Clearing a few acres... fall the trees, or dig & push over?

Id say that the only limitations are how much you want to dig first to loosen the stump,and the size of your machine. What we clear around here is usually less than 3 feet DBH.
Size isn't so much an issue as the weight of the tree itself is doing a lot of the work for you once you get it started.

We routinely take down oak trees that are more than 48" DBH. Biggest we've done since I've been there was a 78" willow oak. That one took an excavator and the track loader. Dig out a hole big enough, and get most of the roots busted loose, and any tree will go over.
