Just another day in Paradise
« on: July 18, 2018, 11:51:57 PM »
I figured its about time I started my own milling thread. Everyone please feel free to post in this thread.

So Western PA has been extremely rainy this year. This week has been no different.
I came out to the mill yard yesterday after 4.25 inches of rain in about 36 hours to find this

Luckily there was no damage to the lumber. So I took five minutes and got it cleaned up

I set it aside to be sawn into firewood later and got back to sawing and finished the 4x17 beams I was working on

Very nice. I have equipment envy, yours is bigger than mine. I wanted a skytrack but couldn't find one in my price range that wasn't old and ragged out or had a ton of hours. We have had the opposite problem here in west Michigan  hot and humid with little to no rain in weeks. I'm working in a dust bowl over here.

There are definitely days I could use more muscle in the lifting dept . Today for example I had to split a stack of walnut that my bobcat wouldn't lift. I could get it to lift about 2ft but no more. I made a flat stack, no stickers 5ft x 4ft of 11 and 12ft 5/4 and had to scramble to split it so I could get it to the grader in time to get a check this week. My equipment has been pretty good so far.  The mill has had some bugs but with the help of the forumites and woodmizer it seems to be running smooth now. I had some intermittent problems that seem to have been solved with a new ECU. Nothing that's kept me from running, just some hiccups now and then. Anybody who ever turned wrenches knows it's the intermittent problems that are the hardest to solve. When something is flat out broken it's usually pretty easy to diagnose.  The edger has already saved me a ton of time . I don't know how the gas ones are for power but the diesel doesn't even sound like its breaking a sweat feeding it 5/4 walnut or 4/4 hickory and hard maple.

well a little more than half. That slab pile is stacked 18' high. It needs to get cold out so I can move some of it!

Today was an almost wide head day!
I maxed my mill out. The customer wanted a live edge slab from his log.

Got that done and it started raining again.
And I didn't feel like getting soaked bucking logs so I realigned my laser that has been a tad off.

I believe I got this idea from @ElectricAL
It is the quickest most effective way I've found.

Then I got the Bibby attachment permanent on my mill

It really speeds up blade changes.

I sell them cheap for firewood.
I sell them bundled just as they are
And precut by the pick up load.
My slab cutting rack and a 3' bar make short work of it.

I'm finally getting some logs in now. It's been so wet here I have not been able to get logs in for a couple months. My stash was getting really low.
Now I'm getting hammered. I had three loggers contact me this week.

I'll be getting a triaxle load in tomorrow.

Nice rack! I need to build myself something like that. I have been sliding them off my mill into a pile and using the grappler on my bobcat to pile them into a mountain of mess. Really need to do something about that.

Sawed a bunch of live edge slabs the other day. I've been having more and more requests for them.
Anyone ever saw apple?
This was my first time. Not sure how they will dry. It was either slabs or firewood.
And I didn't feel like splitting firewood :D

It was hot and humid but it wasn't raining so I took advantage of it. I picked some of the smaller logs out for 1x10's

When that shed was built it was for a lt30.
And it was only going to be a hobby. I was only going to have to shovel sawdust once a year. Well things changed now I saw full time. I don't wanna know how many tons of sawdust Ive shoveled.

Ever have one of those days?
Seems I couldn't get nothen accomplished today.
I had an order for some 2x8x18
And some 1x10x10

The 18 foot log went crazy on me and I had to dig another out.

And 2 of the 10 foot logs were full of shake.

But hay....just another day in Paradise :)

Thanks Peter. I'm aware. There was a big ugly knot that I didn't want in the face of every board. I knew it was going to go sideways on me but I didn't think it would go that much. I left the can't an inch wide to edge out the crook. But that wasn't enough.
He is going to use them as runners on a hay wagon so a little crook wouldn't be an issue. But 4" :o I don't think he would be happy with that. I know I wouldn't.

I've been swamped with orders. Things looked like they might slow down a little and I could finally get started on my sharpening shed!

Nope. had a guy roll in with a couple loads of nice ash he wants sawn. He says he has about 5000 feet down and ready to bring over. It's been a good year for me
I guess I'll just keep buying blades if I don't get my equipment up and running ;D

Your land looks similar to mine as far as having to carve space out if the hills. Thankfully my ground is mostly sand so not much mud. I do get some areas of liquified sand though. It looks solid but when you step in it ya sink up to your calf. It's what we call mud season in Michigan right now it goes from October until June most years. There is generally a few ice seasons mixed in between as well. The key here is to flatten out the ruts right before the ground freezes or else your stuck dealing with lumpy frozen ground for a couple months.

Just a little soggy! :D
The ytd precipitation for here is just over 57 inches so far. It has been non stop rain here.

I've had mud since last November. Usally I'll smooth things up before it freezes. Last winter it never really froze here.
It's just been mud mud mud.

I only got my hole dug because it didn't rain for 36 hours prior.  8) it was nice not having a day and a half of rain!

But they go for a pretty penny usually.  I actually scooped one up yesterday at a decent price.  1991 Lull 644.  She needs a little TLC but overall a decent machine and it will serve me well.

yea. the ones I keep seeing start about 23k. I can't justify that. I think I will get a 3.5 ton mini excavator. it will be more versatile for me. I already have 28 hp Kubota with loader so that works ok. just need to build a grapple for it.

All the walls aren't even up and there's already stuff hanging on the walls :D

It was kinda slow going today. I left all my wood piles uncovered last night and then got snow/rain/ice last night. Then it warmed up a little and made a really muddy mess. Sorry no progress pics today. it was snowing pretty good when I quit for the day.

Got any pics?
Here is one from where she was sitting.  Same style as yours with the main carriage that slides as the first stage of the boom.  It does have the tilt head so I am going to make or find a grapple for it and use that hydraulic feature to keep from chasing logs around.  Needs a tire, foam filled of course, but other than that it's just some small stuff here and there to deal with.  5,xxx hours so for the age not bad at all.

Looks good for sure.  PA here is my new lift. Changed the filters today - boy that woke her up for sure!!

I think I am going to re-plumb the joysticks so the boom up down and fork tilt are on the same stick, and cariage out / squirt boom are on the other stick. Not sure why they were not set that way to begin with.

Southside, in my experience with them you want to be able to raise/lower and boom in/out at the same time in many situations. Hence them being on the same stick. Allows smoother operation.
But if some other configuration works better for you, give it a try.

Thanks MM. I'm actually using up a bunch of lumber that I've had laying around that was not that great of quality that I wouldn't sell to customers but hated to just pitch it.

Southside
You will love the new machine.
Thats how my machine is plumbed. I have found it handy to be able to boom in and down or vise a versa at the same time.

6,000 lbs when pulled in, 1,500 when fully extended with the carriage all the way forward.  She actually paid for herself today.

This morning I could not find a first calf heifer that never ventures far so I went looking for her, we have had so much rain this year and even more lately.  Well that gal found a new spring hole that I have walked over many times in wet conditions and never had a problem, she was sunk to her neck.  I went to check on her and on her left side I could stand on the surface while sinking in maybe a few inches, walked to the other side and WHAM, I went down to my waist with one leg, complete liquification of the ground.  My excavator might have been able to reach in that far, but getting it down there would have been an issue and I don't think she would have made it between some trees so I would have had to deal with that and I didn't have time to waste.  So I went and grabbed the Lull, drove it right between the trees and up to what I knew was solid ground, extended the carriage and boom most of the way out there, grabbed a couple 4" straps and made a sling around the poor girl, had to get into the mud up to my chest to make it happen but she was very cooperative.  Took a couple of lift and withdraw the boom moves along with re-adjusting the sling but I got her up onto solid ground.  I do have an "Upsy Daisy" but there was no way to get that on her as deep as she was.  After a minute of letting her stand there I un did the harness and she slowly walked out of there and went right to grazing, been walking and eating all day ever since so I think she is fine.  I did throw a horse blanket on her to help keep her warm, the mud is not our normal red clay, more of a blue marine type clay and it forms like concrete on you, had to pressure wash my clothes after to get it off enough to throw in the washer.  Of course with all the jigging and moving back and forth to get the machine into place in the beginning I had broken the ground surface so now the Lull was stuck.  Called a buddy who came over and we brought my Franklin skidder down there, 40,000 lb winch made short work of that problem.  I guess that's one way to find out the real world capabilities of a machine, not that I want to do that again mind you, but yes worth every penny already.

Very handy in deed. Mine has the same lift capacity listed but I have a feeling it will lift more.

We had a calf born last week as well. No Lull needed yet though :D. It has been exceptionally wet here this year too.

I have another one in the calving shed at the moment, need to go and check on her again shortly, I kept looking over at her during the ordeal thinking she was going to calf right then and there on me in the middle of it.  At least she is not a heifer, this will be her 4th calf and she milks heavy for a Jersey on just grass, her bag is way out there right now.

The shed is done and I got some blades sharpened. I  still need to tweak a few things but all in all I'm impressed. I was kinda expecting to have some trouble right off the bat but the blades cut very well. I am happy 8)

Playing catch up now. I took off between Christmas and New year's. I've got over 7000 feet of orders to fill. I got a good jump on it this week.

Here's part of it.

it's been unseasonably warm here. Lots of mud and rain. It seems it will never quit ::). I sure hope it freezes soon. I need mo logs.

times like this a mini excavator with long reach would be great. Park it in one spot and stretch to reach everything. or enjoy the flotation of the tracks.

Either way I am sick of this mud. I really wish it would either dry up or freeze.

Only think that kept me from completely burying the tractor was the belly pan.

btw, shed looks great. I really need something like that. even if its just a place to park stuff to open up the rest of the shop.

Great lookin sharpening setup.
I have retired my old drag sharpener and now use resharp but if were 20 yrs younger I would do something similar to your operation.

Nice little blade shop.  Looks like you got the blade on the outside of the 3rd guide, it will keep going forever like that, no doubt you found out, if not better go check it :D :D :D
Not sure what you are referring to?
I had the magnet on and it stopped when it was supposed to.
I like having all that extra space now.

I thought  it looked like the blade was outside the vertical pin on the third guide, the guide on the right, rather than between the pin and the roller. Many times Ive done this, the magnet catches on the pin. and the blade  keeps going round and round. 😹

My partner's new '81 644 Lull has been fun to use as well. I found some service info on the web here;
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B9-7bn5CX9NDUUt3YkJtQ1U0LWs
I've got steering cylinder parts coming from Tiffin, we blew out the rear steering seals which made it fun to get into the shop and over the pit, the steering pressure drops to both cylinders. Next up is fixing the frame tilt. Once we can run the pumps I'll remove the rod end hose and see if the packing is blown and if not I suspect trash or a failure in the counterbalance valve, never been inside one of those.

I added a new chainsaw sharpening vice in the sharpening shed. Works great.

I have four different chainsaws and they are all different heights. So I came up with this idea. It is so nice to finally have a dedicated spot for sharpening. It only takes about five minutes or less to sharpen a 36" chain. I use the stihl 2 in 1 file. I have a grinder but will be selling it. The file is faster and better.

Figured it was time for an update.
The sharpening equipment is working out great. I've been busy.

I sawed live edge siding for the first time last week. I could saw that all the time. Good money!!
