I want to ID the flywheel on a 044, is the serial number on the back side? The reason I want to know is because I replaced the wrong (064) ignition module it had with a new 044 Chinese one. Now it kicks back so hard it yanks the pull cord out of my hand so I assume its firing to soon, anyway getting back to the flywheel I want to check the part number to make sure it's for a 044 and not a 064. I have a flywheel puller on order, looks like two week wait to see if the number is on the back side.
Also anyone know how to check the timing on a 044?

044 parts list shows flywheel 1128 400 1214 or 1128 400 1215 (heated carb model).
Husky: 372xt, 272xp, 61, 55 (x3)...Poulan: 315, 4218 (x3), 2375, 2150, 2055, 2000 (x3)...Stihl 011AVT...Homelite XL...Saws come in broken, get fixed or parted, find new homes

Hi HuckFin
Doug is correct, the 044 is an 1128 series machine, and the 064 is an 1122 series. 90% of all the parts on Stihl machines will have the series code stamped on them somewhere...so just make sure that the coil and flywheel both have "1128" on them and you should be good to go.
There is no timing to be checked on these saws as they have CDIC coils which do the advancing and retarding automatically. Ensure that the air-gap between the flywheel (at the magnets) and coil is set correctly at 0.15 - 0.3mm (0.006 - 0.12").

The ignition module for the 044 and 064 are the same.Part #0000 400 1300.
Even the 038 uses the same coil.
Most of the time the ignition part number would be different just because of a slight difference in length of the high tension lead and nothing else.
044 Flywheel is Part #1128 400 1214 .The flywheel from a 064 (Part # 1122 400 1203) would not fit.
If you are getting that backfire when pulling the starter with a Chinese coil, that is quite usual since the triggering thyristor in the Chinese coil might not have a perfect value.
What I do is use a round file to make the screw holes on the coil wider so that I can retard the ignition a bit.
A wider airgap helps at times, even an additional cylinder gasket (if your crankshaft is slightly worn)

Hot saw builders routinely advance the timing to increase performance. So, chances are if you learn to start it like it is it will outperform the changes that you are thinking of making. My flat top 066 will take the meat off your fingers if you get lazy getting it over the top. But, it runs like crazy.

so is the saw a 044 or a 064, some of 064 had 2 different key ways in the flywheel , same as some of the earlier 066 and if you got the wrong coil mixed with the flywheel in the wrong key way it would rip your fingers off, way to far advanced

Thanks everyone for the info. I finally got a flywheel puller and the number is correct for a 044 (1128 400 1200b) and the key wasn't sheared. I followed Joe Indies advice (post #4) and filed the screw holes .001 to .002 with a dremel tool on the retard side and no more kickback. There was no way in hell I could pull start that saw without it yanking the pull cord handle out of my hand (painfully) the way that Chinese coil was set up.
