Had a custom home builder who I've trimmed a few house for before, contact me about milling some old barn beam. They are ornamental only and he needed a flat surface to go tight against the ceiling. He said he had trouble finding someone who could cut over 20' long. Interestingly they came all the way from Canada, so I don't know if they're easier to come by up there or if he just has connections up there? All I know is that they're a long way from home.
They were roughly a 10x10 and I cut the top down to 9". Was able to get them all planed out for the most part but a couple places I barely skimmed them. Spent an hour denailing and got almost all of them except one beam had a ton of really small ones. He said he was paying for a new blade so I just went through them and it still cut straight. Not sure what kind of wood it was but it didn't seem too hard.

Have any of you guys built box beams out of the caps of something like this? I got some that range from 3/4" to 1 1/2" thick. They look really cool with the hand hewn look and I'm trying to figure out a way to utilize them!

Oh you betcha. Two pics taken this morning of a pair of mantles leaving here tomorrow. The next one is right behind these two.We are running the same mill----good job ! Save all of your scraps and end pieces as they will sell later on down the line.
