Title: Just another day in Paradise
Post by: PAmizerman on July 18, 2018, 11:51:57 PM
I figured its about time I started my own milling thread. Everyone please feel free to post in this thread.

So Western PA has been extremely rainy this year. This week has been no different.
I came out to the mill yard yesterday after 4.25 inches of rain in about 36 hours to find this

Luckily there was no damage to the lumber. So I took five minutes and got it cleaned up

I set it aside to be sawn into firewood later and got back to sawing and finished the 4x17 beams I was working on

Very nice. I have equipment envy, yours is bigger than mine. I wanted a skytrack but couldn't find one in my price range that wasn't old and ragged out or had a ton of hours. We have had the opposite problem here in west Michigan  hot and humid with little to no rain in weeks. I'm working in a dust bowl over here.

If you were closer busy Beaver we could swap equipment back and forth :D
I'd love to get set up with an edger.
How's you're new equipment working out for you?
Title: Re: Just another day in Paradise

There are definitely days I could use more muscle in the lifting dept . Today for example I had to split a stack of walnut that my bobcat wouldn't lift. I could get it to lift about 2ft but no more. I made a flat stack, no stickers 5ft x 4ft of 11 and 12ft 5/4 and had to scramble to split it so I could get it to the grader in time to get a check this week. My equipment has been pretty good so far.  The mill has had some bugs but with the help of the forumites and woodmizer it seems to be running smooth now. I had some intermittent problems that seem to have been solved with a new ECU. Nothing that's kept me from running, just some hiccups now and then. Anybody who ever turned wrenches knows it's the intermittent problems that are the hardest to solve. When something is flat out broken it's usually pretty easy to diagnose.  The edger has already saved me a ton of time . I don't know how the gas ones are for power but the diesel doesn't even sound like its breaking a sweat feeding it 5/4 walnut or 4/4 hickory and hard maple.

I was thinking you went to Paradise for the day. ;D
We use to go to the auction there in Loretto. The produce and flower one.

well a little more than half. That slab pile is stacked 18' high. It needs to get cold out so I can move some of it!
Uh oh I may get banned for that comment. :snowball:

Today was an almost wide head day!
I maxed my mill out. The customer wanted a live edge slab from his log.

Got that done and it started raining again.
And I didn't feel like getting soaked bucking logs so I realigned my laser that has been a tad off.

I believe I got this idea from @ElectricAL
It is the quickest most effective way I've found.

Then I got the Bibby attachment permanent on my mill

Title: Re: Just another day in Paradise

Build a slab cabin. Make it entirely with slabs :)
Title: Re: Just another day in Paradise
Post by: PAmizerman on August 08, 2018, 06:39:37 PM

I sell them cheap for firewood.
I sell them bundled just as they are
And precut by the pick up load.
My slab cutting rack and a 3' bar make short work of it.

I'm finally getting some logs in now. It's been so wet here I have not been able to get logs in for a couple months. My stash was getting really low.
Now I'm getting hammered. I had three loggers contact me this week.

I'll be getting a triaxle load in tomorrow.

Nice rack! I need to build myself something like that. I have been sliding them off my mill into a pile and using the grappler on my bobcat to pile them into a mountain of mess. Really need to do something about that.

Sawed a bunch of live edge slabs the other day. I've been having more and more requests for them.
Anyone ever saw apple?
This was my first time. Not sure how they will dry. It was either slabs or firewood.
And I didn't feel like splitting firewood :D

Yup that's my firewood cutting rack. I was unloading a log truck today and had customers waiting. I don't even remember backing into it. I never felt it in that big machine. Guess I'll be building another one.

If you have lumber going sideways, You are cutting down on the wrong face .
Title: Re: Just another day in Paradise
Post by: PAmizerman on October 02, 2018, 09:08:18 AM
Thanks Peter. I'm aware. There was a big ugly knot that I didn't want in the face of every board. I knew it was going to go sideways on me but I didn't think it would go that much. I left the can't an inch wide to edge out the crook. But that wasn't enough.
He is going to use them as runners on a hay wagon so a little crook wouldn't be an issue. But 4" :o I don't think he would be happy with that. I know I wouldn't.

I've been swamped with orders. Things looked like they might slow down a little and I could finally get started on my sharpening shed!

Nope. had a guy roll in with a couple loads of nice ash he wants sawn. He says he has about 5000 feet down and ready to bring over. It's been a good year for me
I guess I'll just keep buying blades if I don't get my equipment up and running ;D

Your land looks similar to mine as far as having to carve space out if the hills. Thankfully my ground is mostly sand so not much mud. I do get some areas of liquified sand though. It looks solid but when you step in it ya sink up to your calf. It's what we call mud season in Michigan right now it goes from October until June most years. There is generally a few ice seasons mixed in between as well. The key here is to flatten out the ruts right before the ground freezes or else your stuck dealing with lumpy frozen ground for a couple months.

Just a little soggy! :D
The ytd precipitation for here is just over 57 inches so far. It has been non stop rain here.

I've had mud since last November. Usally I'll smooth things up before it freezes. Last winter it never really froze here.
It's just been mud mud mud.

I only got my hole dug because it didn't rain for 36 hours prior.  8) it was nice not having a day and a half of rain!
The sun even came out the one day  :)

yea. the ones I keep seeing start about 23k. I can't justify that. I think I will get a 3.5 ton mini excavator. it will be more versatile for me. I already have 28 hp Kubota with loader so that works ok. just need to build a grapple for it.

Here is one from where she was sitting.  Same style as yours with the main carriage that slides as the first stage of the boom.  It does have the tilt head so I am going to make or find a grapple for it and use that hydraulic feature to keep from chasing logs around.  Needs a tire, foam filled of course, but other than that it's just some small stuff here and there to deal with.  5,xxx hours so for the age not bad at all.

Telehandlers can be tricky to scoop logs off the ground with. I want to get a farma grapple to use on mine eventually.

I think I am going to re-plumb the joysticks so the boom up down and fork tilt are on the same stick, and cariage out / squirt boom are on the other stick. Not sure why they were not set that way to begin with.

Southside, in my experience with them you want to be able to raise/lower and boom in/out at the same time in many situations. Hence them being on the same stick. Allows smoother operation.
But if some other configuration works better for you, give it a try.

Thanks MM. I'm actually using up a bunch of lumber that I've had laying around that was not that great of quality that I wouldn't sell to customers but hated to just pitch it.

Southside
You will love the new machine.
Thats how my machine is plumbed. I have found it handy to be able to boom in and down or vise a versa at the same time.
What is the lift capacity on that one?

6,000 lbs when pulled in, 1,500 when fully extended with the carriage all the way forward.  She actually paid for herself today.

This morning I could not find a first calf heifer that never ventures far so I went looking for her, we have had so much rain this year and even more lately.  Well that gal found a new spring hole that I have walked over many times in wet conditions and never had a problem, she was sunk to her neck.  I went to check on her and on her left side I could stand on the surface while sinking in maybe a few inches, walked to the other side and WHAM, I went down to my waist with one leg, complete liquification of the ground.  My excavator might have been able to reach in that far, but getting it down there would have been an issue and I don't think she would have made it between some trees so I would have had to deal with that and I didn't have time to waste.  So I went and grabbed the Lull, drove it right between the trees and up to what I knew was solid ground, extended the carriage and boom most of the way out there, grabbed a couple 4" straps and made a sling around the poor girl, had to get into the mud up to my chest to make it happen but she was very cooperative.  Took a couple of lift and withdraw the boom moves along with re-adjusting the sling but I got her up onto solid ground.  I do have an "Upsy Daisy" but there was no way to get that on her as deep as she was.  After a minute of letting her stand there I un did the harness and she slowly walked out of there and went right to grazing, been walking and eating all day ever since so I think she is fine.  I did throw a horse blanket on her to help keep her warm, the mud is not our normal red clay, more of a blue marine type clay and it forms like concrete on you, had to pressure wash my clothes after to get it off enough to throw in the washer.  Of course with all the jigging and moving back and forth to get the machine into place in the beginning I had broken the ground surface so now the Lull was stuck.  Called a buddy who came over and we brought my Franklin skidder down there, 40,000 lb winch made short work of that problem.  I guess that's one way to find out the real world capabilities of a machine, not that I want to do that again mind you, but yes worth every penny already.

Very handy in deed. Mine has the same lift capacity listed but I have a feeling it will lift more.

We had a calf born last week as well. No Lull needed yet though :D. It has been exceptionally wet here this year too.

I have another one in the calving shed at the moment, need to go and check on her again shortly, I kept looking over at her during the ordeal thinking she was going to calf right then and there on me in the middle of it.  At least she is not a heifer, this will be her 4th calf and she milks heavy for a Jersey on just grass, her bag is way out there right now.

More progress on the shed.
The outside is done. I started on the inside and got started on setting up the equipment.

The shed is done and I got some blades sharpened. I  still need to tweak a few things but all in all I'm impressed. I was kinda expecting to have some trouble right off the bat but the blades cut very well. I am happy 8)

Playing catch up now. I took off between Christmas and New year's. I've got over 7000 feet of orders to fill. I got a good jump on it this week.

Here's part of it.

times like this a mini excavator with long reach would be great. Park it in one spot and stretch to reach everything. or enjoy the flotation of the tracks.

Either way I am sick of this mud. I really wish it would either dry up or freeze.

Only think that kept me from completely burying the tractor was the belly pan.

btw, shed looks great. I really need something like that. even if its just a place to park stuff to open up the rest of the shop.

Nice little blade shop.  Looks like you got the blade on the outside of the 3rd guide, it will keep going forever like that, no doubt you found out, if not better go check it :D :D :D

Not sure what you are referring to?
I had the magnet on and it stopped when it was supposed to.
I like having all that extra space now.

I thought  it looked like the blade was outside the vertical pin on the third guide, the guide on the right, rather than between the pin and the roller. Many times I've done this, the magnet catches on the pin. and the blade  keeps going round and round. 😹

My partner's new '81 644 Lull has been fun to use as well. I found some service info on the web here;
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B9-7bn5CX9NDUUt3YkJtQ1U0LWs (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B9-7bn5CX9NDUUt3YkJtQ1U0LWs)
I've got steering cylinder parts coming from Tiffin, we blew out the rear steering seals which made it fun to get into the shop and over the pit, the steering pressure drops to both cylinders. Next up is fixing the frame tilt. Once we can run the pumps I'll remove the rod end hose and see if the packing is blown and if not I suspect trash or a failure in the counterbalance valve, never been inside one of those.

I have four different chainsaws and they are all different heights. So I came up with this idea. It is so nice to finally have a dedicated spot for sharpening. It only takes about five minutes or less to sharpen a 36" chain. I use the stihl 2 in 1 file. I have a grinder but will be selling it. The file is faster and better.

Been busy busy busy.
I started a job last week. The customer builds cradles for windmill blades.
He needs 8x12x8' and 2x12x8'
Each unit consists of one 8x12 and four 2x12. He needs 500 units. He says he is splitting the job between several Mills cause he needs it ASAP.
I'm waiting on logs right now. I cut 11 units the other day and ran out of big enough logs.

It sure does make a lot of side lumber :o

Nice!  Please take some video in the other direction - I'd be interested to see what is happening to the slabs and boards coming off the conveyors.  Are they going into an edger, auto stacker or staging area?

Very nice new setup, impressive.
As YH has asked, and if you can spare a bit of time to do it, a few more videos please. 👍

Nice setup! smiley_thumbsup
Only suggestion I'd make is make sure to have plenty of ventilation for the sawmill exhaust, maybe a fan to keep the airflow going.

Very nice. Is there a switch to tell it to dump a slab or move a flitch/board?

I will  get some more video from different angles
The flitches drop down to a staging conveyor.

As for the exhaust there is a 20' garage door behind me that creates a good cross wind but occasionally I get a faint wiff of exhaust. I plan to put a 4" exhaust hose to vent so I can close that door on cold days.

I have a control station for controlling the functions of the roll case.

Good to hear you're planning on ventilation. I spent many years working around trucks and machinery running and idling, always want plenty of fresh air.

PAmizerman, a daft question, wouldn't it be interesting to switch to all electric?
Title: Re: Just another day in Paradise

I switched my edger from diesel to electric.
I don't think I have enough power to run my mill on my current electric panel.
I can get three phase or another line run but the cost outweighs the benefits for me at this point.

Ok.
For my case, i went to a generator, since my saw was already electric. And i saw so little that having a 2000€ monthly contract didn't make sense.  I have the wires, but not the will to pay the electricity company that much. Those "yellow" contracts here in France are different, you pay so much monthly, whether you consume electricity or not. There is a fixed amount of electricity  included in it, and then, when you go over you have to pay per kw/h
At least 5 month of the year, i don't use it anyway, cos i'm running a chairlift.
But for a previous location i was looking at, i got quoted 30000€, for 200 yard of three phase 415v supply.
So i guess, i understand what you're saying.

That table is like a swiss army knife. It's the key to your layout for sure. Did you have it custom made or did you adapt an existing table?

I implemented the 2016 WM Boonville demo found in this thread (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=94550.40) and while it works well for 9 boards out of 10, there's always that one board that doesn't want to drag back onto the rollers or the side ways greenchain. And since I'm sawing from the opposite end, I have to walk around the mill to go babysit the thing.

Your layout keeps you close to the boards coming off the mill so you can deals with the uncooperative ones. Have you found other advantages or disadvantages?

thanks

I modified the roll case and added the slab dump and board stop.
There are definitely things that I need to modify with the setup. I'll get pictures and explain that next week.
Do you have any pictures or videos? I would like to see your setup.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTIhkpWDIMg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTIhkpWDIMg)

I replaced the conveyor with a single wide roller since taking the video. I'm using just regular #40 chain for the greenchain. The trick is to get the angle of approach of the board just right combined with having the chain at a 30 degrees angle away from the board in a channel.

The green chain just dumps on a pallet for now but I can saw for a little while before I have to deal with stacking and edging. I have a long conveyor waiting for me to be installed that will bring the boards back towards me off the green chain. However, I'm not sold on the layout for the reasons I outlined above.

I really like the layout of your mill's support equipment.

Sorry they are a little shaky. I'm having a hard time finding places to mount a camera. With all the different machines running there's a lot of vibrations.

Here is the finished lumber.
This is one of the things I need to modify.
The belt conveyor is too long. There is only 16 ft from the end of the conveyor to the wall. After I shorten the belt conveyor the lumber will drop straight onto the green chain.

might add an unscrambler into the mix here to make it easier. And a chain to load onto the edger(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/47229/PXL_20221124_001345415_MP.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1669861346)

One thing that is harder for me is edging.
At my old site I stacked all my boards by hand so all my flitches went into a pile.
I would sort them as they came off the mill.
So for anything over 14' I cut into two boards before going through the edger.
I would stack full length flitches in one pile and shorts in another.

I would flush up the ends and just run a chainsaw through the whole pile. Now I cut each one individually. If I had an unscrambler that would fix that problem.

One thing I don't like is that I have to stop sawing and edge when too much piles up.
Previously I would just move piles of flitches out of my way and keep sawing.

At the old site I brought piles over and could get directly behind the edger to feed straight into it.

Coming along nicely.  One thing that jumped out at me are those uncovered chains on the live rollers.  Look at how close your jacket comes to them when you move the flitch over.  Not trying to be the safety police but I had to help remove a guy who got caught in the rollers on a Rosser head debarker.  He was still alive and conscious, until we removed the bolts holding the bearings, everyone knew what was going to happen.  That was 20 or so years ago, still see it like it was yesterday, you don't want to be there.

I think it is the inevitable problem of the one man sawmill. Eventually, you have to stop doing what you are doing and go do something else. I have a surge area where my green chain dumps everything coming off the mill's dragback. Eventually, it fills up and I have to stop sawing and go sort through the pile. Even with an unscrambler and better pre-sorting with a flip up table for the slab edgings, I would still need a surge table one way or another.

The limit switch right after the edger conveyor is brilliant. I have mine about 7 feet away on the outfeed table with a timer relay set to 5 seconds. However, if a board doesn't make it all the way through, I have to run to it before the table it flips up. I will be copying your design in the near future.

All my set up is 12v motors but I'm reaching a point where the cheapness of the motors is outweighed by their limitations and the wiring complexity. Are you satisfied with your layout and use of pneumatics vs hydraulics?

Is that outfeed table a Wood-Mizer thing or is it custom built?
Title: Re: Just another day in Paradise
Post by: PAmizerman on January 20, 2023, 06:32:08 PM
The tailing chain is an industrial WM product.
The switch on the dump table is fully pneumatic.
No electric involved with it.

Yes I much prefer pneumatics over hydraulic. Air is cheaper than oil🤣

The only disadvantage of air for me is that it has the possibility to freeze up from condensation in the compressor. There are remedies for that though.

I will be changing out my green chain for another roll case with some creative add ons. I don't like the way it is now.

How is the lumber stacker working out?

Do you have trouble getting rid of your sawdust? I saturated all my neighbours a long time ago and never really got any bites on facebook market place. I don't charge for it as long as people load it themselves. I resorted to building mount sawdust in a out of place spot on the property.

I drove 13 miles to this site (2 Miles from the John Henry Park) and found logs pretty scattered but they had a tractor there and did a pretty good job with the off-bearing and keeping logs coming. The logs were at their camp and they had driven 100 miles to come down.

The 2 brothers were a few years younger than me and were a real pleasure to saw for. They said they had used a sawyer up near Charleston WV and when they asked him to saw 5/4 lumber he told them he was a sawyer not a mathematician. They said he had a WM LT40 but it sounded like a manual mill. That shocked me and they seemed surprised when I sawed  everything they asked (5/4, 4/4, 6X6's, 3X6's, 2X6's, etc.) It really was nothing unusual IMHO.

At the end of the day they brought up this 5' cedar 3 pronged stump and I whittled it down to cut him some 23" wide bookmatched with 1 live edge. He will have to use a lot of epoxy because of the hollow spots but they seemed happy with them. I did not get any finished pictures as they moved the wood to another site as we cut it and it was dark when we finished.

We cut 1867 bf today. They had more trees but only one helper available tomorrow and several more trees to cut down so they asked if I could come back and if I worked weekends. Sure. No problem. I like these 1 day jobs close to home.

Ooops! Meant to put this in Whatcha sawing.
