This book has just become available and it's a pretty good field guide for both the beginner and expert.  Would be good for classrooms, too. It's filled with keys, tools, descriptions, images, and more.

NRAES Offers New Book on "The Woods in Your Backyard"

Virginia's Natural Resource Agricultures and Engineering Service has announced the publication of The Woods in Your Backyard, a book that promotes the stewardship of small parcels of land for the personal enjoyment of the owners and improved environmental quality for society. It is written for owners of 1-10 acres of forested land as well as owners who are interested in turning grassy or lawn-areas into forest. The first four parts (Introduction, Inventory Your Property, Ecological Principles, and Put Your Knowledge into Practice) describe concepts necessary to fulfill land management goals for your property. Part five is a workbook with blank activity sheets designed to apply the lessons in parts I-IV to your own land.

For more information, or to order a copy, visit the NRAES website.

Timber Industry Publication

Our own MDNRE Anthony Weatherspoon has co-authored a USFS bulletin titled "Michigan Timber Industry: An Assessment of Timber Product Output and Use." Take a peek for yourself: http://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/rb/rb_nrs42.pdf.  71 pages.

Abstract
Presents recent Michigan forest industry trends; production and receipts of industrial roundwood; and production of saw logs, veneer logs, pulpwood, and other products in 2006.  Logging residue generated from timber harvest operations is reported, as well as wood and bark residue generated at primary wood-using mills and disposition of mill residues.

National Walk in the Woods Day

Save this date -- Saturday, May 21st! 2011 is the International Year of the Forests and AFF is helping to spread the word about the many benefits our forests provide and encourage people to get out there and see the land. Saturday, May 21 is National Walk in the Woods Day, and we invite you to help others discover a forest and learn about its importance by participating in, or leading, a "walk in the woods" activity. Do you rarely spend time in your own woods because you are helping other landowners with theirs? May 21 would be a great time to get out and celebrate! Or maybe use this opportunity to talk to the landowners you work with about having their family out to their woodland.

Here are some ideas:

Take your own children, grandchildren, or family/friends/neighbors' children for a walk in the woods.  Conduct a fun, informal educational activity using Project Learning Tree's "Connecting Kids to Nature" activity series.
Invite a local youth club or after-school club for an outing to your Tree Farm, or a nearby woodland, city or state park, or a national forest.
Help a school improve its forest or plant trees on school grounds with students and teachers.

TIES TO THE LAND PROGRAM - FOR PRIVATE FOREST OWNERS

The Ties to the Land (TTL) program was developed out of Oregon State to address the issue of massive forest land ownership succession from the current generation to the next.   The trend is parcelization and subsequent fragmentation.  Maintaining both the forest ownerships and their families is the goal of this program.  It's been several times already in Michigan and the proposed 2011 schedule is below.

Foresters can help in three ways.
1.  Help host or promote a program.
2.  Help identify estate planners with experience in keeping forests and families intact.
3.  Receive training to hold one of these programs (it's not a hard thing to facilitate).

The national website is [ http://www.familybusinessonline.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51&Itemid=52 ].

Some of the contacts for the Michigan programs are:

The Michigan Chapter of the Association of Consulting Foresters (MACF) was recognized as the 2011 Chapter of the year this week at the National ACF Convention held in New Orleans, LA.  The award is given annually to the State chapter that displays the highest level of commitment to the promotion and practice of professional consulting forestry.  This year was unique as it is the first year that Stihl Chainsaws sponsored the $750 award.

Four MACF members made the journey deep into the hot/humid south.  While at the conference they promoted the State of Michigan and learned about what it takes to put on an event of this size and quality.  The 2012 National ACF Convention is to be held in Grand Rapids, MI next June, in which MACF is hosting.

Congratulations to all members of MACF!  You all deserved it!

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF FORESTS EVENT

As you are aware, the United Nations declared 2011 to be the International Year of Forests. In recognition of this, the Michigan State University Department of Forestry is co-hosting a two-day workshop, October 24-25 at the MSU Union, on sustainable forestry and economic development: http://www.for.msu.edu/goes/index.html.

Put this workshop on your calendar, register and attend!

For the workshop, there will be foresters from around the world (many are MSU Forestry alumni) and from Michigan who will address many facets of sustainability and development. You can sign up for the conference, lunch on Monday and Tuesday, and dinner on Monday evening...all at no cost to you. We need the formal registration so that the correct number of meals are ordered.

These sessions will provide opportunities for you to meet the speakers. Attend as much of the program as possible. If you sign up, we will have a name tag for you.

There is also a Sunday evening program organized by the Greater Lansing Area United Nations Association (cost ~$30).

If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact Larry Leefers (leefers@msu.edu; 517-333-8850).

USFS Firewood Workshop

Hi Folks Interested in Forestry, Sawmills and Firewood-

I wanted to inform you of the outreach effort on the part of the US Forest Service to support the growth of the firewood industry in the US.  The USFS is sponsoring an educational and networking one day workshop at the Wood Education and Resource Center in Princeton, West Virginia on Thursday, September 27th, 2012 that will discuss the firewood industry from the forest to the burning in wood stoves.

The firewood industry is growing but experiencing lots of challenges in trying to remain affordable while seeking new technologies that will allow for better burning and lower emissions.

This workshop is part of an outreach effort at the Wood Education and Resource Center that has hosted a series of forest and wood products workshops in 2011 and 2012.  Our project website is www.cnr.ncsu.edu/woodworkshops.  These workshops have focused on small sawmills and the value added products like cabinets, furniture, millwork and firewood.  Past workshops that include information about small sawmill businesses have the lecture slideshows and handouts as pdf downloads.  A related Local Wood Products Marketing project has additional information and recordings of wood products marketing webinars at www.cnr.ncsu.edu/usalocalwood.

You are invited to attend the Profitable Firewood Processing Workshop.  The cost is $35 per person and includes handouts and a buffet lunch.  The workshop brochure and registration form can be found at www.cnr.ncsu.edu/woodworkshops.  The WERC is located at 301 Hardwood Lane in Princeton, WV at Exit 14 on Interstate 77 just north of the VA/WV state line.  If you cannot attend, you can see the workshop slide shows and handouts after the workshop as they will be posted on the project website.

This workshop will take place one week ahead of the Paul Bunyan Show in Ohio where Sawmill Magazine hosts the Firewood Shootout where several firewood processors will compete on how fast and well they can process logs into split firewood.  Also being shown is a firewood dry kiln in operation that is fired with split firewood.  Information about the Paul Bunyan Show can be found at http://www.ohioforest.org/?page=pbsshowfacts.

This email is a one time announcement and please contact me if you need additional information.  Sawmill Magazine will run articles in the future on the topics discussed at the Firewood Workshop.

If you are involved in firewood please take one of the five surveys at www.cnr.ncsu.edu/woodworkshops.

Thank you,

RE:   NATURAL RESOURCE BUSINESS PROGRAM FOR FOREST OWNERS

Contact:  Dean Solomon, 231-582-6232, solomon@msu.edu

Natural resources businesses workshop to help landowners
GAYLORD, Mich. – Michigan landowners will learn about opportunities to start a natural resource business on their property during a workshop at the University Center in Gaylord on Saturday, August 24, 2013, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Natural resources businesses include activities such as small-scale maple syrup, mushroom production, trail riding, fee hunting and fishing, rural bed and breakfasts, wildlife viewing and more.

During the event, hosted by Michigan State University Extension, landowners will hear from Dr. Daryl Jones, coordinator of the Natural Resources Enterprises Program at Mississippi State University and a nationally-known expert on this topic. The workshop will also include presentations from landowners who have successfully started a small-scale natural resources business, and Michigan natural resources experts on how to get started.  An afternoon bus tour around the Gaylord area will feature a variety of natural resources businesses.

"There are many excellent options," says Dean Solomon, MSU Extension Senior Educator, "for landowners to use the forest, wildlife, open fields and water resources on their property for hobbies or to generate income."

The event is sponsored by Michigan State University Extension, Northeast Michigan Conservation Districts, Huron Pines, The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Forestry Assistance Program and Mississippi State University.

Solomon noted that although the workshop is designed primarily for landowners, anyone is welcome to attend.

Pre-registration is $35 per person ($55 after August 16).  The enrollment deadline is August 21. For questions or to register, visit www.events.anr.msu.edu/nrbusiness, or contact the MSU Charlevoix County Extension office at 231-582-6232.

RE:   TIMBER SALE TOUR FOR PNIF OWNERS

The FAP program and the Chippewa/Luce/Mackinac Conservation District will be hosting a presentation about timber harvesting to be followed by a tour of an active logging site on Saturday January 24th in Pickford.

The time and location are:
Saturday January 24th
10 AM to 2PM
Pickford Township Hall
115 East Main Street, Pickford
Departing to logging site from Pickford Hall, logging site: TBD
Boxed lunch included for those that RSVP

The general concept is to get landowners who are less familiar with the industry and less certain about logging more educated and comfortable with the idea.  If there are landowners that are familiar with logging it would be great to have them as well, to communicate their own experiences.

5-Day Lumber Grading Short Course Now Available in Michigan

The lack of certified lumber graders in Michigan has been a major concern for wood product manufacturers, as they cannot find the necessary skilled labor in the current labor pool. To help meet this skills gap, the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments (NEMCOG), Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium (MWNEMC), the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) are sponsoring two 5-day lumber grading short courses. The first is in Roscommon, August 31- Sept 4, and the second is in Hillman, September 21-25.

By bringing this training to Michigan, employers will be able to save on the expenses of sending employees to training elsewhere (lodging, meals and travel costs). This training will allow Michigan businesses to expand, remain stable, hire, and sustain workers. All sawmills, lumber yards and loggers in Michigan are welcome to have employees participate in the training, as well as individuals.

Founded in 1898 with the purpose of creating a uniform set of grading rules, the National Hardwood Lumber Association seeks to offer several opportunities both domestically and internationally for instruction of the basics of the NHLA grading system. The lumber grading short course plays a vital role in the industry benefitting anyone who has an impact on the buying or selling of hardwood lumber. These courses are perfect for salesmen, purchasing agents, sawyers, edger and trimmer operators, and yard managers.

Well-trained employees help provide a more carefully manufactured product, a more profitable yield from the log, and a better sense of the value of the lumber being handled. This 5-day workshop will include a thorough study and explanation of the NHLA Rules Book, emphasizing the basics of hardwood lumber inspection. This popular workshop gives yardmen, sawyers, edgermen, sales and office staff, and management level personnel an introduction to lumber inspection. Classes will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. EDT. The 5-day lumber grading short course runs $400/per person and includes registration fee, course materials, NHLA Rules Book, lunch and a Certificate of Completion.

As lumber grading is a high-demand occupation in northeast Michigan, some participants may be eligible to have the cost of the course covered. To learn more about financial aid, contact your local Michigan Works! office at 1-800-285-WORK.

For additional information on the course itself, contact Aleece Hodges at 989-705-3733 or email at ahodges@nemcog.org.

To register for the course, please visit http://www.nhla.com/calendar.

RE:  CHAINSAW WORKSHOP

The Mason-Lake Conservation District, Manistee Conservation District, and the Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) will be hosting a chainsaw safety workshop in Ludington on Saturday, 12 March.  The workshop will be taught by Chuck Oslund, retired firefighter and surveyor for the U.S. Forest Service.  Chuck has more than 25 years of professional chainsaw experience so therefore has much knowledge to share!  The workshop will be from 8:00 to ~5:00, which includes a 1/2 hour lunch.  We will meet at the Pere Marquette Township Hall in Ludington at 8:00am, where there will be several hours of discussion and presentation by Chuck pertaining to important safety considerations when operating a chainsaw.  After the presentations and lunch, we will travel to a nearby property managed by Mason-Lake Conservation District, where Chuck will demonstrate how to properly take down a tree with a chainsaw.  You will not take down your own tree during this one day workshop, but you will learn a great deal of valuable information that you can take home with you when operating your own chainsaw.  You may attend the indoor component, the outdoor component, or both!  If you attend the outdoor component, please bring your own hard hat and safety glasses.

THIS WORKSHOP IS FREE, INCLUDING THE LUNCH.  PLEASE RSVP BEFORE FEBRUARY 26TH, 2016, AS SPACE WILL BE LIMITED.  To register, please contact Dani McGarry at the Mason-Lake Conservation District (Office Phone 231-757-3708; Email dani.mcgarry@macd.org), or Josh Shields, FAP Forester with Manistee and Mason-Lake Conservation Districts (Mobile Phone 989-220-9236; Email joshua.shields@macd.org).

RE:  FOREST STEWARDS GUILD NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Forest Stewards Guild – National Conference
13-15 July
Duluth, Minnesota

From July 13th - 15th, the Forest Stewards Guild conference we'll be in Duluth, Minnesota. The Lake Superior region is a  perfect location for Guild members and fellow professionals from throughout the United States and Canada to gather, learn and strengthen the bonds among all of us working for healthy forests.   You're invited to join us.   CEU's will be available for this meeting.

The Forest Stewards Guild is a unique organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forestry through research, education, and professional practice.  "Guild" members include academics, researchers, policy experts, and practicing professionals in a variety of disciplines who all share a mission of protecting our forested landscapes, and "Putting the Forest First".  Guild events mix quality learning with outdoor experience and great personal connections.  They're always a good time, and they're open to everyone.

The Guild's 2016 National Meeting is an opportunity to explore sustainable forestry in practice, set amid rugged beauty of America's "Third Coast".  Our program this year is bringing together foresters, conservationists, and land restoration professionals to explore how different organizations and disciplines work together to maintain healthy forested landscapes.  There is no better place than the Lake Superior country to showcase that kind of partner-driven work.

Kiln Dying Time Again

If you've been meaning to go to, or send employees to, a hardwood kiln-drying short course, you have that opportunity once again. For the sixteenth consecutive year, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry is holding its annual kiln drying workshop again next month. If you're drying hardwoods, or thinking of drying hardwoods. don't invest another dime until you've spent some time with Dr. Bill Smith and his team in Syracuse.

Friday Sep 22 will be educational sessions at the Tawas Bay Beach Resort and Saturday Sep 23 will be a bus tour of three nearby certified Tree Farms.  You can register by returning the attached form and a check payable to the Michigan Forest Association or you can also pay online with a credit card at www.MichiganForests.org.  Registration fees increase after Sept 1 so please register soon.

This meeting will be a great place to meet other landowners who also love their forests, and the Michigan Tree Farm System is excited to partner with the Michigan Forest Association to host this meeting.  I hope to meet many of you at the meeting in Tawas next month.

RE:  MSAF FALL CONFERENCE

Registration is now open for the MI SAF fall meeting in Grayling on October 11-12, 2018.  The focus of the meeting is "Industry Foresters and the Forest Products Industry."  We will be hearing from a dozen industry foresters or mill managers in the Lower Peninsula about how they procure wood, what products they produce and a bit about their markets.  It should be a very interesting meeting and we hope to see you there.

A few items to note about this meeting:

We will meet on Thursday at the Kirtland Community College on Four Mile Road & I-75 just south of Grayling.  This is a great facility and they are even expanding to offer skilled trades training for the forest products industry.

Obstacles Impacting the Forestry Profession

10-11 October (Thursday & Friday)

SAVE THE DATE!!

Each year, the practice of forestry changes and becomes more complicated.  Just when you think you have it figured out, the rules change.  The Michigan Society of American Foresters (SAF) conference will be held at the Quality Inn and Conference Center located in Escanaba.  We will have a slate of guest speakers focusing on issues that make practicing forestry challenging.  The next morning, we will have a variety of local mill/woods tours.  Watch your inbox for the meeting details and a registration packet!

Registration is now open for the Michigan SAF meeting in Grayling on April 16-17, 2020.  This meeting should be a lot of fun with 175-200 foresters and friends coming together for networking, getting better at our profession and enhancing our service to society.

Here is Mike Smalligan's first top ten list of reasons why you should come.

1.     Diverse lineup of informative speakers covering forest health and management responses

2.     Kirtland Community College on 4 Mile Road is a great facility for a meeting

3.     Student research poster contest with free registration for participating students and a $100 cash prize for the best poster

4.     Advocate for forestry issues with invited policy makers.  Contact Larry Leefers at leefers@msu.edu if you are interested in policy issues.

5.     Half barrels of Bell's Two Hearted and Founders Solid Gold at Happy Hour (forests provide clean water which makes great Michigan beer)

6.     Sponsors can contribute in-kind donations of valuable items for the Thursday evening raffle (so bring extra cash to support MI SAF)

7.     YOU can donate your favorite venison products (jerky, summer sausage, meat sticks, etc) for SAF's first ever MEAT RAFFLE.  Seriously, it's a real thing www.npr.org/2019/11/22/781649415/meat-raffles-arent-just-about-the-meat-in-this-new-york-community (https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.npr.org/2019/11/22/781649415/meat-raffles-arent-just-about-the-meat-in-this-new-york-community__;!!HXCxUKc!nQmx9YRrEd1B25JthsyLB9m71p1qCv53EP3pMCkDV7rklQXiEoqf9qYDjutz5g$) and we need to do our part as foresters by eating more herbivores.

8.     Three interesting and very different tours to choose from on Friday morning – forest health near Hartwick Pines, DNR's new timber cruise by Waters, or mill tours on 4 Mile Road

9.     Earn 3 to 9 CFEs if you need credits for the Registered Forester, Certified Forester, or SFI programs

10. Brenda Haskill and Tara Bal are hosting a Women in Natural Resources gathering on Thursday 16 April from 7:30 to 8:30 am at "Coffee by Steph" at 223 E Michigan Ave in Grayling.  Women from all areas of natural resources are welcome to gather for free coffee or tea and valuable conversation.  Please RSVP to Brenda Haskill at haskillb@michigan.gov or text/call 989-370-9557.

Please return the attached fillable pdf registration form to me if you are paying by check in the mail or if you are paying online with a credit card at https://squareup.com/store/society-of-american-foresters/ (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/squareup.com/store/society-of-american-foresters/__;!!HXCxUKc!nQmx9YRrEd1B25JthsyLB9m71p1qCv53EP3pMCkDV7rklQXiEoqf9qYjc1s-8A$)

Please forward this invitation to your colleagues and those whose emails have changed in the last 4 years.  Everyone is welcome at SAF meetings, not just foresters or current members.

We look forward to seeing you in Grayling!

Thanks,

Mike

Hey all:

Please join us for a forest pest and disease information session!

Date and Location:
Monday, March 9th, 2020
6pm - 8pm
Pleasant Plains Township Hall
7333 S M-37
Baldwin, MI  49304

This 2-hour presentation, given by the Manistee and Mason-Lake Conservation Districts, Forestry Assistance Program (FAP), and Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is designed for landowners AND professionals such as foresters, ecologists, and loggers, interested in pests and diseases that are relevant to the forests of Northwestern Lower Peninsula Michigan.  Both native and non-native invasive pests and diseases will be discussed by Josh Shields, FAP Forester with the Manistee and Mason-Lake Conservation Districts, and Cheryl Nelson, Michigan DNR Forester with the Forest Health Response Team.  Josh Shields and Cheryl Nelson will also discuss the importance of combatting non-native invasive organisms.  They will also explain the importance of understanding how non-native invasive organisms are different than ecologically important native organisms that are often labelled as aggressive pests or diseases.  This is a great presentation to attend to stay informed about the organisms impacting your forests!

The following types of organisms will be discussed:

• Non-native invasive insects such as Asian longhorned beetle, beech scale, emerald ash borer, gypsy moth, hemlock woolly adelgid, and spotted lanternfly
• Non-native invasive fungi such as oak wilt
• Non-native invasive plants such as autumn olive and garlic mustard
• Native pests and diseases such as eastern tent caterpillar, forest tent caterpillar, Heterobasidion root disease, lecanium scale, oak decline, red pine pocket decline, spruce decline, and white-tailed deer

This event has been approved for 2 Category 1 Society of American Foresters continuing education credits and Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) Phase 1 education credit.

There is no cost for attending this event.  Snacks will be provided free of charge.  A suggested minimum donation of $10/person is requested at the door to help offset costs of the event.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS TUESDAY, MARCH 3rd, 2020.  For more information or to register, contact Josh Shields at 231-889-9666 or joshua.shields@macd.org.

The Fall Schedule of New York Logger training is posted now. Of note is that there is one virtual class in Silviculture for those who can't make the drive. A little short on the GOL classes this time around, but they have some other new classes on contracts and other things of interest and value for the logging community.
The Current listing can be found HERE. (https://files.constantcontact.com/82650562101/a025436c-e8ef-4b79-aff1-90b084418fd8.pdf)

Title: WSU Forest Stewardship Coached Planning Course
Post by: Maximus on January 15, 2024, 11:40:07 AM
My wife and I just completed the WSU Extension "Forest Stewardship Coached Planning Course".  These are conducted regionally (in WA) a couple times a year.  This course and much more can be found here, https://forestry.wsu.edu/.

The guy who runs the courses, WSU Prof. Kevin Zobrist, does a truly exceptional job conveying information.  He really knows how to educate.  Soils and forest health, harvesting, critters, invasives...  Lots of good stuff.

The structure is focused around writing your own small forest management program, but not in some sort of "fill-in-the-blanks" kind of way.  He wants you to understand, appreciate, and enjoy forest management.

I highly recommend the course.  One evening a week for about 8 weeks, plus a field trip.  $150, if memory serves.

Maximus -  That sounds like a fascinating course.

Even is someone did not want to write their own forest management plan, it would certainly allow then to have a more intelligent/informed conversation with their forester to end up with a plan that really meets their needs and goals.

I attended one of the WLUDLG Courses in August 2023 and found it very informative and helpful.  It was free.  Just needed to register quickly enough, because the courses do fill up fast!  The certificate you get on completion is valid for 5 years.  Currently the 2 courses in April 2024 are full and there's only 1 spot left for the May 15th course, according to the UWSP website used to sign-up. - https://www.uwsp.edu/wfc/wisconsin-forestry-center/wisconsin-local-use-dimension-lumber-grading/
