I am planning to build a timber frame shop I would like to know what width I could go and still have a vaulted ceiling until the collar tie.I plan to use 6x8" red pine beams on 10' centers. this will be located in southern Iowa so snow load and code are not a problem. Thanks Steve

We must need a picture  :).

Collar ties should be ceiling joists at the plate level if possible. As you raise the tie the stresses rise fast. If you can design a ridgebeam to support the rafters, basically the rafters hanging from the ridge, then you can raise or eliminate the rafter ties.
