Title: Official 2019 16th annual PiGROAST RSVP topic.
Post by: Jeff on June 03, 2019, 03:41:13 PM
16th Annual Forestry Forum Pig Roast August 2 & 3rd, 2019!
Tomorrow we order the pig and the port-a-potties (MEN'S and LADY'S!) so that means it is time to start getting a count for the pigroast. :)

Once again, I'd like to take a moment and encourage, that this year, if you have been meaning to come, but keep telling yourself " I'll make it next year", Make it this year! No one knows what the future holds, and as I get deeper in this life, I'm beginning to get a fuller understanding of that. We should grasp each moment like it is the last and celebrate it!  Now, on to the details!

Remember this is a family event. We have a pool for the kids and when we know there is going to be a group, we plan activities to include them. So, if ya got em, BRING EM!  :D

You are not required to rsvp to attend, but we sure would appreciate it if you think there is a good chance you are coming to add your number of attendees to our count. This gives us a good idea on what to expect and also gives incentive to others to come. You can always retract if you need to, but you won't  ;) :).

Area Motels (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+lodging&hl=en&ll=43.995778,-84.92981&spn=0.51866,1.344452&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=lodging&hnear=Harrison,+Clare,+Michigan&t=m&fll=43.995778,-84.92981&fspn=0.51866,1.344452&z=10)

Area Camping (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+camping&hl=en&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=camping&hnear=Harrison,+Michigan+48625&t=m&z=11)

I strongly recommend getting opinions on hotels or motels in the area from us or other members that have come to the pigroast. There are a handful that turn up on those google maps that we will strongly advise against. There are plenty of very good places to stay.

ITINERARY:
Friday, August 2, Set up day, visiting, pig prep, boiled dinner for supper! Bon fire. Swimming, more visiting
Saturday, August 3, Pancakes and sausage breakfast at 8 a.m., Pig around noonish, followed by door prizes and visiting.

Please continue the count in your post. :)

Fat Olde Elf makes 33. I think this is  Number 16 which means I have been at 15 of these gatherings. My other Michigan contacts always ask me if I'm planning on attending the Pig Roast. So by now you would think they would know I'm serious about the Pig Roast.  I am serious as octogenarian can get .  12 days until 82.......Be glad to see everyone..

Brent and Jill from DblTreeBelgian Farm make #34&35.
Last year we stay at Hidden Hills campgrounds and its a very nice place to stay. This year we decided not to camp so we are looking for recommendations from the members on a nice hotel or resort to kick back for a couple nights.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Brent

If I see suggestions, I can let you know if I have negative info.   Maybe try the Carriage house Inn. It is probably full, but you never know. It's a B&B  Great views of the lake and you could probably hear me do a burnout with the mustang from there. :D

Not sure what you are up for on time, but the Mackinac Bridge in just two hours from here.  Lots of historical stuff there plus lots of shopping if the Mrs. likes to do that.  Forts, old mill creek and its water powered sawmill. Plus, it is beautiful up there.

Pat and I have always spent several days before and/or after the Pig Roast to explore and enjoy the treasures in Michigan.

Birch Run is a huge Outlet Mall on I75 and is also the home of Tony's (the Bacon place).  East from Birch Run and then North on Hwy 83, ¼ mile on the left is a very nice RV campground.  North of the campground a few miles is Frankenmuth.  (a must see)

On the West side is Holland, yup, it even has a windmill.  Very nice and also has a nice campground.  North from Holland is the Sand Dunes, light houses, and Traverse City.

Jeff mentioned Mackinac Bridge, but there is also Mackinaw City (very good place to eat a Pastie) and also catch a boat to Mackinac Island.  East from there is the water driven sawmill.

The East side (Sunrise Coast) is also a nice place to visit but only after seeing the above.

We try not to tell too many people how nice it is up here.  Petoskey, Harbor Springs are good places to visit.  The drive up or down M119 between Harbor Springs and Cross Village is taken for granted by those of us who live here.  Leggs Inn in Cross Village is a must see.  The food's good too.
We're not going to make the PR this year.  The estate auction of a local old farmer, tractor collector, character is that Saturday.  These auctions are becoming rare and this one in particular is a must attend for me.

I suspect a week from now we will have had our first member sightings. This is also about the time i check my weather app 6 times a day. There is a load of pigroast supplies just over my left shoulder as i tap this out. Tammy and her mom are off on another shopping trip. We break our trips up into type of supplies. The pig is the last supply trip, and that culminates here at 4 oclock next Friday where we put him up in his special spa.

A couple pics as I  sit and take a break. The view of the yard, my dog, fox news and a light breeze from the west.

We've even had birthday parties in the midst of a pigroast. Haven't we @pineywoods (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=4000)  :)

Next year the pig roast will fall on Tammy and my 40th wedding anniversary.

Yep, and a nice one it was. Tammy discovered my wife's birthday fell during the pig roast and arranged an imprompto party complete with custom made cake. Wife got her wheel chair stuck in the loose gravel around the birthday cake table, we had to lift her, chair and all away from the table, but only after she blew out the candles. I think 2013 was the year. Not likely we will ever be able to come again, but that once will always be a favorite memory. Thanks Tammy

Our great lakes can make things difficult forcasting. Our local news covers from us up into the u.p. it can, and most times is, a completely different forcast. When they say chance north, odds are thats not us  i suspect there will be changes before we get there.

I took friday off, so friday will be my travel day. If I go through canada Google says 7.5 hours. otherwise through US is 9 hours.

So depending on when I leave friday I may make it in time to stop by. Hoping to be on the road by 10:00 So that will get me there around 6. This also depends on if I find a really good place to eat a good lunch.

Last time I went to silver lake sand dunes the border crossing into michigan was actually really smooth and the guy I dealt with was nice. Hopefully I will have the same experience this time. I can't imagine I would lose 2 hours in canada.

Besides. if I stay in the US its I-90 all the way. So I would be going through chicago and paying tolls all the way.

I would rather not do either.

What time is supper? I can't say no to good food :)

Made it safe and sound.  Got to meet Tammy and her mom.  Georgia loves their home.  nice and rustic.  William got to play with the "bear" dog Harley!  Monique was able to establish that she does not eat polish sausage.  she is a picky eater an always has some anxiety that she will offend someone not eating the food.  Our trip was eventful and going home we will avoid towns with the word rapids in the name.  In Grand Rapids our phone tried to get us to  leave the highway and go onto Ann street but then back on 131 north.  ignored cause that made no sense.  Turns out there was a 6 car pileup under an over pass, and we came up on miles of stopped cars at 70 MPH.  Slid tires to get stopped and woke the whole family.  In big rapids I left my wife to get fuel (I had to go potty) and when I came out a guy had more fuel points than he could use, so we got 20 dollars in free fuel.  We think it may have been the shorts she was traveling in!!!  :) Then when I tried to use my card to top off the tank, we had trouble and called the attendant.  finally got it to work and my family was inside.  We are used to using the card and then going.  so we got 15 miles north when I recalled that they may have turned it on for us to pay inside.  My wife said she did not pay inside.  looked up the bill and had 2 charges for 1 dollar.  called the station and the lady was nice but was just ding the paperwork on stolen gas!  Her system would not let her punch in the number.  so we lost another 30 minutes going back to pay for the fuel!  That which does not kill us makes us stronger!  As I started, we made it safe and sound and looking forward to meeting everyone and seeing a few folks again 8).  everyone travel safe!!!

Crusarius, avoid the border. The last PR I attended I lost two hours just on the buffalo crossing. Michigan was better but my trip was 11 hours both ways. I'll stay in the states next time. Or travel at night. The crossings are always faster at night, at least it seams that way.

We stopped at several grits free restaurants since we left home.  That's ok.  I can eat taters too.   However, Illinois and Wisconsin ought to be the grits capital of the world with fields and fields of  lush corn.  JMO

The pigroast was great as usual, the food was spectacular.  I bought a dozen or so raspberries and 1 blackberry from my garden, I have to hand water my garden every day, no water or power on my property yet.  By the time I drive over every day and take care of the garden, I figure those raspberries are REALLY expensive  I gave them to Gerald Bouchard and his wife Mike, I was explaining to Gerald how "precious" these berries were to me and when I looked over at his wife, they were all gone :D  Gerald never got a taste, and Mike said they were really good raspberries.  I really enjoy the whole "theme" of Jeff and Tammy's pigroast, another great day.  Thanks, Jeff and Tammy.

Well we made it home in one piece, safe and sound.  Sorry to leave early but we got 6 hours into our 14 hour trip sat, and home just after 4 today.  I can rest a day before a night [I have typed a profane word that is automatically changed by the forum censored words program I should know better] Monday night.  Pizza for dinner.  Had a great time and I know I missed some on my departure.  I know Georgia and I will be back net year.  Georgia felt welcome with all the ladies getting her on the female forestry forum, and making her feel welcome.  My kids Monique and William had a good time but not quite their thing since they leave for college in a week or two.  Monique is so excited that she represented the family well at the major competition.  She has asked me several times what we will do with our Leg-rite legs she won.  I am so glad that the grand prize went to a good home.  I would have never used it. Jeff and Tammy, thanks for all the hard work, and opening your beautiful home to us all.
add.  it was supposed to be shift, I must of left out the f.  :D

you are welcome.  I still struggle putting handles with real names and faces, not to mention winter vs summer hair!  I struggled to finish all things prior to leaving for the PR.  I had 2 days of advanced trama life support the fri and sat before we left on sunday.  I have a thread on laser engraving, and I toss them in here and there.  here is a wedding board that people will sign, and a ring carrier before I bored the ring slots in, and a cup to hold sequins for the flower girl.  this is for a wedding for one of my Dr. friends and her carpenter husband.  you can see their day is fast approaching.  I wish I had time to of made a plaque or tile for Jeff and Tammy prior to leaving.

Nancy and I thoroughly enjoyed the Pig Roast.  Thanks to Jeff and Tammy for making it happen and hosting it.  Thanks to sponsors for the prizes.  Thanks to everyone that took time off to travel and attend.  For us, it has been five years since we last attended.  The PR was the high light of our 14 day trip.  Glad to be home.  Got a lot of grass to mow!

This was my very first FF Pig Roast and I enjoyed it all.  Good fellowship, Great food, and prizes to boot.  It was worth the 1750 mile round trip from Alabama to Harrison, MI.

I would also like to thank all the FF sponsors who provided support or door prizes.

Jeff constructed a "Plinko" like game, where each contestant was given 3 cedar disks to roll on edge down a ramp. These went across concrete, and into wooden slots marked with + and - numbers, the total of the three giving the score. Hats, key chains, pencils, backpacks, flash lights, toy chainsaws, ceramics, band saw blades, and a Log -Rite log lifter were among the prizes. The grand prize was a Stihl backpack style leaf blower. I would rough guess 75 - 100 total on Saturday, including Jeff's family, friends, and neighbors. The only cabbage I heard mention of was in the boiled dinner. There was a "surprise guest" who appeared during the Plinko game, hopefully someone got a picture! :D

Thanks to all that a part in making this year's pigroast a great time!   I'm just getting back after having left with Steve Beecraft Sunday afternoon to go to the cabin for a few like in the olden days!  Had a great time. We picked almost everything up that was in the yard before we left. Always lots of help when we need it. :)   Now its time to catch back up and convert the pig roast central pole barn back to being just a garage and pole barn and shop. :)  The yard was surprisingly long after having such a workout just 3-4 days before. Harley missed me. Tammy did too. :)

I also have to now dig up my well. >:(

THe pump kicks on every few minutes for a few seconds when there is no call for water. Very low pressure until the pump kicks on, then it is normal. The sprinkler system is designed to take enough water to keep the pump running, so that is the only time we get good pressure to take a shower. Otherwise, it is bad, then good, then bad, then good.

This is a pvc well. Buried bladder tank which I feel is probably the issue plus there must be a leak due to the pump kicking on when there is no water call.

Post by: Mike W on August 07, 2019, 09:40:03 PM
Little or no water pressure until the pump engages is most likely the failed bladder in your pressure tank, by the sounds of your issue, might be one in the same.  a hole in the pressure tank with failed bladder will give you those symptoms, pressure with the pump running and little to no pressure with it in static mode.  Most we have worked on with that issue was an internal failure to the bladder unable to apply pressure to the system without the pump running (no air retention in the bladder) with the short cycling of the pump it could be a combination of failed bladder and hole in the steel casing of the pressure tank.  One common issue we find regularly in this area is the pitless fails where the PVC or other type of piping passes through the casing of the well through to the down pipe via electrolysis burns a hole in the pipe and causes the short cycling of the pump as a leak, which could also give the symptoms of the low pressure until pump engages as usually there is not a check valve between the well head and pressure tank on most systems I have encountered.  Short cycling a submerged pump is the worst on wear and tear on the impellers and pump, running continuously is a lot less harsh then short cycling for sure. Not knowing your exact situation of well setup may prove I just shot into the dark, just we do deal with a lot of well issues in our area and the most common effects or reasoning behind them being my post herein, whatever your situation, best of luck in an expedient resolve, water issues are at the top of the list of annoyances for sure.  The pig roast looked to be a blast, time constraints left us out, we are hoping to change that in our lifestyle and hope they are still ongoing when we do figure that all out.  Hope your water issues are short lived and an easy resolve.  Mike

A week ago right now a dignified group of sawyers finally called it a day including Jeff, Chet, WDH, Stan from Coldwater,Fat Old Elf and 4 or 5 others. What a load of talent in one spot. I had no idea that WDH was an accomplished bass player.

Quite a few first timers this year and that is encouraging for the future. So many people get my personal and profound thanks for a great time.  Glad to see Glassman to add to the list of "man" members including Pig Man, Cedarman (3 generations)
and Magic Man who is touring with his wife Pat in Alaska. Also glad to meet so many new ladies supporting their spouses addiction to making sawdust. Dr. William Glasser wrote a great book about us "Positive Addictions" He wrote an earlier book
"Reality Therapy" which I admire.

I put over 1700 miles on my Tacoma Toy truck with no problems except the gas prices in Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
No reason to whine as my sainted wife Bonnie paid for the gas and 5 nights in 4 star motels. She says that's a small price to pay for 6 days and 5 nights of peace and solitude after 58 YEARS of marriage. Good girl.

Thanks again for my huge first aid kit. Bonnie also says thanks as she always patches me up. I got beat out by the nice young man that won the Stihl blower Great stuff ! Looking forward to next year.  My 65th high school reunion is next year. Only 28 of 48 of us left but I will lobby to have the reunion on the first SUNDAY in August 2020.  Keep the Faith..
