I am bringing this back to the top to see if I can get an answer about this:
(Hello everyone. I enjoy reading all the great posts and the help you have given me over the years. While still waiting for my new mill I am wondering what size logs you would normally get for tie quality logs.)
What would be the minimum size to make a tie? And, what is usually the largest log you receive for a tie quality log? Thanks

Assuming your cutting 7x9 ties the bare minimum is a 12" log. The tie market is getting tight and wane is not really an option.  Larger logs are ok but most buyers want a boxed heart unless oak or hickory so need to have a market for sidecuts. Most people don't realize what it takes for a tie log. Cant saw junk into ties, it just wont work.
Saw you tomorrow!

I already have a company that will buy the side lumber. I also have 2 other back up companies that I have contacted. I hope to be up and running in a month or so. Still waiting on my new mill. Thanks
