CS590 with a 24" bar

Hi folks,

Still considering the CS590 to replace my dead MS290 (in my earlier thread I kept calling it an 029.  I had that stuck ion my head for some reason).  I leaning towards the 20".  But I might go with the 18" if I could fit this saw with a 24" when needed.  Does anyone know if they make a 24" bar for the 590 that would run a skip chain for those larger logs I run into?  Any thoughts on that might work on the 60 cc 3.9 hp powerhead of the 590?

Also, do skip chains work when felling a tree or trying to make a stab cut on a leaning tree?  Starting to learn how to work on leaners without killing anyone.

Lastly, I read about most folks having more than 1 saw, "just in case".  I assume that you have saws that all take the same mix?  It would be a paint pain to carry around 40:1 and 50:1.  I am considering buying an AM cylinder and see if the gear head lady at work will rebuild my 290 for me.  This would give me a back up saw for about $75 or so.

Oregon has 240RNDD176 24" .050 gauge that will fit, 81 drive links. Skip tooth works just fine for felling and would be a good idea on your saw, burying a 24" bar will push the limits. Most manufacturers specify 50:1 for the current offerings although many here advocate going to 40:1 or even 32:1. Run the same mix as your Stihl.

I use the Stihl mix in the gray bottle for everything 2 cycle. Husqvarna weedeater, Stihl and Echo chainsaws.

 Don't be going by manufactures hp ratings, you'll find the 3.9 hp Echo cuts  WAY faster than the 3.8 hp MS290, not even close.  Steve

Not to get this thread off on a mix gas rant,but I use 40:1 in my 372 and my efco and my wife's weed eater trimmer. Been doing this for years. All are running fine,so far.  But the saw is tuned to that mix too.

I think the 20" bar on my CS590 is a perfect match for the saw. Echo makes a 24" that they say will work but I think you would need a little more HP to use it more then occasionally.

My cs590 came with the 20 inch bar but I have replaced it with an 18 inch from Oregon.
The original Bar was probably made by Oregon but the replacement I got is a better Bar and Chain.
I suppose you could use a 24 inch bar periodically if needed.

With only 81dl it is of course not a true 24" - but that's the way they are with some tail patterns.

The 029/290 family saws are well known for their inefficient powerbands, and an ol' 029 is only 54cc or so, not rated at 3.8 hp.
