I am building a shed roof on my shop and plan on using 8x8 post and top beams.  Where the beams meet on the post at the corner what is the best way to cut the beam for a strong connection.  I found this picture that has similar post and beam design, but instead of a porch on top I will have a shed roof.  I was not using the metal brackets like the picture.  It looks like they cut beams at a 45 over the corner post.  Could I do a half lap with the beams at the corner?

Are you fixed on using 8x8's that meet on an 8x8 post? What about using a narrower beam?

I was planning on using all 8x8 oak post and beams.

Don P

I dug these out of some emails with @Jeff from his build this spring.

Don P  that is what I was thinking about but had not seen anywhere.  it looks like both beams are supported at the edge and can be connected with dowels.  Thanks
