Title: Coffee??
Post by: Magicman on December 08, 2015, 08:33:50 AM
The second cup, how much do you drink?  Black or doctored?  Mine is straight up with no sweetener or dairy.

When I worked for the man, there was the morning and afternoon coffee breaks.  Now it's my cup in the morning after breakfast and rarely any after that.  Sundays are different because I generally sip a cup in the afternoon.

Coffee and the forestry forum go together. I have a cup while I read the forum before breakfast. Another cup with breakfast. We have one of those fancy K-cup machines, I get two good cups of coffee from one of the little foil packets...

I won't start my day without it,straight off the pot no milk or sugar. It was a basic food group when I was on the road for the logging company, minimum 6-8 cups a day, but I paid for it with stomach problems. Now two in the morning and seldom any after that.

When I worked for the man(some say I was against him from the start), I would have a cup at home to get my heart started, then pick up a 20oz cup on the way to work.  I had my own coffee maker in my office and would kill 2 pots during the day.  Picked up beer on the way home.  I was a real health nut.  :D :D

Now I'm down to 3 or 4 cups in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Thinking about installing a rollup door in the spare room so I can load the beer in with the forklift.  ;)

We have a Mr. Coffee, $20 coffee maker that makes 12 cups according to whats on the pot. My cup must hold more that that.  Tammy takes some out to put in her creamer in the morning, and I drink the rest, trying not to drink any past say 2pm or so. I drink mine black. 3 scoops in the filter for the pot is the strength.  Those pots last about 6 months and they slow down. We clean it a couple times with vinegar, 6then chuck it and go in the other room and get a new one. Next time we are at Wally world, we buy another spare.

In the summer 2 cups in the morning and 1 with lunch, as it gets colder I drink it all day and usually 1 after dinner. 1/2 caff black, no more high test these days. The K cups are fun but expensive, coffee from a perc pot is the best tasting but hotter that Hades.  smiley_devil

I always (most times) have my coffee straight up, nothing added, but on rare occasions, I'll add a good helpin' of instant cocoa!

My day starts with coffee and the FF for about an hour, then I'll migrate to the kitchen and fix my eggs, bacon & toast, and have a second cup of coffee.

If I hang around the house, I'll usually have another couple of cups!

I used to drink my coffee black but I read some articles about it being hard on your stomach (can help ulcers form) and teeth (making em brown) so I add a spot of whole milk, and maple syrup in the colder months (not aunt jemimah's either :D )

2 mugs black each morning. For some reason the "official" size for coffee markings on the pot are for 6 oz cups while most mugs are 12 oz so if the pot says 8 cups you will only get 4 mugs.

I figure that back in the day, they didn't have as much coffee, so they had smaller servings.  Now in the McDonald's era where coffee is plentiful, they started making bigger mugs but the measurements are still the same.  Just a rough guess, but I can almost guarantee 1/32" accuracy.  ;D

I make mine in a SS perk on the stove. 4 cups of water, 3 tablespoons grinds. I buy a brand by a national store chain here. I don't buy some of the cheaper stuff like Maxwell, no taste to it. Add a tiny bit of sugar (maybe 1/3 of a teaspoon) and a good dose of cereal cream (10 % MF). No half and half for me (oil and sugar slosh?) I'd rather have the real stuff. :D  Anyway, 2 - 3 cups from Royal Albert fine china (tastes a lot better) in the morning with breakfast and that's it for the day. ;) Besides we have lots of china cups between mother and uncle collecting for 40 or 50 years. LOL

When I was working for the man, I had a big mug, probably 16oz.  I would drink a couple cups in the morning.  I was having trouble staying awake at work so I drank more.  I was up to 7 or 8 mugs a day and this was extra strong French Roast.  I would dose off at home if I sat down.  Turned out I had Sleep Apnea.  Got a CPAP and now I don't drink coffee anymore! :D

You wanna real buzz before you go to sleep?  Take some coffee grounds, put em in your lip like dip, but drink the spit.  It kinda gets all over the place, unless you wrap it in something like cheesecloth, but it'll wake you right up, and about an hour later you'll come down and sleep like a rock.   ;)

I don't mean this as a put down but I don't understand those that don't drink coffee.  I drink it from the minute that I wake to when I go to bed.  One of my fondest memories is x-mas at grandmas house and trying to carry the coffee filled to the brim to the adults with out spilling any.  My wife continually yells at me for the little spots of coffee I have dripped in our house so I must have never gotten good at keeping it in the cup but it is still one of my fond memories from child hood.

I can drink coffee while I am drinking beer.  I don't understand flavored coffee and drink it black.  I like it with a little milk in it but am too lazy so drink black.  I get really bad headaches if I get busy enough that I forget to drink some for too long.

I remember as a kid, staying up all night around a camp fire so we could check limb lines and trot lines every 2 hours.  Lots of coffee.

I hardly ever drink water, soda.  I drink milk with food and then coffee all day.  I still love some that don't even drink it but don't pretend to understand them.
Cheers
gww

The Cadenhead boys must like their coffee.  Tom drank black coffee from the time he got up until the time he went to bed. You rarely saw Tom without a mug of coffee in his hand or nearby.  He drank so much coffee that his wife, Gayle, bought him a two pot coffee maker.  Tom was buried with a coffee mug in his hand.  I have and still use Tom's insulated coffee mug he used at his mill. I use it in my truck. Now, this boy fixes 12 cups of coffee each morning. My wife, Donna, will drink 1 or 2 mugs and I'll drink the rest, which equates to about 8 to 10 cups.  I rarely drink anymore coffee unless I go to a café to meet a friend. Then it'll be another 5 or 6 mugs.

Now, most of you boys say you dring "x" number of cups of coffee. I'll bet that every one of you drink your coffee from a mug, which holds about 2 cups of coffee.  A cup is 8 ounces and I don't think I know  anyone that drinks only 8 ounces of coffee in the morning.  :o

My coffee grinder has duck tape on it.. but I've had it for over 15 years.  Use to drink all day long.  Dark roast.. strong enough to walk on.. almost sweet.. CoffeeMate.  I make mud.

Try this sometime..  take paper filter w/ coffee and use metal twisty tie to make teabag.. put in the pot until boiling.. I let it boil some.. use spoon to squish on it to make coffee stronger.  Makes a very rich tasting coffee.. makes house smell like coffee too.

Now I want some coffee..

I used to a drink 2 24oz cups with half and half for color from the local gas station everyday.  They've got a good Bunn coffee machine and they keep it up.  I still drink coffee if we have breakfast out but that's it..  White Monster Zero Ultras have replaced other forms of caffeine for me.  I probably drink more of them than I should.  They are refreshing ;D  No caffeine after 5PM these days.  I used to be able drink a pot of coffee and go to bed.  Not anymore.

Black,2-3 in the morning with my eggs and the FF.

 :D

Add one more thing to the very short list of documented things that thecfarm is willing to consume!  ;D

I love coffee, but I got spoiled by local coffee shop here in the area. They roast their own and sell wholesale to high ends stores and restaurants. They're way better than *$  [some of you will get that] and hardly more expensive. So they get me hooked on these highly customized special roasts of special beans from Kenya and Ethiopia especially. When it's their stuff, I drink it black and stiff as gumbo and about as hot as it is outside Magicman's house in July, but not much hotter than that. Otherwise I burn my fragile tongue.  :-\

But at work, they have free coffee burned dirt, and that I have to have creamer in to make it taste less miserable. Then I typically have 2-3 of those cups per 8-hour shift.

I like what we call cofflate just every now and then though. Its hot chocolate made with coffee instead of milk or water.
We like coffee so much around here that I decided to attempt a different dessert with coffee... COFFEE PIE!!! It may sound weird but it is really really good. I made the creamer just vanilla milk and a bit of cinamon, mixed it with the coffee,  thickened it with corn starch and poured it in the crust. Coffee jelly in a pie crust may sound weird but it is definiteley worth a try. ;D

Coffee jelly in a pie crust may sound weird but it is definiteley worth a try. ;D

Once in a while, especially during the Winter, I'll pour a cup of coffee (I normally drink it black) and add a heaping spoonful of instant hot chocolate.   smiley_thumbsup

cold weather 6 to 8 cups a day, warm weather 2 to 3 and I make up for the caffeine deficiency with Pepsi. Now a days I roast my own small batches and grind a cup at a time, light roast from free trade beans I get from a good friend who does missionary work in S America.

I started drinking coffee at about 5 years old, my grandma would make me milk coffee from hot milk, nescafe instant and a teaspoon of sugar, dipping day old homemade bread until it was gone was breakfast before school. I think the kick helped me deal with the nuns at school. I can think of lots of things I'd give up before I'd give up coffee. Caffeine, cholesterol and calories, the three basic food groups.

Couple of months ago I discovered a local shop that imports Jamaican Blue Mountain. They roast it fresh every day, then ship it out. (primarily an e-commerce thing). They even have single estate beans, which is similar to single-malt scotch, and priced about the same. I'm still working my way through the entire selection before I decide which I like best. Might have to go back and try some I've already tried just to refresh my taste buds. I figure I'm still young, I've got time.

Not as much fun as some other Jamaican imports I experimented with in my younger days, but the statute of limitations has passed on that.

However, after my coffee, I read novels like Arkady Renko mysteries, Girl with a Pearl Earing, Lonesome Dove and a ton of others. And while I'm reading, I'm snacking on Sesame Sticks, Cheezits and other fattening food. My belly would look better if I was still drinking beer. :D

My MIL was a coffee fanatic and could instantly tell the difference between coffee brands.  She preferred to brew a pot, let it cool, and then keep it in the frig.  She would then pour a cup and microwave it.  She claimed that it was much better.

No, in the mug, just a pinch.  I read about it in Hunt for Red October - drinking coffee the Navy way and I had to try it  :)
Title: Re: Coffee??

Just a pinch....no more.  Either way, before brewing or after does not matter, but measuring is easier by the cup after brewing.  There is a chemical basis for this practice. The Na+ ion (salt) diminishes bitterness by interfering with the transduction mechanism of that taste. The effect occurs below the level at which the salty taste would be registered.

We put a pinch in the grounds as that is all a whole pot needs here. We have learned that this is especially important if you have chlorinated water (city water) piped to your home or if your well water is of lower quality. That pinch of salt corrects a lot of flavour problems and leaves the coffee to be enjoyed.

At least a pot a day, less what the wife drinks with her half and half.  Fresh ground dark roast beans straight up, no cream or sugar.  Pinch of salt in the grounds when brewing if I make it, maybe or maybe not if the wife makes it.  The salt helps cut the bitterness, old man I used to work with taught me that trick. I'll drink it off and on all day and evening.  So far, never a problem with the caffeine keeping me up at night.

In Reply #15, I showed the coffee maker that I have been using that uses a coffee packet which cost 26 cents, but the maker is not easily adaptable to use loose coffee.

I recently saw this coffee maker and decided to give it a try because it uses loose coffee.

This is also a single cup maker and cost $20.  It is very small and does not take up much counter space.

It also has a permanent filter which works well and cleans easily.

I am using my recently "inherited" Yeti cup because there ain't no way I would pay that much for a coffee cup, but it is crazy how long it will keep the coffee hot.

I used my wife's knock off version of a Yeti while she was gone one weekend, DanG thing kept my tea cold all afternoon in a 110 degree tractor cab, went to Bomgaars for twine the next day and spent 30 some odd dollars on my own.  Asked wife about hers when she got back, yep it was not a Yeti it was a 10 dollar Walmart special  :-\.  Then someone at the salebarn I work at decided they needed my Yetti worse than me  >:(.  But they do work great.

I did a bit of unofficial testing/timing.  Using a Tervis cup, which is plastic and double insulated, the last sip after 15 minutes was cold.  Using the Yeti cup, the last sip after 45 minutes was still hot.

MM, can't believe the pages this has run.  Here's mine.  Mr. Coffee, $16.88 one button on/off Wmart.  12 cup.  Morning after, enough to make a cup of left over, 2 minutes in the microwave.  In the mean time, pots in the sink filling.  Six scoops of Value Size Great Value Classic Roast, Medium Rich & Smooth.  380 Cup size/3 lbs.  My cup I ran in the microwave hold just under 2 cups.  I add the yellow pretend sweetener from Wmart. w/Wmart powder creamer.  Yes I use throw away filters.  Takes about 10 minutes to run the 12"cups claimed of brew.  By my measure of almost 2 cups, 6 real cups or mugs of coffee to the beaker.  Though not included filter/sweetner/creamer close to .13 cents for almost two cups of my style flavored coffee.  I usually drink three cups, wife two which leaves enough for the morning rebrew in the microwave while I prep the next pot. Eat your heart out Ripoffbucks. :D :D :D
Title: Re: Coffee??

It's a drip coffee pot like a Mr. Coffee, and as simple as she can find. 12 "cups" (I'm pretty sure they mean 6 oz. cups, not standard) with 4 level scoops (don't know the standard there) of Folgers or Maxwell House or whatever she buys.

I get 1 mug per pot; she gets the rest simply because she's faster than I am. Neither of us can stand scorched coffee, so it goes into two insulated carafes (sp?) as soon as the pot's done. Whoever gets the last mug, starts another pot. My mug is an insulated thing that my son got for me. It keeps the coffee hot enough to drink for at least as long as it takes me to drink it. She has an identical mug but rarely uses it -- prefers ceramic. Black; no doctoring.

About 24 oz for me before breakfast; about 1 qt for her. Neither of us without a cup for long throughout the day and night. Probably 5 - 8 pots per day.

:o I would be like Elmer Fudd on helium if I drank that much coffee. When I was on the road a lot it was a basic food group but I had to back off due to health issues, it accelerated a congenital tremor. The office girls bought me 20 pounds of Costa Rican beans so that's all I've been drinking. Normally I buy Folgers country roast.
Weekdays and Saturday I use a old style percolator. A full basket of grind and 10 cups of water. 1/2 and 1/2 with a bit of raw sugar.
Sunday's I use a 32 oz press and let the grind steep for 10 minutes.

Percolators are where it's at and I prefer a stove top one over electric and campfire over that. Having a double expresso right now in the biz lounge on my way home. This is kinda new for me. Normally I would be swigging whiskey. Two days ago I was heading home and doing just that. At some point and time while heading toward the plane I toppled over and smacked my head. Ended up in the hospital and now I am not so proudly sporting a black eye and several stitches. I've come to the conclusion that I have a problem and it's time for a change. Coffee it is for me. There, I've said it. First step.

I thought this little ditty was cute regarding coffee:   As I sat down one evening,
   was in a small café
A forty year old waitress to me
   these words did say

I see you that you are a logger
and not just a common bum
'Cause nobody but a logger
stirs his coffee with his thumb

My lover he was a logger,
   there's none like him today
Well if you'd pour whiskey on it
well he'd eat a bale of hay

He never used a razor
   to shave his horny hide
He'd just drive them in with a hammer
then he'd bite them off inside

My lover he came to see me
   was on a freezing day
He held me in a fond embrace
   that broke three vertebraes

Well he kissed me when we parted
so hard that he broke my jaw
And I could not speak to tell him
   he forgot his mackinaw

I saw my lover leaving
   sauntering through the snow
Well going grimly homeward
   at forty eight below

Wll the weather tried to freeze him
   it tried its level best
At a hundred degrees below zero
why, he buttoned up his vest

It froze clean through to China
and it froze to the stars above
And at a thousand degrees below zero
   it froze my logger love

And so I lost my lover
and to this café I come
And here I wait till someone
stirs his coffee with his thumb

I am still using a bun.  I have patched a few of them.  My uncle called them up and talked/griped at them cause you can't even buy that little washer that goes bad on all buns and so now he refuses to own one cause he says they know about the problim and it happens on all buns but they won't even make the part av availible.  I have patched a few of them with short term fixes.  I keep it on 24 hours a day.

Magic, I can not speak for anyone else but no, I do not have revolving doors on my bathroom but I do have a pretty good patch of dead grass and when the wether is just right it pays to be standing up wind from it ;).
Cheers

I've cut back on my coffee usage, I make a 6 cup (half a typical coffee pot) but still use the same amount of coffee. I have a cup or 2 in the morning and call it good. I'm still on the Folgers black silk, columbian, or french roast. As always with a little milk or cream. I switch every time I buy it.
Today I tried some Yuban that a relative had brewed up today, with a splash of fresh Dexter milk it was pretty good. Nice for a change I guess. :)

I am usually a "one cup" a day guy but with this cold weather it seemed appropriate to double my intake.   ;D

MM little embarassed to have a yeti there lol lol hey if its good and it works who gives a turkey..snap-on sells tools for crazy money but they work well, so many people buy em, same with wm.  Point is you pay for quality and I ain’t gonna judge a man on a coffee mug come to think of it I’d have never known it was soo expensive unless it was brought to me attention.

I’m trying the salt in the grounds this morning.  Hoping that’ll do it.

The excessive coffee caught up with me so switched to tea...whoa, the pain.  :-X So, try to only have coffee 1 or 2 days a week.

The Mrs. has tried to complicate coffee. It's a simple thing with zen-like qualities when kept at a basic level. First it was a K-cup machine--that ended up clogged, giving me 1/3 cup. She cleaned it, etc. blah blah--ended up sailing off the 2nd story balcony.

The next was a machine that "will do it all...". Place the beans in it with water and it will auto grind, shoot the coffee into a filterless contraption. Ended up clogging the grindings and overflowing and/or a pot full of grounds. It too sailed off the deck one early morning.  (can I even explain how much joy this gave me!)?  :D

Simplicity is where it's at for me in the matter: ground coffee, put scoops into personal size french press, let sit a few minutes, push handle down, pour--great taste, no BS, works EVERY single time. First experienced this at Egg Restaurant in Brooklyn...simple kinda place with great/wholesome food!

I still prefer my percolator and a stove top percolator even more than the electric. The stove top over a camp fire is another step ahead of that.

A french press is without a doubt my favorite, my 1 qt (single serving  ;D) press is a good friend indeed.  Also agree on ditching all the fancy machines.  Now the next trick is getting light roasted African beans into it.   I've got a good supplier of Kenyan AA and for the price it is a *DanG good wake up.  I have to stop about noon though and it is hard to find good decaf.

Counter Culture (for all you coffee snobs) is the best I've had but at $18 for 12 oz it is an expensive cup.  I am not a fan of Columbian or Brazil but the CC East African coffees are the best ever and after 25 years of being a coffee fanatic I think I'm confident with that statement.

More often than not, 1 24 oz cup in the morning. I make it black, but if somebody comes in with a small one that has some milk or cream, I don't turn it down. I make the large one decaf. DanGdest thing, the caffeine does something with the medicine I take, and I don't feel right. Later in the day I can swing a hi-test or two

K-cup coffee maker...When it gets stingy and makes 1/2 cup or less per brew, and the recommended de-scaling does no good,  here's a gotcha...pull the removable filter from the water container..Underneath is a round knob with 3 stainless phillips head screws. remove them and pull out the plastic knob. Inside that is a fine wire mesh filter, can't clean it without removing the assembly. Mine was badly clogged. Made a world of difference.

Starbucks medium roast is good but I cannot handle the dark. I need to get another percolator, basket went missing from the last one. Karen wouldn't drink perc but it is still my favorite.

Tea for me with breakfast just  touch of sugar (our tea makes most folks coffee look weak) then black coffee at the office. Two 20 oz mugs a day.

Years ago, I read a report that people who drink 8 or more cups of coffee a day have a longer, stronger, and more satisfying sex life than other groups of coffee drinkers. I can attest to the validity of the claim.  :)

First step.

I have not yet lain my demon down but have somewhat come to terms with it. I have a glass of wine with my meal when I fly but not drinking to drunken stupidity any more.  This said as I sit in the airport having coffee.
