Title: THE GOAT DID IT! A brand spanking NEW WOODMIZER!
Post by: POSTON WIDEHEAD on January 02, 2018, 06:48:27 PM
I pulled the trigger today and ordered a Brand New LT40HDD35.9 W I D E Head 2018 model.

Ordered if from Joe Whitley at WM Albemarle, N.C.

It is projected to be ready in 4 weeks.

I got the wide head and ordered the 35.9 hp Diesel engine.
I will be running the 7 degree turbo blades....they will be a longer blade due to the wide head.

I ordered the simple set....I prefer this over accuset.

Lube mizer, HP Blade guides and 4 side supports.

I'll have 2 mills for a while and maybe put my first mill up for sale or run 2 mills to see how it goes.
I'll wait and see. Maybe 1 mill for quick portable jobs that pay very well in my area.

But I'm excited! Can't wait to see how the Turbo 7's saw with that diesel engine.

I'll post pictures when I go to pick it up.  8).............Go ORANGE!

The option that I curiously did not see was a Debarker which also depends upon the majority of your market.  ???  Mostly clean logs, OK.  For me it would be a blade killer.   :-\

Of course I also would have ordered an 'Operator's Seat".   :D

Mr. Poston Sir:
Was the ordering of a new mill the result of having suffered a temporary brain freeze?
I hear you folks have had some cooler than normal weather.
The forecast here for the next few days is snow, cooling temperatures and up to 60 mph winds.
Sounds like feed the wood stove and hibernate weather to me.

Easier to get an option with a piece of euipment when you order it. I have got something, bigger than what I need at the time, and than 2-3- years down the road I need it that size.
Than I suppose the debarker does not have to be used, but if it's there might just well use it.

I'm interested in hearing "Dueling Banjo's" played on a couple of sawmills too. ;D

While I don't like learning new things at my age and I love my SimpleSet I did run a guys LT50 with AccusetII on it and what I saw of it I really, really liked and if I were buying a replacement mill I'm pretty sure I'd include it.

I am still waiting for a good detailed report on the wide mill feature and see how it does. I'm thinking 95% of the time you will be cutting the same size wood you could cut with your regular mill so should be no difference (except you have more teeth spinning on the band so you get through the same cant/board with less revolutions- which I think should be a wash). What I really want to see is how it works in really hard, wide crotch wood.

What accuset2 does is it knows where the sawhead is AND where the bed is. This allows it to remove math almost completely from sawing. In pattern mode you can saw a preset board thickness down to a preset cant size(or last board) without having to figger out where to start in your head and will eliminate dog boards completly.  And much more.

I have the Command Control option and in retrospect the Accuset would have been worth it simply for the blade height readout. Vision isn't what it used to be and I'm not expecting it to get better.

What I really want to see is how it works in really hard, wide crotch wood.

Most of my big log slab crotch sawing is done for customers....not for me.
The wide head will give me 6 more inches and I can't tell you how many times I wished I had just
1 more inch of clearance.  :D

I have never been one for speed....just getting a good, smooth, flat cut on a huge crotch slab is my priority.

When sawing over sized logs, I charge a premium....my time is figured in at all speeds.

With the wide head, turbo 7 blades and diesel HP.....I should do just fine. Just waiting now.

By the time I get finished showing y'all some stuff about this wide head.....
y'all will be lined up at Woodmizer wanting to trade or buy a new Wide Head mill.  :D :D :D

Buy a new wide head on Feb. 29, 2018  and mention promo code "Goat" and receive a $300 discount.   :o :o 8) :D

You should reconsider Accuset while you can.

Get the rest of that math out of your head and free yourself up to think ONLY goat thoughts,  ALL the time.   You'll be surprised.

You should reconsider Accuset while you can.

As I mentioned early....I set my simple set....move the head through the log.....raise the head and bring it back and the simple set lowers the head to the next board.  smiley_scholar

I did watch a video on the Accuset last night but..... smiley_dizzy

You know at one point we had no set works and had to use our head.  :D

A few of you on here have said I should consider Accuset.....I just don't see an advantage.

If you look back in this thread, smiley_computer_monitor, no one has even told me what it does or compared it to Simple Set.  :)

JB Griffin put a good stab in it.  If you go to my very highly popular youtube chanel (up to 25 subscribers oh yea!) you will see a terrible vidjayo I made about accuset ii to help ole deese get acquainted with his new mill.  Speaking of which, how ya liking your mill @Deese ??

David,

SS is dirt simple to use but what little I saw of my use of Accuset looked just about as easy - especially for the basic functions. You clinked a setting and it cut that thickness till you changed it and you had a lot more pre-set options to use.

I think if I were using it I'd be tempted to use the up settings to determine the number of boards I could get out of a log and by changing the settings while doing so I could pre-determine the number of 4/4, 6/4, 8/4 with maybe a 16/4 thrown in to help maximize my return. Yeah, I do that manually in my head now but Accuset is more accurate and lots faster than my stubby pencil.

I would suggest you go visit someone with Accuset who uses it extensively and let them show you what it can do. I know it does way more than what I figured out in my brief usage.

Accuset II has 4 set modes:

Reference, Auto-Down, Auto-Up, and Pattern.  I will break down what they all do and why they are useful.

Reference Mode:
Reference mode has 4 different sets that are preset but you can change.
On my 40 I had mine set to:

1", 4-1/8", 14-1/2" and 34".

To use reference mode, just press the ref button and then press 1, 2, 3, or 4 to choose where you want to go, then hit the drum switch in the direction the headrig needs to go and it will go there.

Where I found reference mode to be useful:

-When I finish cutting a log and want to raise the sawhead to get ready for the next log while freeing myself up to run the hydraulics, go roll another log onto the loader arms, pick my nose, etc.  That's when I would bring the head to 14-1/2" because for the way I had my mill set and how tall I am that's what gave me the best clearance to see the log being loaded, turned and clamped.
-When you cut alot of 4-1/8" cants.
-When you want to drop the head to 1" to fill it up with fuel.
-When you want to raise the head to the highest it will go to oil the mast.

Pattern Mode:

Pattern mode is used to saw through a cant or certain size boards down to a cant or cants.  There are 16 different sets that you can save in pattern mode.  Pattern mode is great for cranking out dimension lumber, sawing inch boards down to a target size cant, sawing boards down to a tie, etc.  Pattern mode knows where the bed is and will calculate where the head needs to be to cut certain size boards down to the bed including the kerf and make it so that every board down to the bed measures the same.

Example: I want to cut 5/4 pallet boards down to a 7" face and a 9" face to make a cross tie.  So I set in the computer 1-1/4" drops down to a 7" cant, and I set another preset to 1-1/4" drops down to a 9" cant.  On my 7" face I just keep hitting the down button and cutting until the computer stops me at 7" and same for the 9" side.  Boom, done.  Or say I have a 8" wide cant that I want to take 2" cuts all the way to the bed to make 2x8 framing lumber.  Hit my preset for 2" drops and hit the down button then start cutting, it will cut each board 2" down to the bed so that every board is 2" thick.

Auto-Down Mode:

Auto down mode is about the same thing as simple set as far as I understand.  You use Auto down to open your first and second face (if you turn 90 deg) or you use it on your first and third face if you flip 180.  Auto down is also used for sawing grade lumber.
Auto down mode drops your head down from wherever it is the amount that you set it for without regard to where the bed is, and without sawing down to a target cant size.

Auto-Up Mode:

Auto-up mode is the same thing as auto-down except backwards.  Auto-up mode is useful when you are in pattern mode opening up a face.  It is also useful when you are squaring a cant to a certain size, say 8" and instead of just making a cut at 8" to bring it to size, you say ya know what, looks like theres an inch board in there.  I'll press the button for auto-up 1" and take an inch board off the top.  The computer will do the math for ya.  You can even say ya know what I want to take 1-1/2" boards to a 8" cant but don't have it programmed in pattern mode and dont want to take the time to do it.  So you bring the head near 8", and hit the rounding feature button to bring it to a perfect 8".  Then go into auto-up mode set for 1-1/2" and hit up a bunch of times til you're at where you wanna be.  Then make a cut and before you move the head switch to auto down for 1-1/2".  Then keep cutting until you get to 8" but don't forget to stop there because in auto down it won't stop going down unless it would put the head below 1".

The rounding feature pretty much just press the up button (or down I can't member) and it will bring the head to the nearest whole number.  This is useful when you are sawing manually and can't get the head to exactly the round number you need to be at.

Accuset II also has onboard diagnostics which show things like battery volts, h-bridge volts, etc.

This all might sound complicated but once you use it a little bit it's very simple and when I had my lt40 I used every feature that Accuset II offers.

Here is my video on Accuset II:

I saw your video 4x4. Not bad....I think it made Deese disappear.  :D :D :D

I really don't need a 'puter to figure what I can get out of a log.

If a sawyer is sawing a barn package....which I've been doing for months....and a sawyer can do math in his head  ::)....there is nothing more I need than my Simple Set. Trust me.

Accuset will not speed up my production....it consist of more gadgets and banks that can stop working at anytime.

....And I'll betcha this......somewhere....SOMEWHERE......some Ol timer has a Bandmill WITHOUT setworks that can probably saw circles around us with very little waste.

Its all what you get used to.
I am happy.....
I am simple....

Mr. Green:
I agree with you on fewer revs of the blade, however it may not be fewer revs of the drive wheel.
Also with more teeth to chew on log stops more operators may make it through them.
Question: With longer blades and the same drive wheel size will the blades last longer as far as revs or cycles is concerned?
Gerald

Gerald,

Very good point about the number revs on the drive wheel. I guess that should mean it takes the same number of revs to cut the same amount of lumber if I'm understanding this right. However the each blade should cut a proportionally increased amount of lumber per blade between sharpenings but I'm thinking the bf/sharpening should be about the same.

I realize it will cost more every time you damage or break a blade but unless you are replacing a lot more that should not a big factor.

I'd probably have to rebuild my band boxes to hold the new size. Again not a big factor.

Dave,

Please don't think I am pushing the Accuset over SS. Might be like Auto transmission vs a stick shift. If you are happy with SS go for it. I know you will love the new machine.

David, I guarantee that if we had identical mill but you had simple set and I had accuset2 I could out saw you over the course of a day. The second you take to think about where the head needs to be and get it there, I could already be sawing the next line.
Seconds add up to logs sawn or not at the end of the day.

If production don't matter that much to you ingore me.

You know, I read a new study recently. It was peer reviewed and in a prestigous academic journal. It stated that old goats don't prefer to learn new tricks, although they still can, unlike their incapable other furry friends...canine lupus familiaris(dogs). Bahaha!

But David, I'm with you here...I mean sort of. I've operated both the simple set on an lt35, and now accuset II on my super. For me and what I do, simple set would be just fine for me, at times I miss well...
It's simplicity, it sure beats a magnetic scale, that's for sure. If i was sawing a million feet per year with cants and dimensional lumber being yielded from the same log, it's not much of a decision. If it's straight dimensional lumber, or live edge through sawn slabs, simple set is just fine, and absolutely just as fast. With the lt35, I did 3500 feet in a day with me and one guy off bearing and running an excavator dropping logs on my mill, as fast as I could pull the clutch lever was as much thinking as needed to be done. We were sawing 2x4s and 1x10s ewp.

Thats right hunz.....thats what I've been trying yo tell these knot heads.  :D

I don't saw down to a cant. 95% of what I saw is 1 inch siding.
Barn siding is my bread and butter.
Recently I've been sawing a lot of 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10 and 2x12's.
Simple Set is all I need.

Well I reckon even if it is a goat and he is doing enough to run 2 mills, must be doing something right.

I like to keep things simple, soo if one of them already has simple set, I would probably have done the same thing.
I know if the mill is going to be stationary most of the time, I sure wouldn't go with the fine adjust outriggers.

I loved simple set on my LT35. I could cut boards of consistent thickness, rather than the typical thin and thick boards that I see other small bandmills make. I never figured anything more than simpleset would be needed. After all, I cut beams mostly, but I still make 4/4 and 8/4 from the excess material.

My new LX450 has Accuset, and if for nothing else than the ability to set the kerf, I'd be happy. But pattern mode lets me recover sideboards much easier, and reference mode lets me wander off while the head goes up to the top to load the next log. All the up down by hand with Setworks and waiting for the head to position is gone with Accuset. You simply set it and walk off while it goes to where it needs to be. Slick.

Congrats on your new mill by the way. Oh, and thanks for the video on reference mode. I didn't even know it existed..... it's way cool.

The FAO's dont stick above the bed.  But they have too much give to them and you constantly have to tighten them unless you order the locke for them (should be standard).  Plus, the far FAO at the tail of the mill will still stick above the bed and if you have the blade in line with it and slam into the back stop or have the mill cruising while you're stacking lumber you'll cut into it, done it before.

That's interesting. The only way I could hit the far outrigger, even with it at full hight would be to hit the bumper so hard that something broke.

I did not order the "fine adjust" outriggers. Is this gonna cause an uproar?  :D :D :D

I'd just like jacks that never stuck up above the bed at any time so that I wouldn't have to dig holes in frozen ground to avoid sawing their silly little tops off. If FAO's never stick up above the bed, I want them, otherwise they wouldn't be worth the extra cost to me.

Whatever Turbo Fang blades you're running need braces.  :o :o

Thanks for the breakdown on the accuset 4x4, I've been considering upgrading later this year and your explanation has me leaning that way. I have a cheat sheet laminated for the third face so I can come out even on dimensional lumber, but I have to rely on my math if the customer requested a variety out of a cant. The cheat sheet works pretty good except for that 1 typo.....

Maybe you should request a coffee cup instead of a hat?

I'll be pressuring washing my mill before long before trading it in.
I had Purple Power in mind tp spray it with before washing.

Some say yes some say no.....what works best?

I say yes to Purple Power, full strength.  It will also remove Love Bugs, etc. from your vehicle without harming the paint or decals.

Not made from Purple Drank, but still good.   :)

purple power is good stuff, we use it on the helicopters, and it removes grease and turbine soot real well, and is not hard on paint, nor is it real corrosive to bare metal bits. I should also add Purple power and super clean are almost exactly the same, except purple power is less $$, more savings sos you can afford to put holes in your new hat so's it will fit the goat proper! ;D

POSTONLT40HD, I haven't been on the forum in a little while, so I am just reading about your exciting new purchase.

CONGRATS!  My buddy got the exact same mill less than a year ago and it has the new "emissions" diesel.  It has a screen that shows all kinds of cool information about the engine, and the controls are a little different.  I ran it long enough to cut one log and it seems like the blade engage and guide arm switch are in different places than on my LT40.  It was hard for me to get used to.

I am sure you develop new muscle memory shortly with the new mill!

There's a bunch of different things the screen shows, these are the only two pics I have when I picked the new mill up in June. There's engine rpms, %engine load, exhaust temp, intake air temp, fuel temp, fuel pressure, engine hrs, voltage, etc etc. within each diagnostic you can go in and check out further if there is an issue. Just need to "play" with it when you get it. It's pretty neat, I always like to check the barometric pressure and adjust my sawing accordingly. It's a wonder anyone can saw without one equipped to their mill.

And yes, the toggle switch for auto clutch is moved to the top right. It will take a few hours to rellearn where it's at. You'll keep hitting the blade guide arm toggle switch, which thankfully operates left to right so you won't engage it by accident.

What degree blade are you running on the Wide Head Diesel?

I was gonna go turbo 7 but a guy at WM Indy said the turbo 7 didn't do to good in Pine or Poplar.
So I think I'm gonna stick with what I have been sawing with.....Double Hard 4 degree.

Double Hard 10s. My next box will be 4s. Seems like a lot of people run the 4s, and I haven't once tried them.

Never was a big fan of the turbo 7s. But that's just me.

My mill is similar in hp to ya'lls and I think I have found ( at least for now) THE blade........Kasco 7/35. I cut some 16ft pine the other day and impressive is an understatement,  12in wide cut 16ft long in about 20-25 seconds and flat flat flat. Even stalled the head once ( stopped going forward) squalled the drive belt, stopped the feed, let the blade come back up to speed and took off again leaving only a slight line on the board no waves at all.

Torque Poston - it's all in the torque with an oil burner.  Horsepower is simply a measure of how fast you will be going when you hit a wall - torque measures how far you will push that wall after you hit it!!

I can't answer that for sure but I would guess it has nothing to do with which setworks is on the mill as it only displays information regarding the engine. When I picked the mill up the guy giving me the demo said it was the first one he had seen, and didn't know much about it. It's pretty neat bc you can go through the display and hit some buttons and it will display any fault codes that there may be.
And also keep an eye on the barometric pressure...

You can't run a cogged belt on a 40. It has to slip when it's disengaged.

Well I got the old mill washed, greased, oiled the chains and packed it up for its trip to Woodmizer Albemarle, N.C. tomorrow.
I ordered a packet from WM that contains all new safety decals and replaced all of them on my mill.
DanG thing looks pretty good IMO.

New mill should be ready Feb. 2.....i'll do some cleaning up in the log yard and saw shed while waiting.

Jack the Sawmill Dog seemed to be excited about it all.

The mill followed me just fine to Albemarle, N.C.. I kept an eye on it in the rear view mirror.

Got her parked in the yard and full check up will begin. I took a good customer of mine with me. He's talking to Joe in this pic about buying a new mill.  :o Did I just hurt myself???  smiley_carpenter_hit_thumb  :D

I walked around looking at all the new mills, edgers and firewood processors. There were mills there to be serviced and another trade in mill.
Busy place.

Got to look at some log carvings in Joe's office. Somebody has a talent.

Come to find out Joes's wife owns a restaurant about 4 miles away close to town.
The place was packed with people.
Everything is homemade.
Pork Chops, Fried Chicken, mashed taters, cooked cabbage, green beans, corn, baked apples, pies and cakes and it goes on and on.
Of course I had the days special.....homemade chicken and dumplings. 8)

I may go back later and buy an Edger just so I can eat there again.  :D
But you can bet I'll eat there when i pick up the new mill.  digin_2

Probably a dumb question, but is there a reason to take yours in early, before they have your new one ready to go?

At one time the head DOT at Tok scale wife had a local eatery in town. There was plenty of space for truck parking, soooooo I always made a point to eat there, even when I was not hungry. The food was good too though which was a bonus.

Not a dumb question at all. In fact a very good question. We've had some unusual cold weather this January.
Even though I keep up with my orders and call the customer and tell them their lumber is ready to pick up, I always get the same response...." Do you mind if I leave it there until next Tuesday? Its suppose to be back up in the lower 60's by then". I tell them ok, thats fine....even though they "really needed their lumber as quick as possible".  :o

I've been in these rodeos before.

So this is what happened. There's things I really need to get done around the yard. Repairs on sheds, sorting logs and burning junk wood and slabs. Even putting tools back where they go, taking chainsaw blades to get them sharpened, moving my diesel tank closer to where the new diesel mill will set, changing oil in tractors.....just "things" that need to be done when its hard to do because of sawing orders.

I had 2 loads of logs come in this afternoon that I unloaded. When they saw the mill was not there they truly understood the wait on the new mill and were actually excited to wait just to see the new wide head.

When i got back to the wood yard today and I SAW my mill was not there...it felt like a 500 pound weight was taken off my shoulders. Now I  CAN'T  saw until my new mill gets here and I DON'T have to rush myself to get certain lumber ready and fulfill a promise to somebody who's not gonna pick up their lumber per their promise because it's too cold, too muddy, I forgot my son has a ball game, we had a sick cow, a tree fell on the fence and on and on.

So i figured.....make hay while the sun shines. ( old saying ).

I said in another thread...if we don't take make the time to properly do our own personal things, our place will go to pot. This is true.

So I'll be working around my place getting everything ready for the new baby come Feb. 2.....and this is really depending on if the weather is right and the S.C. Forestry Commission don't have me on a detail.

I looked in the mirror this morning singing that old song...."Don't worry be happy".  :)

Hopefully i'll live to be 91 like my dad.  :D :D :D :D

Hope this answered your question.  ;D

Post 204 was longer and more detailed, and went to the soul of running your sawmill business.

Well I did get an important thing fixed today while waiting on my mill.

The Dang door on my 97 7.3 F-250 has been hard to shut for over a year.
So I just went to the Ford place today and we put in new pins and bushings in the hinges.

Then a new latch and striker.

And if that wasn't enough, replaced the door handle and the "stuff" inside the door with new cables.

Before the door felt like it weighed 100 pounds when shutting it and then you had to slam it.
But now I can take one finger and slowly shut and the door latched perfectly.
I'm glad this is done!  :)

After that I had them do a full service on the truck.

The next thing I have to do is put a new sending unit in tank #1.
I can fill it up but it still shows empty on the gauge. I just have to keep up with my milage while running
off that tank.

But anyway, finished all my paperwork for the new mill today via emails and copy machine.
The guys at WM shined it up and got it ready for Monday mornings class and hook up.

Door works like a brand new door now!  8)

There's an Arborist in California with a 97 7.3 F250, he posted a youtube video of it turning 300,000 miles.

Actually 300,000 is not a whole lot. Get 750,000 and you got my attention.  :o

I know of one that has more than that. Guy uses it to pull campers for people that don't have a truck or don't want to do it theirself. Original engine never been rebuilt, and a Brians Truck Shop rebuilt e4od with bigger trns cooler and triple disk torque converter.

We appraise some high mileage pick up trucks. So far I believe in the F350 /3500 and under size we are at 970k miles. Most all haul cars/boats or for a U-Ship type co.

Well I didn't sleep a wink last night. Got on up at 4 am and hit the shower.
Kirk came by at 7:15 and off we went for a good breakfast.

Joe had the mill ready, shiney, clean and bright ORANGE!
Ya just don't realize how much paint fades over 7 years until you get a new mill.

Here's Joe and I sealing the deal just before I hooked up.

But before I left I got to see the biggest pile of dull blades I've ever seen.

Here's Kirk getting use to the feel of a heavy diesel on a wide head.

Loaded 2 boxes of 4° blades and a box of 7° Turbos. Laid them right on top of my firewood.  :)

We then hit the road home. Kinda funny seeing a radiator in my rear view mirror.  :D

After an hour and half driving back it felt good to pull in the driveway and get to the bathroom.  :o

We then pulled it across the road to the log yard and backed it in the shed. Set up went very well. no real difference.

Here are some things that are different to me.
Instead of a 3,000 psi gauge, i now have a 4,000 psi gauge.

The debarked is now Whicked! They have added tubing to support it to be able to sweep a wider path.
Looks strange to me.....but it works great!

A bigger engine and a bigger sound.....gotta get use to that.

Had a fun day seeing and talking to Joe. Tyler and Wendy again. They make things very pleasant.
Got some FREE GOODIES too.....love it and more stuff coming from Woodmizer.  8)

Now I gotta read 2 huge manuals and an engine manual.  :P

I'll post more pics as I saw some wide stuff and give you my take on the Turbo 7's.

I'm ready for spring.  :)

Very nice, I thought WM was putting crank suports on all the new mills now.
I don't see one on your mill.
Maybe 38 horse is not big enough to need one, I don't know. Maybe a new setup.
Best of luck with your new mill.

David,

Congratulations. Did you visit with your old mill while you were there?

I'm really interested in a detailed report on how that wide head cuts in a few months. Are you keeping historical records to see what % of the logs need the extra width? (I realize diameter alone is not enough because sweep, knots and other things may make you call on a couple extra inches beyond simple diameter readings.)

Has Kirk's feet touched the ground yet?

Nah.....no records will be kept. However, once I get comfortable with the whole operation of this new mill, I will advertise that I can saw a 34 inch wide live edge slab....and thats 34 inches at its widest point.
My prices are in line with other mills that saw up to 27 inches wide. But now that I can go wider, there will be a price increase for a diameter over 27 inches.....for live edge slabs.

After I got my wide and realized that there had been nothing done with the debarker to compensate for the extra 6", I call the dealer to see if there was anything in the works. Out of curiosity, I asked how many wide head mills were in Oregon. I was pretty surprised when he said about 20.

I know everybody thinks I went to the mill this morning throwing sawdust left and right.....negative.  :D

My first priority was to find the closest Yanmar Service Center.
About 6 phone calls to different places and I found HEN Equipment in Charlotte.
I drove up there and met the people. They work on HUGE Pans and Motor Graders.
He showed me all types of engines they work on, They have all the software for every Yanmar engine under the new EFI standards. A shop more than big enough for my sawmill to go in if I ever need to take it up there. I was told if I ever have a question or don't understand what information was going on on the dash board of my Yanmar, to call them and would walk me through it.
They then put in in touch with a company 6 miles from me that stock Yanmar filters etc. for my engine.
I left and went there and set up an account for ordering what I need when it comes time for me to service my engine. All these guys were really very nice.

After going through the Kohler deal....I thought I'd get out and find my diesel life jackets just in case my diesel ship starts to sink.  :)

After lunch I sawed about 20 /  6-1/2 x 8 x 8's for a shipping company.
Found out I need to tweak my log stops. They are set at 90° but putting pressure on a cant against them throws me out of square a little. I'll dial them in tomorrow.

All in all the mill ran great, lots of power and went right through 2 / 16 penny nails like it was butter. ;D
Gotta step up my game on some bigger logs when I get caught up.

Drives me CRAZY!!!  All his logs are different species, but the taper is at least consistent.
He says size doesn't matter as long as its 1 inch over an even number.
He'll air dry and re-saw later.

How's the mill running?
Are we going to have to get Jake over there to break it in?

I want to see how the first super wide log turns out, if the mill will eat it.
Title: Re: THE GOAT DID IT! A brand spanking NEW WOODMIZER!

Ya bunch of smart bass beetles.......especially you Deese!  :D :D :D

I tried the Turbo 7 blades today but not choice....cause I had to.

As I said I've been sawing a whack of logs from a guy who gets them off right of way clearings.
Mostly Oak, Poplar, Cedar, Persimmon and guess what showed up today?

Yep...... smiley_devil

I had a 4° blade on the mill I had used yesterday afternoon on a few logs and it was still sharp to start my day.
I sawed about 9 logs into cants and then next in line was a Hickory.....here we go.
I sawed 3 sides at about normal speed and was getting a little vibration but not enough to matter.
I had the lube flowing as I always do when sawing Hickory or Pecan.

All of a sudden.....the blade rises.

Then it dives drastically! I almost got through the log but couldn't......had to chainsaw the "board" off.

So at this point I'm thinking, well I've sawed a bunch with this blade and its time to change anyway.

So I put on a BRAND NEW 4°. My plan is to saw under the wave and have a good cant.
16 inches into the Hickory cant the BRAND NEW 4° dives almost an 3/4 of an inch.

Now I'm scratching my head.
If I had been running my gas engine at that cutting speed the engine RPM'S would have went down telling me
I am sawing faster than the blade can cut.
But with this diesel, the power from the engine was determined to keep sawing forward resulting in the 4° to dive. The diesel didn't grunt 1 time.

So it was time.....put on the turbo 7.

Installed it, cranked the PSI up to 3500 and the blade sailed through the log.  8)

Here's the face after the turbo 7.

I sent Joe Whitley at Albemarle Carolina Woodmizer and told him about it.
His reply was "I told you".  :D

The Turbo 7's performance was something I didn't believe but now I've seen it in Hickory.

But listen to me now.....I sawed Hickory for the next 2 hours.
Even though this blade is really good on high horse power engines you still have to respect the
hardnest of a Hickory Knot. If you go to fast you can get a wave on a very hard knot.
But as long as you "become one" with your log "Grasshopper", the Turbo 7 is a must have for high HP.

I called Georgia and ordered another box T-7's.

Now....it ain't over. The brand new 4° that dove in its first 16 inches of sawing didn't set real well with me.
So after finishing up the Hickory, I put a White Oak on the mill and reinstalled the Diving BRAND NEW 4°.

That blade sawed the White Oak like hot butter. I just had to prove to myself there was nothing wrong with that blade right out of the box....which can happen.

So there you have it....for my diesel, the turbo 7's gets a thumbs up in  smiley_devil_trident logs.
I betting they will be good on 30 inch wide White and Red Oak Slabs too.....I'll find out.

He'll resaw as needed or sell straight out.

Keep an eye on your belt tension. I bet it'll  drop a bit as it seats in. That's the first thing I check when I have a dive like that. Well, if there's no hardware evident its the first thing. I don't know if you had trouble with your gas mill, but the diesels are so loud and they don't lose rpms, it's hard to know if they are slipping.

Title: Re: THE GOAT DID IT! A brand spanking NEW WOODMIZER!
Post by: terrifictimbersllc on February 10, 2018, 08:14:05 AM
Regular 7s are have a 34 degree (from horizontal) back angle.  Turbos are 39 degrees (steeper).  The gullet of a turbo is also deeper than that of a regular 7.  So if you hold the Woodmizer blade gauge (regular 7) into a 7 turbo it won't fit all the way down to the bottom of the gullet.
Title: Re: THE GOAT DID IT! A brand spanking NEW WOODMIZER!
Post by: Magicman on February 10, 2018, 08:30:08 AM
It seems that everything about the 7°T's require more HP.  That deeper gullet is also carrying more sawdust

They are quickly becoming my "go to" blade.  I zipped through some White Oak this week that otherwise I would have been removing a 10° and replacing it with a 4°.   ;)

That being said, I have still seen some "blade wave" when sawing through 3" & 4" pine knots.  Knotty SYP is the absolute most challenging thing that I regularly encounter.

Exactly! I weened myself from the 10's years ago, then went through the 7° era and finally strictly 4°.
I had it made!  8)
Then what did I do?......Got a diesel. Now I gotta have the T-7 blades.
I'll still be testing to see if I can go strictly Turbo 7°.....not sure yet but then again I wasn't sure if I even need the Turbo 7's at all.  :D

I'm running just the T7s now. Still Jane some 10s around,  but only use them if I'm out of the T7s. Used to have 4s, and tried some 13s, but the T7s seem to have superseded both. The T7 is supposed to work well on the tropical hardwoods. That may even have been their original purpose. To put tropical hardwoods into perspective, hickory/pecan is 1820 Janka, purpleheart is 1860, and Ipe is 3684.  :o

Theres no such thing as one blade that will do it all. We run wm 7/39 and kasco 7/40 exclusively at and all was well until the logs freeze and your screwed.  And white oak this week wouldn't cut flat at all with em, so put em on the sharpener and cut em to 4/40 profile and bingo.

Thankfully we do not have frozen.  I only saw maybe a dozen White Oak logs per year and have always kept a couple of 4° blades in the bottom of my blade box for them.  I also use the 4° blades for knotty SYP.

The pine we saw is for train trussle timbers and they require a very good stick, mainly butt cuts and native timber no plantation junk. So not a whole lot of knots. 7/40 Kasco will FLY through it, 12ft long, 12-16in wide cuts, 8sec a line all day long.  Thats 90 ft a min.

PC - what is this partially frozen that you speak of?
You might mean that its frozen solid, edge to edge.
or top to bottom, also end to end .
All of the time.
Everyday for months, no?
How could a log possibly be un-frozen?

Frozen outside and not inside, or frozen inside and thawed outside.

It takes more time to freeze the whole log. then it takes more time to thaw the inside.

Make sense?
Or are you just saying your logs are always frozen?
Logsicles are not good.

Well hopefully the engine is under warranty for a while at least, I believe I would hold up on the delete kit for the time being.

Delete kits are very popular up here, but come with a different set of problems, usually takes some computer program alterations too.

If its anything like my Kubota diesel, there should be a indicator light that would come on when it needs to do a regen. Then it would be revved up for a period of time, to build up heat and burn the soot out. When all else fails read the owners manual. ;)

It will regen on its own. I think mine was between 60-70% the first time. the computer screen for the engine will say regen in process or something of that nature. Don't shut the mill off. Just run it as normal and keep operating.

I was at Woodmizer Friday getting the retrofit debarker installed and I asked them about it. He said at some point it will do a more thorough regen and you will not be able to saw. Just leave the engine running while it does it's thing. I guess you'll know when it happens bc I understood it that you wouldn't be able to engage the autoclutch. I could be wrong there but he said I won't be able to saw during the process.

In the diagnostics you can manually regen if you feel the need to. You can also cancel a regen, but only so many times and then it does a mandatory regen that you can't stop.

Our Volvo wheel loaders and Kubota skid steer have had nothing but problems with the regen system... not looking forward to it myself.

I do not know much about the new diesels, but my son in law worked for the cat dealer up on the slope for quite a while. 99% of their work was the new urea and regen systems, and he claimed 99% of that was operators manually keeping them from regenning, until they flat would not run anymore.

So from what teeny weeny bit I know, I wouldn't be manually keeping them from regenning  if at all possible.

As far as moving it outside to regen, I think with the engine mounted high up like on a mill, I would just make sure there is nothing combustible above it for a few feet.

I did see where I can manually start a regen. I keep the screen showing soot buildup. Just trying to learn a time frame.

This is true. Where I buy my filters locally at a Yanmar parts place, they said most of the problems come from workers NOT regening and by passing it.
They don't own the machine.
They are trying to meet a deadline
Down time is money.

Well NOT regening is diffidently money once the engine locks up.  :o :o :o

As far as the sparks during the process, being a firefighter I have extinguishers posted around and a water supply if I need it. A fire is always on my mind.

During the normal regen process you can saw. But at some point there's going to be more thorough regen in which you won't be able to do anything, but let it do it's thing. I forget the timeframe but I think he said after a couple hundred hours or so the engine will call for that regen. It's not very often.

Hope that clears things up at least a little. Maybe.

We have a Gehl R190 with a Yanmar. The dealer has had to send out a tech to hook up a laptop a couple of times. They said running it hot and hard is the best way to keep from having trouble.

Yep, from everything I understand it depends on how it was run, not the hours of run time. Warmed up and working hard, they will burn much cleaner, this works on trucks and other equipment, how do you keep a mill in the wood, when your are backing up every 10 to 20 feet?? Idling is a no go on a lot of systems, which is the main reason companies have switched back to gas on the slope.

These new EPA engines save up all the carbon and soot instead of releasing it into the air.
Once enough gets saved up, the engine needs to rev up to high rpm's and the muffler gets RED HOT and burns all the soot and ash up.

Big truck diesels have to be regened also if they are not run at a high rpm going down an interstate every now and again.
Most trucks don't have to regen because they keep it burned off just running the roads.

You have a much different experience with the trucks than we do., Working hard they don't have to regen as often, but still do and it is reported it uses around 50 gallons of fuel every time.

I was in heavy truck sales in 2003 when the first epa engines were headed our way. Seminars, sales meetings, more seminars, another sales meeting and we still weren't prepared for the gong show that arrived. Cummins did the best job of getting us ready. Customers wanted to vent frustration at a government and all they had to talk to was this sales guy! We got our smooth sales talk speeches ready but no one really wanted to listen.

Ok Y'all....there must be tons of talk on sawdust removal on here.
I don't want a conveyor...
I don't want any hose hooked to my new mill.

What I have in mind is a vacuum system.
I can discharge my sawdust on the floor all day and its not in the way.

But at the end of the day I want to have a bendable hose I can suck the sawdust straight up 15 feet and then it goes out
of the building though a 30 foot pipe into a pile.

I'm not good at collecting junk and making something work. I just need to know where I can buy
a "sucker / blower" that has enough power. I can hook the pipes up.

Since our insurance company and Fire Marshal requires our mill to be cleaned weekly, I have tried to use my 5 hp blower as a sawmill vacuum to pick up all the debris under the mill that was missed with the hose blower and I didn't have much success.  Admittedly, 90% of the sawdust was already sucked out when sawing, so the stuff under the mill was that nasty, irregular mix of residual dust and all the stuff that falls off the logs when sawing, such as small bark chips, big chips, poison ivy, grape vines, etc.  With a six inch inlet, the pipe mouth kept clogging.  The blower had enough suction and would pick up the wet sawdust OK but not overly fast, but between the hose clogging and all the bending over, it wasn't much fun.  I went back to shoveling.

I think a better solution would be something designed to pick up lots of fibrous debris without clogging, with a big hose.  I think the silage blower, lawn sucker, grain vac, something like that would be better.  Something designed to suck up bigger, heavy wet stuff without clogging.  I hadn't thought of this, I may look into them also.

Harbor freight 2hp blower. If your sawshed has a concrete floor, let the sawdust pile up on the floor all day, 1 pass with a small tractor with a box blade, cheap, simple..

I'm sure some of you with these new diesel engines have had to re-gen by now.
My soot is at 16% right now.
I was wondering when it comes time to re-gen is there a warning, reminder, light flashing or what when its time to re-gen.

Thanks.

I have a call in to Woodmizer to see when they changed from Tier 3 to Tier 4.  David when you commented about the soot level of 16% I started looking for my indicator and there ain't  one.  My mill was delivered one year before yours.  They must have made the change-over in 2017 or I got an older engine.  I am not complaining however if that is the case.  Regening a sawmill might be tricky if it is like my Kubota tractor (takes 20 minutes at 2300 RPM).  ( maybe saw longer, bigger logs  8)  I am old school and running engines at screaming RPMs just don't seem right when you don't need to.
Maybe always returning head with engine engaged at full RPM will take care of it.  What does your manual advise.   But just know how much I am enjoying the diesel compared to what I learned on(16 hp B&S).  It is amazing.

Mine has a Yanmar dashboard. I can toggle through all the information about the engine.
My manual didn't tell me how it would alert me when I need to regen but I'm assuming when its time, something will come up on that screen to alert me.....if not I'm assuming the RPMS will drop.

My high RPM when I engage the blade is 3030 rpm's.

From what I understand ay some point the auto clutch switch was moved and maybe another switch but they moved them back this year.

Seems like things are really changing for 2018.

I have been through the code lights....HATE THEM!

If these mills are gonna have big engines they need a way to SEE the numbers of whats going on.
If you don't have a dashboard to read these numbers......then they tell you you need an authorized mechanic to plug a computer up to it. This will send you to the poor house...I know. My code light kept burning out.

Bakers are a fine looking mill.  I considered them when I bought my WM.  The time and hassle with a 4 post mill steered me away from that design for a portable business.  From what I was told, you basically have to look at the feet with every log to make sure you are not sinking in the ground.  If so, the lumber is not going to be cut straight.   Stationary on concrete footings, I think they would be great.  Besides, my mill will wear 3 grown men out really fast, and it does not burn anywhere near the amount of fuel one of those big engines will drink.

You just nailed my dilemma.  I get a fair bit portable work and I don't want to loose that, I will keep my 35 no matter what and leave it with the resaw on it, it really puts out the wood that way, but I hate the thought of doing portable work with the 35 if I have a rocket mill in the mill house.

From what I understand the 35.9 diesel is gonna be the largest engine that will be on a WM now.

That's rather depressing - I have been nosing around at the 70's and Bakers - the turn off on WM right now is the reduced HP.  Baker will put on a 74hp turbo tier 3....

Its something I just heard.....but I heard it for the truth. And honestly the way mine saws with the 35.....I don't need anymore hp......yet.  :D :D :D
I would like to hear about your 33" cuts when you make some.   I have 42HP turbo now,  and the thought of going wider with less power on a new mill, makes me wonder.

How can Baker sell a Tier III engine, legally? I would think any mill with a 2018 manufacture date would have to have Tier IV Final?

I'm surprised at the reduction in HP. I can't imagine that the 70 series would work well with only 35.9 HP.
Title: Re: THE GOAT DID IT! A brand spanking NEW WOODMIZER!

I almost bet that baker bought the tier 111 engines before the epa deadline for the engine manufacturers to go up to the tier 4.

I wouldn't doubt that the same reason is why the reduction in horsepower, either the higher horsepower didn't meet tier 4 requirements, or if they did, the price of them is considerably more.

It is funny how all that works, and it has brought back kit trucks, I can buy a new kit truck with a pre emission motor, it is legal right now, but I bet that changes before long.

I would still think that if the mill is manufactured in 2018, then it must meet 2018 specs, whereas putting a glider in an older truck would not have to meet 2018 emissions.

The laws on that are funny, even the new e-logs required for any truck titled after 99, you can install an older engine and keep the paper work in the truck to prove date on the engine and be exempt.

I was told by a salesman for Bobcat that the tier 3 and 4 has a break in hp as well as years, ei; an engine of a certain hp had to meet tier 4 a different year than a another engine.

My new mill has 2 manuals. I only got 1 and the other is ordered.
The one that is ordered has the debarked info in it.

So here's my problem. I sawed Poplar for the first time today.
The debarked gets to random places on the log and digs I so deep that it stops the blade from turning and trips the breaker.
Have any of you with the new debarked experienced this?

I don't have a manual yet to read up on the debarked.

Thanks

Which way is the new Debarker turning?  Mine turns so that it is always pulling out of the cut.  It sounds like your new one is turning like a "skilsaw" and pulling into the cut.  It certainly would do a better job of cutting while turning that way but there is also a greater chance of the blade digging too deep and stopping which it sounds like yours is doing.

Talk to WM and find out which way the blade is supposed to be turning.  Since it is a DC motor, reversing the leads should reverse the armature direction.

My mill is a 2017.  It also came with two manuals.  I will take a look and see if it says anything about the barker.  To be honest, I haven't even used mine that much to know for sure which way it turns.  Magic man is right though.  You should be able to reverse the polarity and make the blade turn the other way.

Thanks

I can't remember off hand which way the blade is turning as I sit here. I do know before it would throw bark in my face occasionally. It doesn't now.
I will check in the morning and call WM to make a decision on reversing the wires.

Thanks Magic.

I looked at my manual.  Not sure if it makes any difference but according to the schematics, if you were  floating above the mill looking down to the top of the barker motor, the blade is pictured so it is cutting in the counter clockwise direction.  This means that the chips wouild exit toward the tongue end of the mill or the direction of the barker is cutting against the direct of the head.  This would make sense.  If the blade is turning the other way, as the head moves down the mill, it is pushing the barker blade deeper into the log.  I could see where this would be a problem, if this in fact is whats happening.  Hope this helps.

A quick way to tell is look at the back of the teeth.  If the blade is on backards, you have been cutting with the back of the teeth.  They will be shiny.

Hello,
These Mark III Debarker assemblies have been used for a few years on the LT70. I also had issues tripping the breaker. My advise is to not hold the button to the left as much as you had with the Mark II. If you watch the in and out motor it moves at a range. If you go over this range you are overloading the motor. I keep bumping the button now I have not tripped the breaker since.

When I took my mill to Indy last week they reveresed the motor and the blade. However, he told me they are aware that these new debarkers are tripping the breaker and to report back if mine is. He said there will be a "skid plate" available to keep the debarker from digging in to the log and tripping the breaker.

Since the sawmill is "brand spanking NEW" I would not switch wires or anything until I talked with WM and had their approval.  Marty gave you the answer above but I would not like having to fine tune the Debarker's pressure on the log.

The debarker on my 70 wide turns so that it spits the junk away from the blade, not into it like my lt40 did.  BUT, the debarker actually works much better when it turns the way the old lt40 did.  Think of a car doing a burnout.  When the car does a burnout the tires are moving faster than the vehicle is actually traveling wnd you lay the rubber down on the ground.  Now pretend you're in that car being towed by a tractor trailer doing 60mph and you have the trans in reverse and are spinning the tires backwards as fast as you can but the tractor trailer is stronger and is towing you steady at 60 mph.  The tires are floating over the ground more not as much digging into the blacktop.  Thats the best analogy I can think of rn lol.  Moral of the story the debarker actually digs in much better when its spinning in the direction the headrig is traveling not against it.  I think the angulation probably has alot to do with it too because on certain size logs the debarker bites in good but on most of the small logs I cut the debarker (with full psi) floats over the log and doesnt bite in very well.

The skid plate will limit the depth of cut that the Debarker makes.  I am wondering how it will work on the deep bark furrows in some SYP?  I would hate to see it skip over dirt that was deeply embedded in rough bark.

Another point to remember; breakers have a limited number of times that they will trip and reset.  They will and do "wear out".

You had better order a new breaker.  They get weak and the more it trips, the less it takes to trip it.   :-\

It only trips when sawing thick Poplar bark. Sawed the last of it this morning and it tripped twice.
The rest of the day we sawed Red Oak and Loblolly.....no problems what so ever.  :)

Well here it is. I took this short video and scrolled through the whole board.

These ash trays are magnetic. I am dead set on keeping the sawdust out of my auto clutch and behind the panel where my break and up and down motor is.
Those ash trays hold the 7/16 bolts when I take them out....and hold anything else I don't wanna lose.  :)

You are gonna get strung up and Debarked with a fuse blowing backwards turning blade!!!

Yes but not loosing his nuts in the sawdust ain't right.  Dem magnetic trays gotta go so he can suffer with the rest of us.  We gotta join together and rise up.  This is under the table cheating, that's what it is.

My 44th birthday was in January.  My wife bought me a card that said on the front that "I was like the mighty oak"  Being a sawmill guy, I related to that.  Then, I opened it up and it said "just like the mighty oak, my nuts have dropped too".

I guess instead of getting freebie tape measures and multimeters at HF, I need to get some of those trays  and carry around with me. ;D

Chris' story is a real neat one.

While he was rodeoing and singing on the side his mother would dub tapes 1 at a time and send with him to sell as well as mail order. He was a good cowboy but his fortune came when a recording outfit picked him up after hearing him on a home dubbed tape his mom made and sold via mail. He was a ballad singer and a good one. He had a mom that loved him and believed in him, like many of us do. My mom has a hand in all my successes. Here is my favorite C L song.

Ahh, I see! He was a transplant, I didn't realize that. I guess I need to brush up on my Leduox facts 😊 I'm from that area originally and have family in Kaycee. In fact, one of my little cousins out there (I think he's 10)told me he's "in a pretty serious relationship with Chris Ledoux's granddaughter"😊 I guess she won't even let him talk to the other girls in Kaycee, which, since there's only about three other girls in town, probably isn't too big of a deal😁😂😂 BTW, if you are a person who is prone to dressing up and pretending you are a cowboy, Kaycee is not the place to do it. Thems real cowboys out there!!

The wide head came in handy today.
Sawed this load of mixed woods....got him a good load.

I even sawed him 2 bundles of stickers.

We saved the best for last. This customer had a 26 - 1/4 diameter White Oak log about 4 foot long. The extra room to open up the throat on the saw came in handy.
He has 2 more logs in the 30-34 inch ranch we'll slab next week.

Here's the Oak.....turned out nice with a 4° sawing it.

I Had a customer bring in 2 chunks of wood this morning claiming he was gonna test the new wide head.  :D
Well the wide head is now paying off! I love it! Can saw jobs now i once could not.
Using a Turbo 7 we first loaded the white oak. It was 5-5 inches long.

he produced some very nice, flat, smooth slabs.

Then we loaded the Cherry Chunk. It was 33" at the widest point and 4' - 7 " long.

The Cherry also produced some nice 33 inch live edge slabs. The Turbo 7 slabbed it like butter.

the only bad part is when i got to the center of the crotch....a DanG rock!
A Turbo 7 will NOT saw a rock. :D

But we got'em sawed and loaded. Good morning!

My neighbor has an old meadows circular mill.  Once, he was sawing into a big walnut log.  As he was goign through it, he heard the blade hit something and at the same time felt the wind off something as it flew by his head.  He found parts of it in a clay bank behind his mill.  It was a porcelain fence insulator that the bark covered just enogh that he did not see it.  From that point on, he sawed standing behind a truck mudflap, and just stuck his head out a little to see.

Sawing tress is like playing golf too me....I never know what I am going to hit.

My plan is coming about, now that my customers know I have a Wide Head.
The weather is now warmer and logs I used to not be able to saw are coming in.

Today it was an old Sycamore....bone dry slabbed in to bench slabs.

Behind that was some wide Walnut in the 28 to 31 inch range.

These slabs turned out really nice.

(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/24625/b5.jpeg?easyrotate_cache=1519170977) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/24625/b6.jpeg?easyrotate_cache=1519170977)

.......and then the rest of the day was an order for Board and Baton.

Pretty good day.....and the weather was nice.

My skid plate for my debarked came today. I'll have to see about getting that on this week.

Well I had my first regeneration today.  :D :D :D
That engine got Hot!

It was an automatic regen. I didn't know it was coming. I have been keeping an eye on the soot level. I figured I would have to do it manually but when it got to 78% a banner appeared saying
"Automatic Regeneration".
I stopped sawing and left the blade engaged to keep the engine at a high RPM.
It took about 20 minutes and the banner went away at 20%.

But I tell ya, that diesel was cooking.

Auto ignition temperature of dry pine = 800F, I have to think this system is not the final answer.

I am assuming that all of the heat was coming out of the exhaust.  Could you have kept sawing?

Yes I could have and did finish my slab. After that I decided to just let it run its course so I could spend time watching the numbers change on the dashboard and writing numbers down so I could remember stuff.

Opened up my skid plate today that WM sent me.

There were no directions but the only way it would fit was to remove the existing washer and replace it with my new bigger washer  skid plate. The skid plate and the washer are the same thickness.

No problems installing it and this is what it looks like.

I installed it last thing today. I will see tomorrow and post.
Had a problem today with blades jumping off...forward.
Realigned the wheel on the idle side and it fixed it but then had to realign the blade.
My drive belt tension had dropped to below 12 so I tightened it back to 19.
Going through the break-in period of a new mill....but its fun.  8)

Thats the whole point.  ;D The blade cuts like a skill saw now and goes to deep and stalls the rotation and the breaker clicks off.

Ahh I see.  Myn doesn't cut too deep on the 70 and I have yet to trip the breaker on the debarker and when I have extra dirty logs I'll hold the button in on the debarker for the whole cut just lay her right into it

David,
How about an update on your wide headed mill?  How many hours are on the clock?  Does it do everything as well as you had hoped when you kerpluncked the cash on it?  In wide cuts in hardwood do the 4° or the 7° do better?  How significant is the increase in the diesel power over the gas engine you had previously? Does the lubemizer keep your blade appreciably cleaner than a drip tube? Any other observations are welcome too.

I have found myself looking at the wood-mizer site and also checking sawmill exchange among other sources more often lately.  This usually ends with me sliding further down that steep slope.

P.S.  has your ankle pastern completely healed?

Q. How about an update on the mill?
A. It took getting used to. One thing was the debarker. There is a learning curve to it.
The other thing is the guide arm goes out farther and you have to be more aware of what it
may bump / hit / or destroy.

Q. How many hours on the clock?
A. 326
Q. Does it do everything you had hoped?
A. The mill is a beast once you get used to it. It really felt different when i first started sawing
but now I'm comfortable with it.
The Tier 4 Yanmar engine is a whole different ball game.
A lot of times when I saw though a log or cant and come out the other side.....sometimes
I turn the blade off. As the rpm's drop as it is suppose to, a sensor does not stop the rpm's
to an idle state. The rpm's will keep falling until until the engine just shuts down.
Then you have to restart the engine. To prevent this I just keep the engine running.
When it first started it I called Woodmizer and spoke with Chris Barnes at extension 1603.
This was on August 21st. 2018.
Chris was not able to help me with my problem and no one else there could either.
Chris said he would have someone from Yanmar call me and to this day....noone one has called
me back. Going through what I went through with the Kohler, I am not documenting
  everthing.
Q. In wide cuts to the 4 degree or Turbo 7 blade work best?
A. As far as having the power and rpm's I now have, I am using nothing but Turbo 7 blades.
Using a T-7 blade sawing a 34 inch wide slab I still saw slower than I would sawing a 10 inch
  wide slab.
This is one thing you really have to get used to using the T-7 blades. Believe it or not,
sometimes you will get waves in some species by sawing to slowly. Speed up and the waves
go away and the cut is smoother. Again, another learning curve.
When a 4 degree gets dull.....it will start to saw waves. From my experience when a T-7 gets
dull it happens all at once. Your sawing fine and all of a sudden it dives.
Most of the T-7 blades that break with me is always in Cedar.
Q. How significant is the increase in the diesel power over the gas engine you had previously?
A. The increase on power with the diesel vs.gas is a must sawing 34 inch wide slabs.
I burn more diesel than I do gas though. Plus the diesel has a dash board giving me
temperatures, percentages, maintenance times and voltages that every engine including
  including gas engines should have.
The engine knows when to re-gen. Let it do it and keep on sawing but DO NOT turn the
the blade off during re-gin.....keep the rpm's going. It take about 30 minutes to re-gen.
Q. Does the lubemizer keep your blade appreciably cleaner than a drip tube?
A. When I ordered the mill, lubemizer was suppose to be on it but was left off by mistake.
I saved myself $600 by keeping the drip tube.
I honestly with out a doubt love the drip system better than the lubemizer.
I don't have to worry about a water pump going out or a check valve freezing and cracking
or nozzles stopping up from trash.
The Lubemizer nozzle is installed on the high performance blade guides. I didn't get them
either. Without the HP Blade guides I get a little wider cut.

Q. What have I had to fix that is under warranty?
A. Key switch went out....had a short. Woodmizer sent me a new one.
The thin metal blade guide located beside the blade roller that stops the blade from going up
and down to far if the blade rises or dives to far was destroyed. I also lost the blade guide
roller. this was caused by a 170 inch blade under 3500 PSI breaking.
When the blade broke it took parts with it.
Q. What is the most important thing to watch for when you get a Wide head diesel?
A. EVERY NUT, BOLT AND BELT! With this much vibration something is gonna loosen up
when your mill is getting broken in. Its nobodies body fault....this happens with all equipment.
I had to re adjust the tightness on the blade guide arm due to it about to shake off.
I had to re adjust the idle blade wheel due to my blade jumping off forward.
  Nothing to it.
DO NOT let the debarker get away from you and slam it into a log. The shaft pin will shear off
that holds the small pulley on under the motor that controls the debarker in and out path.
I've done it twice and I keep pins in stock. 3/8 x 1-1/2.
When servicing I use Yanmar filters and Rotella Oil. I do not use any additives.
Keep the radiator and air filter clean and keep the mill clean and ATF it where needed and
  grease it.

I highly recommend getting a Wide head.

Thank you for the thorough review.  I hope that you are enjoying being retired.  We had an offer on our mill today but it was a little low.  Everything we have is for sale but not on sale.

If we do sell it we will have to get another soon.  If we buy a new mill it will definitely have a wide head.  Being able to saw 34" wide slabs would give us an edge. We have logs piled everywhere, the pond is full of logs too and I have recently begun getting 100-125 year old longleaf pines from an area near where I work where they are clearing paths for subdivision roads.  Some of these trees will yield four 16' logs ( that is good wood for this part of Fla.).
