I would think that for those first cuts on a log it would be a valueable tool. Just to determine how much to cut off of the first cut. I thought about mounting a lazer pointer on a small bearing on the head frame and be able to align it with the blade. Then just swivel it with your hand and cast the dot down the log. I bought one of those lazer pointers at the "Buck or Two" store for $2.  I figure for maybe $8 I could rig up this simple valueable tool. It would be nice to have one that casts a line all the way down the log but I would imagine they are pricey.
