Stihl 042 Bar Length

Whats the max length bar I can use on a Stihl 042 with a ripping chain for quartering logs?
Timberking B-20   Retired and enjoying every minute of it.
Former occupations Electrical Lineman, Airline Pilot, Owner operator of Machine Shop, Slot Machine Technician and Sawmill Operator.
I know its a long story!!!

042=68cc, so a 24" setup is about all that can be reasonably expected to work well.  I think that 20" might be a more reasonable maximum if you are in any sort of a hurry.

my recomendation would be a 20" bar and for some exeptions and shortly use a 24".

I use a 28" on my 066 with a 36" GB mill, and thats about all that saw wants in Ash and White Oak. I also used a 20" to mill some siding in White Ash, and even that took a long time, taking 13" wide pieces of siding, 8' long.
