Wanted Hardwoods for firewood in MO
« on: January 19, 2006, 12:28:13 PM »
I Live in Kingsville MO, we run a firewood business, and we'd like to process 1500 cords for next winter.  We are constantly buying wood.  wew look for logs or 18" cuts, must be 4" - 24" in diameter.  Prefer oak, ash, and hickory in that order.  We may pickup or will take deliveries.  We have a s/s with grapple for umloading.  Let me know if any of you have any wood to sell.  We are also looking for places to cut.  Let  me know....

I see that you have Hickory on the bottom of the list yet its the highest BTU value of the woods mentioned.  Why is Hickory the least of the three your looking for?

Dont know if you could use Slab wood from the mills but I bet it would sure be a great way to save time and energy and be profitable for both parties.

Hickory spits and sparks when you open the stove door.  Slabs are mostly bark and don't burn as clean. Plus, they are a lot of work to run through a processor.

Walnut makes good firewood but it also spits and sparks.

Honestly, people want oak..  That is why it's at the top of my list.  The majorit of the wood we will sell will be bundled, and sold at gas stations.  These people aren't in the wood for the highest btu values, they hear that oak is great firewood, and that's what they want.  I own a tree service, so I come across all different types of wood.  I had a decent amount of walnut this past year, and it did burn well.  I basically do what I can to sell, if they like oak better, I look for more oak.  If they wanted all hickory, I'd find a bunch of hickory..  I honestly sell a mix most of the time, but like predominently oak for the bundles.  I sell everything I cut, but ususally as a mix by the cord, these people are obviously more interested in the type of wood.  I am interested in looking at some slabs, as the bundles wood is split pretty little.  You're right, I don;t want a ton of bark, but people do like to see some bark, that  way they know it's firewood, not lumber scraps.  Let me know what you all have.
