Honda G200 wont run
« on: June 07, 2019, 09:34:41 PM »
I got a  Honda G200 on a rototiller and last year it ran but this year we went to fire it up and it didn't run. It backfired but wouldn't run.

I was told it had a stuck valve before so I tore the head off and the valves looked fine.
I pulled the carburetor it was a little dirty but I cleaned it anyways and it still wouldn't run.
Also tried a new plug. It had spark, the whole time.
I thought maybe a sheared/bent flywheel key, nope that's fine to.
So I thought I would check the points make sure they looked decent and they did, so I put it all back together and now no spark.

Anyone have any tips for me?? I'm lost on this thing.

FACTS

F=fuel
A=air
C=compression
T=timing
S=spark

Must have all of the above to run.

Using fresh Fuel?
Air filter good, no mouse nest.

Not sure what happened to your spark recheck every thing to make sure it was reassembled correctly and no wires were pinched or the insulation has been chafed off, oh but first check that the kill switch is on too (it happens to everyone eventually).

Instead of checking valves first usually you would check the compression first then if low move on to check cause (valves, valve timing, rings..)

I have no experience on this model but I see that the cam shaft is run by a chain, wondering if there any chance the chain jumped causing the valves to be out of time?

This model doesn't have overhead cam, is there a chain in the bottom end? I have no compression gauge that's why I pulled the head to check valves. I did try unhooking the kill switch in case it was faulty but still no spark. And it doesn't have a air filter on it. Oh and yes I'm using fresh fuel.

I've noticed on my Honda's that sit and don't start a couple different things.  First, stinkin' kill switch / on/off switch has gone bad, twice!  Second, critters got in and chewed the wire going to the p/u on the flywheel. Dang critters!  If you pull the cord and cover off, hit the flywheel with some steel wool or something to get that cleaned up too.

I hope you have not been running it without an air filter. The cam is gear driven so that should not be an issue. Did you remove the main jet and emulsion tube when you had the carburetor apart? They have to be squeaky clean. Are the points worn or burnt? Run a business card through them while closed, even skin oil from handling will cause problems.

For the cam chain/gear I was looking at the parts diagram and noticed that it shows two different cams one is chain drive and one is gear drive not sure which one you have or even if they were ever sold in North America but where your's has points I figure it must be quite old and there is a chance it could be chain drive.

When trouble shooting a no start (FACTS) I will usually do them in this order of easiest first, Kill switch on, fuel in tank, fuel in carb (if it has a float bowl drain), remove air filter, if not smelling like flooded prime carb with mixed fuel (if it fires clean carb), if smells like fuel check for wet plug and spark....

We have been running it with no filter. It only gets used for maybe 2 hours each year in the garden so no one wants to spend any money on it lol. The points looked clean and I didn't touch them when I took the cover off. I didn't clean the flywheel but the coil looked pretty clean (no rust).

 No spark means you have to go through   a methodical checklist of the basic components and settings  of electrical components. Even though the points may look clean they can have a coating of oxidation them, so you should clean them with some fine emery paper.  they should be visually checked that they are opening and closing if you don't have a test light. The backfire could also be your valve timing is off. Reset the valve clearance exhaust .020 and intake.015 approx. Not sure exact but that's something you can google. Running no air filter in a dusty environment tells me you have neglected this poor engine. To further your small engine education you need to buy a compression tester now.

Remove the rewind and spin the flywheel backwards, if it hits compression and bounces that is not a problem.

It has lots of compression. You can feel when you pull it over. I also seem to have "lost" my feeler gauges... I'm just going to do an engine swap on this thing and hopefully fix it later..
