CHERRY FIGURED GUNSTOCK BLANK "WANTED"
« on: December 31, 2005, 03:16:49 PM »
This little search I have been conducting on the Internet is killing me.

I want a dry black cherry blank from the eastern US to be made into a rifle stock.  The blanks needs to be 8 inches on the wide end, 3 inches on the small end, 34-37 inches long and 2 1/2 -3+ inches thick.  These are minimum specs. I want as much figure as I can find, especially in the BUTT AREA (WIDE END) OF THE BLANK.

Can anyone help point me towards a dealer.  The blank needs to be dry and aged would be preferred.  The below image gives you an idea of the shape of the blank needed in case my specs were confusing.

That'll be a tough one. I have figure cherry but only up to 2-2.25" It kills me to slice the good stuff that thick. Reid

I will check my stash today and let you know.  I commonly cut cherry to 12/4 but I think Curlywoods bought all I had dried a few months ago.

I think Tiger-Hunt is coming through with wood, but I needed to keep my options open.  I really am looking for high grade cherry such as this:

I am not necessarily looking for crotch figure, but I will not turn down a solid piece.  The one thing about Dunlap and Tiger-Hunt that I am interested in, and hoping they can find my wood, is that they guarantee the wood against defect internally.  If an internal flaw or check exists they will replace the blank.

I will give them a try.  Most of thier wood appears to be muzzleloader size which will not work for my project.

I have at least 3 miles of hedge rowes full of Cherry trees. Most over 15inches in Diameter, some
actually very large. They are not very tall. Might get one log before they branch out. My bet
is they are not the best quality for the loggers to bother with...what about things like gun stocks?
Bet there is plenty of "figure" Is it worth taking one down to see whats inside? Any local in the
CNY area who would understand to best approach to dealing with these old cherries?

That actually sounds like the wood most of the guys do cut for stocks.  It isnt the true straight tree it is the wrinkled barked tree with swelling stumps.

I might be.  I really depends on the figure.  I need a blank that is layed out for the grain structure flow through the stock of the rifle and also having as much figure as I can possible find in cherry.  It is the Holy search.  If you can post pictures when you have some.  the problem is they tell me less than 1% of the logs have what I am looking for.

I have some that I cut last summer and stickered. Cut at 2.75 thick x random widths, not yet cut into blanks. Will not be ready til at least Aug, was over 10 yrs in log before sawing into blank stock thickness. If you have not found any before then I will check figure as I unstack the pile.
logging small time for years but just learning how,  2012 36 HP Mahindra tractor, 3point log arch, 8000# class excavator, lifts 2500# and sets logs on mill precisely where needed,  Peterson ATS upgraded to WPF mill, maple syrup a hobby that consumes my time. looking to learn blacksmithing.
