This was found in a small patch of woods near town in a residential area. Any idea what this may be or what it was used for?

Its a spout off an old grain drill.

Yes, an opener. Someone looked for that in a field for a long time, a long time ago.

It's amazing that the little drag chain that covered the seeds is still intact after being outside all these years.  That drill was probably made somewhere around 1900. give or take a few years.

Yup.  Definitely a spout from a grain drill.
