I have a client with 7" to 8" wide reclaimed timbers and 10" to 16" tall and would like me to make a Dovetail barn for them. I have never done a compound Dovetail timber corner before and I need to understand the math that goes in to it
Thank you

I can't help with with that, but welcome to the Forum! I'm sure someone with experience will be along shortly.

What's a dovetail barn?  I have seen dovetails used in timber frame buildings, but I've never seen one that would be defined as a dovetail building.  Just curious.

Mike: I hear these are nice for sake of efficiency.  :)

My copy seems to have flown the coop. Get a copy of B.A. Mackie's "Notches of All Kinds" for a good description of layout.

Both surfaces of the dove tail need to shed water:

You see the top one (on the right) sheds water and the bottom one (on the left) also sheds water.
You need to cut both to shed water out.

Good luck.

Whatever you do, have fun doing it!

Those pages from Mackie should be in my email tomorrow, PM me your email if you want those and I'll forward them on.
