Suggest hydraulics. You can use a power steering pump, belt drive off your engine I did this and have had zero issues with it. A flow control gives you infinite control over speed which you need IMO. My gallery has some pics of what I did might give some ideas. Suggest use chain,

I just got a 1/2 hp dc motor and a dc motor controller from work. Where do I attach the cable to the carriage? Does it matter?
