where are chains filed to 15 degrees used i have only used 30 degree chain because i only cut soft wood

HolmenTree

Frozen wood, especially frozen birch, elm, oak etc. Chainsaw millers can go 15 degrees but usually run 0 -10 degrees. Soft metal cutting such as aluminum cutting with a fullhouse chain [cutters sequence with no gap].

Simplicityguy92 are you milling or crosscutting?  When I milled with a chainsaw, I sharpened my chains 7-10.  Crosscutting I sharpen 20-25.  I find this good for my needs as I bounce between pine/poplar and oak/beech.  Just my 0.02 ;D ;)
Always liked wood with alot of character

Your square ground chisel chain comes ground at 20 degrees. I believe some guys cut with chisel chain at 15 degrees.

Personally, I find 15 deg to last longer for crosscutting, although it's a bit slower (I only cut hardwoods).

If you were doing a mix of crosscutting and ripping with the same chain, I suppose 15 would be a good middle ground.

I purchased two loops of Oregon thin ripping chain, from baileys, for a mill and 15dgree was the recommended angle for that chain
