This is Runt. He is half Beagle and half Rat Terrier. He runs rabbits and trees squirrels as well as coons. He will chase a deer when in the mood. But he has to check out every log that comes on the yard and marks most of them. >:(
He is a very good hound and eats the white grubs that come out of old pine logs. :-/

It's funny you should mention that your dog is half rat terrier. My dad was from Kentucky and one time when we were down there visiting, we picked up a new puppy. It turned out to be a rat terrier. He was a little dog with a big dog personality!!! He protected our yard like no dog we ever had before. He would go after dogs twice or more times his size and win!! The picture of your dog really brought back some fond memories of my childhood. Thanks ;D

This is Cole, our log dog. He is part black lab, part golden retriever, and part beagle. He likes to climb up in the trees after we fell them.

Most of my customers really like the dogs and the other day they ran 2 deer through the log yard while some folks from up North were here. They were tickled to see the deer and thought it funny that they were running from such little dogs. I guess they do not know Rat Terriers.

They must not have been from very far North. This far north dogs that run deer don't never run again. I realize that in some states its legal and probably ethical, but in deep snow country its bad news. Those little dogs stay on top of the crust and with a group will run a deer to death, or catch up to it and kill it as the deer will break though and flounder.
Yep, up here dogs running deer is not a good thing for deer or dogs.
While I've seen dogs chasing deer quite a few times over the years, I've not seen any conclusive evidence that they've actually caught one and done it in.
Sometimes it's as though the deer are a willing participant. One time our half beagle and half chihuahua and large beagle were running a big doe on the farm. They ran it in a circle over about 80 acres a time or two. I was able to call in the little dog but the big beagle would not come in so son Chris intercepted him on the next round and brought him back to the house. The doe followed him and the dog for a half-mile through the open pasture and came right to our yard fence and watched for a good little bit even though there were two dogs and several people in the yard only a few feet away. Her curiosity satisfied, she snorted and bolted back down the direction she came with white flag waving.
Animals sometimes have strange relationships. When Mr. Head (picture above) was our guest, he loved to run and bark at the big mule and standard bread horse we had. They'd whinny and bolt in fear and run a big circle in the pasture. Then come back and let him do it again. After a couple of times, they'd get board of the game and just ignore him barking in their faces and nipping at their hooves. I was sure at any moment the mule would deal him a deathblow but he never did. Other times he could just be crossing the corner of their pasture and they'd thunder over and try to stomp him and he'd have to run for his life.
Here is our indoor Log Dog. Scooter the Yorkshire Terrier. Abosolutely fearless. The breed has been known to attack street sweepers or anything else that invades their territory. We also have an Australion Shephard and a Husky. Scooter rules the household. Right now he is guarding my project wood. This is one of my whiteoak stumps drying in the house.
If you look real close the other stump is in the background with the hole plumb filles with hickory sticks waiting for another project.

Yes, those yorkies are fearless. We had one that would take on "anything". The "big dogs" didn't fool with him. Old age finally took him.
I could see where dogs and deer and deep snow not get along well. But here if we did not use dogs to move the deer around they would just sit on one hill and inbreed to death. I have hunted a place where dogs are not allowed to run and none to the bucks have eye guards on the left side. Over the years the buck's racks are getting smaller and the deer getting fewer.
Like Bibbyman I have seen deer that seem to enjoy a good chase. We had a doe chase the dogs last summer and it was quite a scene. Later we saw her cross the log yard with two fawns.
If you have ever hunted with hounds and learned to listen to the baying of the chase it stirs something in your soul. To sit out on a ridge and hear the hounds comming your way and you are trying to guess where the deer will cross and if it is legal your heart will be beating so loud you can no longer hear the hounds. It is a rush and thrill that will stay with you for life.
Now if you use dogs to fetch ducks, point birds, chase bunnies or tree squrriels/coons, or run deer it is all the same. Hunters have been doing it since the first dogs have been domesticated. To see a good dog work and the pride of a owner when his hound takes lead of the chase or works out the back trail is something else.
Now house cats kill more bunnies, quail and other things just for the thrill of killing and often do not eat it. House cats have just about wiped out the quail population here. A few years ago my local turkey population took a major drop and then did my chicken crop. 4 house cats later and all is well on the farm again.
Come down some time and I will teach you what Runt is saying while on the hunt.

Most southern dogs have to take two or three naps before they reach the porch. We do too.
I like to take at least a half hour break to get ready for dinner :)
My log dawgs hang close to the mill when I am sawing. Alot of times there is one under the mill while I am sawing. Us Southerners can take a bit of heat to warm our bones. Runt is a small hound and never really cast a long shadow.

Arky, my main pooch, Deputy Dog, thinks your new pup looks like a "Stumpy" to him with those fat little front legs of his.
Now while Deputy Dog is huntin' addict and likes nuthin' better than climbin' through a log pile looking for rodents's of any description, the little feller won't stand still long enough to get a picture of him. When he does come to a stop it's with his back-side well in the air and his head stuck in a crevice, not exactly his best side, if ya' know what I mean. :)
Although, when he's performing he knows he has to come to a stop on the teeter-tooter while it flips over. Then if you're quick you can catch a picture of him before he's off again. I guess it qualifies as a plank of sorts.

Sorry to hear about Runt Arky, your new pup looks just like my late beagle KB (killer beagle). He liked to hunt rabbits so much he wore a sore on the tip of his nose. When on a hot scent he noticed nothing else, trailed one across the highway and got hit.

LBJ is just fine, it was her brother Runt who was stolen. Runt never liked to ride and when we went hunting off of the farm you had to keep a hold of him. He would bail out of an open window at 60 mph and never bat an eye. You would have thought that after the first time or two he would have learned, But nope! he just did not like riding.
LBJ on the other hand will ride any time the truck starts and is a good traveler. The new pup is now called "Woody" and is a blue blooded papered beagle. He will lay under the mill while sawing and chew on pieces of wood and bark. The problem is he goes out and gets them and drags them under the mill to chew on them. Needs to do it the other way around. By next fall he should be a terror on bunnies and tree rats.

Woody is coming right along. He is growing and learning. LBJ and he put a red tree rat up a walnut today and the thing could not jump to another tree. They worried that thing for hours till it started raining and we came home. There was a time or two I thought the tree rat was going to make a break for it. If the truck starts Woody and LBJ are in it. Good thing it is a extended cab.
Woody is one fine looking blue blood!

Tree rats are squirrels. We have grey squirrels and red or fox squirrels as well as black and flying squirrels. They are just rodents or rats that live in trees with long bushy tails. Love to hunt them and eat them. LBJ is a good sight hunter and can stay with them when they jump from tree to tree. It is real fun to watch the dogs work.

Runt was known as one of the best tree rat dawgs in the area so my guess is some one stole him. Have not seen hide nor hair of him. He was able to smell one from quite a ways off and trail the scent in the wind then walk to the tree that held the tree rat. Also was a good sight hunter. Once They treed in a large hickory and I could not find any thing but they would not leave. So looking through the scope I saw a ear and shot the limb. The tree rat jumped from the tree and I shot it about 3 trees over. Runt went back to the hickory and would not leave and kept barking. So I looked some more and found another tree rat hiding in a large fork and shot it out. Runt was ready to leave the tree then. I guess he could count how many he put up that tree.
my dog has a fine affinity for squirrels too, i've never hunted him. He's scared of thunder, so I'm sure he's gunshy too, poor guy.

The brown one,is my female Kenda
The black one is her son Flint.
Kenda will climb anything, ladders round bales Log piles. And she will ride anything she can squezze herself onto. Flint on the other hand likes to ride but he is much more laid back. He's also the sneaky one. Liek when I come in the house I have to make sure the screen door closes all the way, the little sneak will stick his paw in the door while its closing and wait till he thinks your out of site, then he pulls the door open and comes in. You hardley ever know he's around. His mother on the other hand has to be under your feet all the time.
If the think what I'm doing isn't interseting enough the go follow cousin around the farm, Both of them are afraid of the horses and the cows, Flint will sit at the gate and wait for the cows to come over, then he barks at them and they run away, He just sits there and waits sooner or later the cows come back and he barks again. He keeps this up till the cows get to the point where they just stand there. At that point he will come to the shop since the game is over.

Maya absolutely loves being outside. Today isn't a good day for her since it's raining and I won't spend any time out there with her (she doesn't like it out there by herself) :( She loves it when I'm milling, since she can steal all of the edgings and chew on them. Any time I mill walnut I have to keep her tied up since her favorite spot is the sawdust pile, and she takes a few bites now and again...she got real sick the first time she got into the walnut :( There's mice that like to nest in the cross bunks of the mill, so that's a favorite spot to sniff out :D

Someone my brother worked with had a litter of pups to get rid of. I saw them one day when they were three or four weeks old, and she picked me out. A few weeks later when I got her my whole world turned upsidedown. Her dad was a chocolate lab, and the mom was a heinz 57. Those mutts make nice pets. She's a little spunky...if she weren't so cute she probably wouldn't be around any more :D

I guess its OK to mention that I don't have a Log Dawg, but I have a big furry beast of a dog. He's a Bouvier De Flanders...but if I had a pile of logs, he would surely be there!! Has to be with me all the time! Love it!

Check out petfinders.com You can search for any kind of dog or cat in your area. I'd love to have a dog again but makes it harder to pick up and leave for a week or two. I make do with the neighbor's dogs instead. :)
Lost a friend:
One of my two log dogs, Baron, passed away yesterday evening. My niece and her boyfriend stopped in for a vist so we decided to go mushroom hunting. Of course the dogs wanted to come along. Baron was a bit over ten years old and negotiating the rugged terrain was getting to be difficult at best for him. In spite of that he insisted on following us out into the woods. Unfortunately he so exhausted himself I had to carry him the last quarter mile home. I said to my wife at the time 'one of us is likely to have a heart attack before this is over'. Barron weighed around 120# and it was all I could do to carry him about 50 yards on the treacherous terrain before I had to rest. We got him home and placed him on his bedding. He seemed to be recouperating but when we checked on him after dinner he was gone. Gonna miss that dog. :'( We buried him next to Smoke - our first black lab who lived to be 17.

Scooter is rather photogenic. He has his picture scattered all over the forum. I found out hes valuable! They call them designer dogs now. Our 6yo son Brendan is constantly getting into things, mostly because they get left around where he can get in to them ::). The other day, I was reviewing some pictures in the digital camera and discovered that he had taken a few dozen pictures around the house. Here are two.

My dog will climb through culverts.So far he's made it through everytime.Don't let Murf pick on Scooter's climbing harness.My Boo Boo has one too.He's not on a leash much,never around here and he chokes himself.Use to sound like he's coughing.The harness did the trick.My dog looks like Scooter.

Weighing in at 43 pounds, I am the proud papa of a beautiful baby boy!
He has his Mama's good looks, and his daddy's brawn.

A German Shephard/Chow/Akita mix pup that's one year old!
He's silent when he bops around the yard, but when he gets to chewin on his rawhide bone on the porch, it's like an earthquake! He shakes the WHOLE porch!
Hence, his name - Earthquake!
It seems that he has had some law enforcement training, is very well mannered, and loves to be right with me, especially in the truck!
I open the back slider window for him, and he sticks his head out - it looks really funny from the outside - like he's mounted on the wall.

And scary smart dogs. Many dogs obey commands but I think part of it is the inflection in your voice. I had a carpenter friend with one of these dogs. He could ask the dog, in a normal conversational tone, to bring him a particular tool and the dog would do it. I swear that dog understood english as well as you or I.
I had a blue heeler that looked alot like your dog DaveShepard. It was the smartest dog I ever had.
They are full of energy and smarts.
Only fault she had was that when the farmer neighbor planted crops in the spring she took great pleasure in chasing the row markers on the planter. I lived next to the field. I guess it was part of that heeling instinct.
She would love to ride on anything. She would ride on the fourwheeler seat either just in front of me or just behind me.
I was out with the camera this afternoon and got a shot of the Pup again. I could barely take any pics of the dogs, the point and shoot wouldn't make up it's mind fast enough, the dogs would always take off just before it was ready. ::) I need a DSLR to get these guys.

I had a female 30 years ago named MICKI, she was absolutely fearless. Had a horse kick her over five foot fence, she hit the ground layed a minute or so and ate the horses heels up. She had a litter of pups(5) and all except one was just like her. The fifth one always wanted to head rather than heel, I finally gave him to an old fellow that had hogs, he told me he was the best dog alive. smiley_furious3
I think this topic might get a little twisted..... but it's worth the risk. HE HE Personally I have Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, three as a matter of fact. My favorite was an old deadgrass named "Saw dog". He used to sit under my feet and get covered with dust. Never left my side, always in the way, but I do miss him like hell. Dogs are truly man's best friend. :)

That sounds like my wife' Pomeranian, supposed to be her dog, but, he goes with me every time the door is opened. reswire, that sounds like my Mountain Cur, Duke. Had him for 14 years, In the summer time when it was hot he would let the sawdust blow on him til there was just the outline of a dog there. He would snort to clean his nostrils after every pass and move nothing else.
Oh man ...... I need another dog, I wish I was home more but I might find one that could travel with me.
My dog "Buddy" is a bagle (basset/beagle). Someone had somehow lost him at the local fishing pond in town and word was he was about to get put down so I adopted him, and I'm sure glad I did. He won't clean house and can't cook worth a crap, but he's awful happy to see me every time I walk in the door. :D
He's generally right in the way when ever I'm around the house or out sawing and pretty much only knows a few things. Ball, Food and not to mess with the cat!

My dog "Chooch" is a German Shepard. I ask her if she wants to go to work & she gets all fired up & runs around the house. When we get to the mill she likes to lay in the sawdust, unless someone is willing to throw a stick.
"Shadow" ( my daughter named her that because she shadows you wherever you go) showed up one Sunday morning about 8 months ago as I was feeding the OWB for the drying room. I thought it was our old black lab that came down and I saw her out of the corner of my eye and I said "Hey black dog", which is what I called Aries the black lab. When I looked again it wasn't Aries, but a big black dog that looked like a black lab with a little greyhound thrown in. I tried to chase her off, but she ran a few feet and turned around and looked like the Dog from TV "Odie". All smiles and tongue hanging out. Shadow looked in good shape except she had no stomach. Looked like she hadn't eaten in a week. So I petted the dog and went and got a big bowl of dogfood. So I am her best friend. She goes to the mill and stays until bored and runs off to find something to chase.
Finds moles and kills them. A very good dog.
When she showed up it looked like she had just worn a collar. When we went to get her spayed, she was already fixed. Have no idea why someone would dump such a dog.
I somehow ended up with a mill / shop foreman that thinks the sawmill, wood shop, and the kiln is his personal condo. He is there every moment that I am, and sometimes he almost looks like he knows what is going on! Lab/Boxer mix. 72 pounds of love on four feet. If anything ever happened to him, Nancy would have my hide. Andy

WH_Conley,the wife's dog is a planned Pomeranian and Shihtzu. Got the long legs of a Pom so she can run. She has no courage. Won't chase a deer. She don't go far from the house. My other dog Dew would run all over the 170 acres here. I use to tell the grandkids never follow Dew,he knows the woods better than I do.

As much as I love Icey, Icey has always been her own dog. Unless you are doing something of interest to her, she goes and hangs by herself She doesn't get along with other dogs so that has limited what we can do together and where we can go. Beaner on the other hand (Harley) is my constant companion. He wants to be with me no matter where I am at or what I am doing. I really hate leaving the house any more without him. :)

What kind is your dog in the picture? He looks a lot like Sampson, my 13 lb Rat terrier who is my fishing and all around knock about buddy. I shot a nice doe with my bow a few weeks back and lost the blood trail so came home and got Sampson and went back to the trail. In all honesty I found the trail again and was doing good but Sampson finally figured out what we were doing and ignored the chipmunks and squirrels and was straining on his lead till we found her. She still had the arrow in her and he bayed at her till I finished her. His favorite thing to bark at is a big catfish in the bottom of the boat.

I'm a real dog person so I stopped to give it a little attention.
The girl said that the dog was looking for a forever home...
i said what was the problem. She said it belonged to her daughter and she went into the Army.
I ask what happened to it's missing leg and she said it lost it in a trap when it was very young.
I call my wife to ask if she wanted a little house dog and she said sure...

My wife has always been a big fan of German Shepherds and did not care for small dogs but I got Sampson a little over a year ago and the first time I let him in the house he went straight to her chair and won her over. Now when he comes in he runs to Becky then goes and sits in front of the refrigerator till she gets him whatever treat is in order today. He has her well trained. (I wish I was as successful as him.)
Looks to me like she's about to trim your fingernail back to the 2nd knuckle.

This thread reminds me of Ron White of Blue Collar Comedy team saying he had a dog (Bulldog I think) that ran away for 2-3 days. Ron said when his dog came home just to pith him off he took him for a walk.
We had an old cat, Rainbow, used to get mad and insulted. Kids brought home a rescued kitten one time and Rainbow left for several months and obviously stayed with someone else up the road. When she came home she was walking down the road meowing loudly so I opened the gate for her and my wife opened the door to let her highness in. The first thing she did was went straight to her litter box.
Beaner let's me sit where I want. Yesterday I came down with a bug and I feel miserable and he must know it. This is where he is at as I type this. He usually just piles on.

It gets exciting at times,
Nothing indoors, but we have Fiddle who absolutely loves to pester the dogs. He is the epitome of the old saying curiosity killed the cat, he has to be into everything you're doing all the time.
Hopefully we will not have another indoor cat. We have tried having a couple of barn cats. Plenty of mice, shrews and birds there for them to chase. Get them as a kitten and feed them there but they get older and find the house, make friends with the dogs and start roaming. Last one I saw several times back in the woods behind my house while deer hunting. Once he saw me and sat at the base of the ladder stand I was in and yaaowled for 20 minutes (which I can only speculate did not improve the deer hunting). Unfortunately coons and coyotes are rough on them and we no longer have one.
A few years back my son's family had a couple of litters of kittens at one time. Were about 5-6 weeks old when they watched a coon catch Snowball, a white kitten. Was pretty traumatic to the girls. After that DIL got my son to give her some more marksmanship lessons and he thinned the coon population a good bit.

We never let Boo-Boo up on the furniture. I at least would take a shower,but he would not. :D He followed me just about everywheres I went. He was a dirty dog.
Now we have Pumpkin and she sleeps with us. We need king size blankets on a queen size bed.She will sleep between us and take the blankets from us. ::)She does not follow me like Boo-Boo did.

Miss Dolly had a fix job a week ago, and could not leave the incision alone, she wound up with the cone of shame for a few days, hate it for her, but it is what it is,,
I just had the cat done. He acted like nothing had happened to him. ??? Next day he was up and around just fine.

When we go to visit, as soon as the door rattles, the house comes alive and when the door gets opened, we step aside and all 3 come out and get behind us and follow us into the house, then they've all got to say hello to us!

drobertson,On a happier note,I mentioned Boo-Boo,We use to kid about giving him half a bath. He would only be dirty from about the bottom of his belly down.I was walking around here with one of my friends and Boo-Boo. We both looked at Boo-Boo and watched him lower himself into the bog water. He was getting himself cooled off. Same way we put something cold on our forehead. The half a bath mystery was solved. The wife has a dog that does the same thing.

Dave, I'm really sorry to hear that. Great dogs really enrich our lives and it really hurts to lose one.
I don't know what I'll do when Shea crosses the Rainbow Bridge. She is 7 now and slowing down a bit, but still can be pretty feisty.

Not really a Log Dog,but I did ruin her. The wife wanted a little cutez dog. She had some operation that kept her house bound for a month. She just got this dog and guess who had to take the dog for walks and take care of her? She will follow me some. And get dirty. Just not too far from the house. ::)If Pumpkin does get too far from the house she won't lose sight of me. The dog in reply #117 knew the woods better than me. He would go into the woods with me and chase stuff. Might even find his way back home,if not much was going on. The wife's dog has no courage. I was on the tractor and saw 3 deer,she ran up to them barking and the deer stood there. Pumpkin did not know what to do,so she ran back to me. :D
Here she is with her fall coat on. She will stay outside all day,even when I am working. We put a pillow on the front steps and she will lay there by the hour. Even at 10°,with her coat on.

I also forgot to mention she is a Tomboy. Even picks up one leg to go to the bathroom. Take her for a walk and she heads for where all the males dog has been. Smells,goes a little and onto the next spot and smells and goes alittle. Repeat 7-8-9-10 times.

Just saw a red heeler today I always liked the looks of those dogs.
Guys in light of all the displaced animals in the Houston area I would urge anyone interested in a dog to adopt. My niece has 7 dogs and they are forced out of their house leaving their beloved animals literally out in the cold.One is a beautiful German Shepard that is well trained. All of the kids here at Tule Peak Timber are adopted and are absolutely wonderful. A lot of dogs need help. Rob

Grew up on a dairy farm and always had a dog, usually mutts but always a good friend. Farm is long gone now, part subdivision, part golf course but still always have had a dog.

My normal knock around buddy is Sampson my 13 lb Rat Terrier. He loves to ride on the 4 wheeler with me, ride in the truck with me, goes to the flea market to socialize with his other doggie buddies there and he loves to ride in the boat. He loves to bark at a catfish but not bass or bream or other fish. He has treed a few squirrels and helped me track down bow shot deer and such. He is real shy around others and only my wife and I can pet him - well except for my 2 y/o grandson who he loves to lick and get hugs and such - I guess Sampson is not intimidated by Quinn's small size. He is not a brave dog which may be a good survival trait. He loves to climb on the logs and big rocks around the mill and to leave his footprints on my lumber.

This is Pumpkin,the wife's dog.We call her Pumpkin because we got her in the fall. She is just about worthless. Will not come to us,when we call her. She is not much of a watch dog. Not much of a log dog. If she does fellow me into the woods,she does not stay long. The only thing she is really good for,is she goes out with me to check the OWB. She don't miss many of them times. ;D First thing in the morning she is ready to go. She is outside now,with a jacket and a pillow at 10°. She will chase squirrels and if she happens to be by the stone wall she will sniff out a wood chuck. I have noticed she has slowed down alot last year, She would fellow me into the fields and hang around the old farm house and wait for me to go back to the house.
