RE:  STREAM CROSSING PERMIT TRAINING

On 4 October, the DEQ, in cooperation with the DNR and the Otsego and Crawford-Roscommon Conservation Districts, will be providing a stream crossing permit application training session in Grayling, MI.  The goal of this training will be to discuss the Joint Permit Application and other components of the DEQ permitting process as it relates to road stream crossings for logging operations.  Forest product industry personnel interested in learning about stream crossing permit applications are encouraged to attend.  The training has been approved for the following continuing education credits: 5.5 hrs of SAF CFEs and 4 hrs of SFE CEs.

The training session will include both classroom and field components:
-   Indoor discussion (approximately two hours)
o   Forests for Fish Program
o   Joint Permit Application form
   Application sections relevant to stream crossings
   Application figures
o   Permit categories
o   Application checklist
o   DEQ permit application review process
-   Outdoor site visits
o   Data collection
o   Application figures

The classroom portion will be held in the conference room at the Hartwick Pines Visitor Center at Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling.  Lunch will be provided.  The training will start at 9 am and conclude in the field by 4 pm.

Please reply by email to kleitchm@michigan.gov if you are interested in attending.  Attendance for this session will be capped at 25 people and spots will be assigned on first come, first served basis.  Preference will be given to those that have not previously attended this training.  Once you are registered you will receive an e-mail confirmation with additional information.

Tree Farm Conference and Michigan Forest Association Meeting 2017

This is an invitation to all Tree Farmers to attend our conference for forest landowners in Tawas on Sep 22-23, 2017.  This is a combined meeting of the Michigan Tree Farm System and the Michigan Forest Association, another excellent organization for forest landowners here in Michigan.  The meeting, held on the shores of Lake Huron, will focus on the connections between forests and water with the theme of Great Forests make Great Lakes.

Friday Sep 22 will be educational sessions at the Tawas Bay Beach Resort and Saturday Sep 23 will be a bus tour of three nearby certified Tree Farms.  You can register by returning the attached form and a check payable to the Michigan Forest Association or you can also pay online with a credit card at www.MichiganForests.org.  Registration fees increase after Sept 1 so please register soon.

This meeting will be a great place to meet other landowners who also love their forests, and the Michigan Tree Farm System is excited to partner with the Michigan Forest Association to host this meeting.  I hope to meet many of you at the meeting in Tawas next month.

RE:  MSAF FALL CONFERENCE

Registration is now open for the MI SAF fall meeting in Grayling on October 11-12, 2018.  The focus of the meeting is Industry Foresters and the Forest Products Industry.  We will be hearing from a dozen industry foresters or mill managers in the Lower Peninsula about how they procure wood, what products they produce and a bit about their markets.  It should be a very interesting meeting and we hope to see you there.

A few items to note about this meeting:

We will meet on Thursday at the Kirtland Community College on Four Mile Road & I-75 just south of Grayling.  This is a great facility and they are even expanding to offer skilled trades training for the forest products industry.
  • Happy hour (free beer!) and a pig roast dinner will be at the Ramada Inn Thursday evening in Grayling (hotel rooms are just $75).  Alternative dinner choices may be available upon request.
  • Friday morning will be optional tours of several forest products companies in Grayling, including both primary and secondary manufacturers.  Did you know that the largest consumer of basswood in the USA is in Grayling?  And the worlds largest particle board mill?  Sadly we have to wait until 2019 to tour the new Arauco plant for safety reasons.
  • The costs for this meeting are low, and we are passing on those savings to you.  You can send a check or pay online at https://squareup.com/store/lp-chapter-of-mi-saf/.  Please register by October 1.
  • Vendors and sponsors have 4 levels to consider sponsoring the meeting to share their organization and products with 100-150 foresters and friends.
  • Please contact Kayti Brinkman (brinkmank16@gmail.com) regarding donations to the Thursday evening raffle to benefit the MI SAF Education Fund
  • Everyone is welcome foresters, loggers, sawmill owners, truckers, tree huggers and you dont have to be a member of SAF to attend.  Please share this email and attachments widely with your colleagues.  We are down to 374 SAF members in Michigan so please use this as an opportunity to invite fellow foresters to join SAF, contribute to our profession and better serve society.
