latest accomplishment (SOLVED: avocado)
« on: October 07, 2009, 02:35:52 PM »
My wife gets irritated at me with all the stuff I try to grow and propagate - particularly native hardwoods.  However, she is happy about this one.

I got this thing to germinate without any special treatment.  I simply covered it with good quality compost and lightly spritzed it with water from a small compressed air sprayer every day for a few weeks.  I had two others but my stupid gray squirrels decided this looked like something good to eat.

This is from a seed source found in the produce section of the grocery store.  Any ideas as to what it is?

You have quite the green thumb there. I germinated grapes from store bought grapes. I planted them down by the garden. They have been growing there unattended to for 20 years. They do flower, but frost hits before they are much bigger than a pea. They are the sweet red grapes. They are more or less weeds. We do have native wild grapes out along the river, but they are sour as all get out and no one bothers with them much unless they are making jelly I suppose.
Move'n on.

try grafting your store boughts to some of the wild stock. Might  be interesting.
