Hi, first time on this forum. This is my story. This past July I donated my 1879 Chase Sawmill to Dudley Farm in Guillford Connecticut. The mill is complete. Still all babit bearing, flat belt with rack and pinion drive! We are starting the process of restoring the old girl to her pass glory. We are in need of some information on the species of timber that was used for the husk and cariage. I believe that Chase used Douglas Fir. Any thoughts? I tried to call Bruce Dexter who worked for Chase but could not raise him. If anyone has the answer or any other information. It would be great! Thank you.

Heart pine was most often used on the old mills. The chase that I have [just a pile of iron] could be as old as yours. It is a no. 1 before the notches. The Dexters where Chase for 3 generations, I believe.

Oh by the way, Mr. Reynolds, I think we have met. Where you once looking for a wood framed edger?
