I been thunderstruck... Happened to be looking out of the window when out of nowhere an air to ground lightning bolt appeared just outside of the house. Though it hit my pickup, it was that close. Didn't sound like thunder, more like dynamite going off.

When the dust settled my truck was OK, but this is the second nice poplar I have lost in a two or three years to lightning.

I wonder what the lumber would look like.

Wow! Is that yellow poplar, then?

It was, I suspect it's Well Done Poplar now. On a good note I can see that the stress has been relieved from the top log.  :D

Put a piece on the mill, I'm curious, water must boil instantly. Does it shatter the wood, what is the moisture gradient like...

Southside

The one that got hit a couple years ago was alive, the piece on the ground was bone dry, so it must boil right off.

I saw a good bit of lightening killed pine. Bone dry, hard as concrete, usually has some bright red streaks in the butt cut. The amount of energy in a direct hit is just mind boggling. By all means, put the log on the mill.

Ive seen a handful of poplars get hit the past two years in summer, i think theyre just so full of water as to make a lower resistance than other trees.

Im told this white oak was a lightning strike.  The inner core was fully separate from the outer jacket, thru the length of that butt log.  I sold it as stave but only on the inner dimension.  If you get a funny tasting batch of jack daniels, its my fault.

My Father and me was cutting here. Had some pine slash at a base of a big tree. Lighting hit the tree and caught the slash on fire. Than the rain came and put the fire out. :o Was not much of a fire,4-6 feet away from the tree.
Lighting use to like my big pine. Sometimes it would blow the limbs off the trees. Once I found big pieces of wood on the ground.
I have not seen lighting hit my trees for years.

I forgot to mention that WO had 4 rows of fence thru it and was among the tallest tree on the property.  Im guess that made for a good antenna.
