Need help with Allis Chalmers 514 forklift
« on: November 04, 2018, 12:48:15 AM »
Thinking of buying an Allis 514 forklift but there some issues that worry me.  It has been sitting for a long time but I did get it running.  Its a 4 speed but I cannot get it in the upper right position (grinds gears) and it wont stay in the lower left position.  Runs OK in upper left and lower right positions.  Maybe old fluids?  Its missing the dipstick under the operators right leg so I don't know the level in that section.  The dipstick further back on the left side near the hydraulic pump shows adequate  fluid but after running the lift the dipstick shows whitish and foamy fluid.  I have no manuals and I don't know much about the machine.  The hydraulic pump seems to make a lot of noise, can you still get parts for something this old?  I have found manuals on line for an Allis 510 forklift but not for the 514.  Are they the same machine?  Also what is a good way to clean the gas tank?  So much gunk in  tank its plugging up the outlet.   Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

I don't know any specifics about the machine.
It sounds like the transmission has some water in it.  There is a good chance that rust is causing the shifting problems.  Don't buy this unless you are willing to open the transmission and plan to use it intermittently.  Would it be possible to fabricate a replacement gas tank?
You may think that you can or may think you can't; either way, you are right.

Your shift fork engages that slot on the sliding clutch or sliding sleeve if its synchronized.  It locks the floating gear of the gearset to the intermediate shaft while all other floating gears float.  You can only lock one gear at a time to the intermediate shaft. Thats a new clutch.

The grind is when the clutch splines and matching splines in the gear have worn down and no longer actually mesh.  Either by a bad operator or worn out synchros that are failing to bring the shaft rotational speeds together for a smooth shift.  A syncro is basically a floating brake inside a gearbox.

Straight gearboxes are much cheaper and simpler than syncrhronized ones to repair.  But either is a full trans out and teardown.  Pull the top cover off the trans before you buy and inspect the teeth for being round over like this.  Double clutching will help .. Or be downright mandatory to access those gears.

The squeeling pump is probably from the air in the system.  It doesnt tell you whether the pump is good or bad as air will make a squeeler out of both.  But frothy fluid is air going through the pump gears or vanes and imploding as it goes from negative pressure to very high.

Lowball'm on this one.
