Red Elm for shingles
« on: April 26, 2007, 05:40:12 PM »
Does anyone know if Red Elm would make good roofing shingles??? We're constructing a log structure (Block House) and have access to some nice Red Elm logs.
I grew up around logging but chose to be a heavy equipment mechanic for several years. Later in life my interest changed so my cousin and myself went into logging on our own in 1988.

Forest Lab rates elms as low or slightly decay resistant. http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fplrn/fplrn153.pdf
It sure would have to be sawn shingles cause making splits would be impossible.

You will play DANG splitting the elm.  That is, if you were going to split them out.  Elm don't split real keen.
