post and beam timbers
« on: June 03, 2005, 09:19:05 AM »
This may seem a silly question but I am new to sawing. I own a small tree removal co. and want to build a post and beam workshop. I have a log standing which is a tulip poplar(yellow poplar) and is 60feet tall and 30" at the top. A friend of mine has a peterson mill and we were going to mill all of my 8x8s and 8x12s etc out of it. However somebody tells me that every timber has to box the heart so we would only be able to get about 5 timbers out of this massive tree????

  Any input greatly appreciated.

Also does anybody know a structural engineer who could work the #s on a frame as I need somebody to sign off on my plans?

  Thanks Paul

I've posted lots of info here. Try finding some threads about "boxed heart" timbers and see the sawing pattern I use.
I'm not sure if a swing blade can cut it or not.
If you can't find it let me know and I'll find the thread and post the link for you.
