How much "oversize" are Oversize Shanks?
« on: September 19, 2019, 12:19:39 PM »
I'm slowly setting up a circular sawmill with a 48" 52 tooth blade that uses 2-1/2 shanks. The blade was empty, but some scrounging turned up a couple old shanks. After cleaning up a few sockets I was able to turn a shank and a new bit into place by hand (no tool!). So when ordering oversize shanks, how much larger are they? I don't want to order 50 of a given size if I need 3rd over, etc. Your guidance is greatly appreciated!

If you're putting in new shanks, you'll have to get the saw hammered.  Since you don't have a tool, and you're getting new shanks, let the saw doc put them in.  He'll know which sockets would need oversized shanks, what size and which won't.  Buy the saw wrench.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Those old abandoned saws, besides needing shanks and a hammering job, may have a bad shoulder or two so get it looked at before spending money. 2/12 x 8 shanks come in 4 sizes.
