I have been blessed with relatively little SPAM e-mail. All of a sudden though, I'm getting SPAMMED with messages to watch a certain stock and buy in now while it's on the rise. At the bottom of the messages, there is a line that says if I wish to be removed from the mailing list, contact this e-address.
My question for you computer savvy types is this: will contacting them truly get me dropped from the mailings or am I just confirming to them that the address is active and setting myself up to get deluged with SPAM?

If you reply to it, 99.9% chance you have just let that spammer know you are a live and valid email address and you are now worth much more when he adds you to the list he sells to his spammer buddies.

Ive been getting those e-mails also.. usually 2 a day on all 3 e-mail accounts that I have...it gets annoying, but the best thing is to ignore them or use outlook express' mail rules to set up an automatic trash of any e-mail that contains the word "stock"

The last week or so has gotten bad for me. I never even open them, just dump them, but now I'm getting several times what I was getting before. :-\ >:(

I like those stock tips. ;)  I have mortaged my half of the farm and bought those stocks. I am going to be rich. 8) Can't convince the wife to mortage her half and buy those stocks so we both can be rich. :( She is not as smart as I am when it comes to investing. :P Also, I am going to rich when that Nigerian banker gives me my share of the millions I helped him sneek out of his country. Last week I won the Irish lottery, just need to send in a little money to pay for the money transfer. ;) I must be luckiest person in the world to get all those good stock tips, win lotteries, and all that other free stuff. ;D :)

I have had little spam lately except for those stock offerings. They keep coming from different sender names and with subject lines that have nothing to do with it. I just dump them although it is irritating.

you can set up outlook express to dump them for you. Just click on tools -> message rules -> mail

then check the new button (for a new rule) and then check the box that reads "where the message body contains the specific words"

then in the bottom box check the box that reads "delete it"

in the third box down, click on the blue link  and type in the words "stock symbol" and click ok several times until the rules boxes dissappear.

it will scan every e-mail you get, and if any of them contain the words "stock symbol", it gets trashed and you never see it.

Of course I have mine set to delete several e-mails, like the manhood enlargement  ones, and the viagra ones... the list keeps getting longer and longer, but the delete thingy works :)

There are a bunch of spams out there that are not capable of being filtered with outlook mail rules. I found a free program that helps a lot SpamPal, but it doesnt get everything, but the recent stas 20 got through and it tossed 76o without throwing out anything good, thats pretty good.

Thanks all for the responses. Thanks Getoverit for the step by step tutorial on using the message rules, that's very helpful. I'll give it a try. Even if it only catches a part of incoming SPAM, it will be a welcome help.

For about a week I was getting e-mails with a Doom Worm Virus or someting like that.  I'd get two or three of them a day.  Norton always caught them and they came as attachments that I never would have opened anyway.  They came from postmasters or such with failed message delivery titles.  Haven't got any in a few days now 8)

well, I got the SPAM about the stock tips again today. After looking into it, it looks like they are sending a picture file (GIF) instead of text. Unfortunately, outlook express wont allow you to filter out GIF files only, but they will allow you to delete all e-mail that has an attachment. Any e-mail that is sent in html format will show up as an attachment, so this is not a good idea to delete them.

I guess one of the SPAM removal programs is in order for these...

A word of caution.
One bad aspect of spam filtering is that you may also filter mail that is not spam if you are not very careful in the words that you use to catch the spam.  Using "stock" as a filter may not be a good choice if you are an active online stock trader and solicit email from your broker.

What I've found is there are two types of emails, the ones that are truly spam, and the ones that are from a mailing list.

There is a difference.

The ones which are from a mailing list have a reference to the Can-Spam act on them, and they give you an opt out.

I had been getting up to 150 mailing list emails a day from various mailing lists, but a couple of weeks ago, I figured it couldn't get any worse, so I started clicking on the 'click here to opt out' but only one ones who gave the details of the owner of the mailing list and made reference to the Can-Spam act.

The notice looks like this:

You are receiving this mail because your agreed to receive third party offers. If you would no longer like to receive such offers, please click here.

OR please print the offer you've received and mail it to:

yoyocreations.com - a property of F.e.M
2122 S. El Camino Real F
SC, CA 92672

We will remove you from our database within 10 business days, which is in compliance with the 2003 CAN-SPAM act.

If it doesn't have that, or similar, I assume it's from a spammer, and don't click anywhere for fear of advising them that I DO exist.

Oh, and, after a week of clicking on every email's 'unsubscribe' thing, I received 14 unsolicited emails today, which is a bit better than 150.
