young, no one was allowed to smoke on my property, even my parents. they have both since (15 years) died of lung cancer. My daughter once saw my dad smoking about age 8 and said "WOW" when smoke came out his mouth and nose. back in the day, it was promoted as good for the nerves in the military. I understand it is addictive and that most folks of that generation smoked. Now they vape. I started as a respiratory therapist in 1980 to work through school and then 85% of RTs smoked. I did not want them to think it was cool cause they saw grandpa smoking. Out of respect I assume most folks do not even think of smoking on my property. We burn stuff in a barrel around the sawmill, and that is prob. a bigger fire hazard. The sawdust can smolder like a punk. I am responsible for that. I still remember doing a demo at @customsawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861) event where I used potassium permanganate and glycerin to demo spontaneous combustion to start fires, and my sawdust made fire starters. A good time was had by all. :) I have a big burn barrel from a combine wheel, and if I have coals in there, I then fill it to the top with sawmill dust/shavings and it never catches fire but smolders away over 4 days or so.
Yea, some of us remember you thinking that starting a fire in a sawmill building was a good idea. :D

It seems we are done with the hot for the year. 36 deg as I type this. Was 60 deg yesterday for the high. Probably about same for today. Supposed to be a warm fall, so I assume that means a lot of 60s. I wont complain about that.
got a lot done yesterday. heat tolerance must wane as we get older. Or we choose not to push and get acclimated to the heat, and only work hard when we want! :)

It looks like we might get some precipitation Sat, Sun, & Mon of this and next week and with the temps dropping to 24° toward the middle of the week. There is Snow in for 2am Monday. Of course those forecasts are for the valley, not where we will be. We need to be prepared for and expect anything.

Was 32 here yesterday at day break, didn't see what this morning was but pretty close.
Beautiful here in RI. mid 60's and clear since a DOWNPOUR on Saturday. We are going to have a Hot spell climbing toward 80 this week ( 1919 80deg current high temp record for this Saturday).
The burn bans in several parishes around Baton Rouge have been lifted and the first meaningful rain since May has fallen last night. Several inches of standing water at the sawmill shed but that will be gone by midday.
We got our first snow last night, just a dusting but it's here. :'(
