If my permit to cut says 1000 cubic meters does this mean that I can cut enough logs to make 822,000 board ft of lumber. I am figuring a cubic meter is the same as 411 board ft

Any thoughts

SwampDonkey

for 8 ft softwood only
1 M^3 = 164 bft
1000 M^3= 164,000 bft ~ 328 cords

if a cubic meter is about 39x39x39=59319 cub inches/by 144 cubic inches( a board ft)= 412 brd ft. Where am I going wrong

Something about the recovery of square edged material (a board foot) from a round log. Not a 1:1 ratio.  ::)

Exactly  8)  ;)

And to add to the confusion  ;D

There was an recent post similar to this. Try this link

where 1 Mbfm X 5.663 = 1m cubed

If my math was correct, 1000 cubic metres divided by 5.663 =177 thousand feet logs.

more questions

If I am allowed to cut 1000 cubic meters of logs per year how many board ft approx would this give me sawing with a bandmill and doing a good job of sawing. Which I think I do???????

Jeff

I suppose that would have a lot to do with if they were 8" logs or 28" logs. Estimating volumes is just that, an estimation. For an estimation to be close you need to input as many of the variables as possible.

I have more to say tonite than I have had in the past year.

Depending on log size and the scale used to determine that 5.663 cubes = 1000 Mbdft and that 1000 cubes = 177 Mbdft, you should average a 10-30% increase in scale using a band mill and taking light slabes.
Therefore maybe 210 Mbdft?

My self-educated guess!

In all seriousness guys, the conversion differs not only by diameter of the log, but also the length (because of increasing taper with length). There were many samples measured at local mills here to get that conversion factor for 8 foot softwood (spruce-fir). Stephen's figures are for 8' hardwood and birch and are bang on with what we found here. Quebecnewf is going to be dealing mainly with spruce-fir, and probably some white birch or soft maple if I'm not mistaken.
