@Quebecnewf Looking Good!  Why the tarping?  How'd you get the logs out of the woods with no sled?

Without a doubt you have enjoyable posts.  Thanks for sharing.

Quebecnewf,
I (and apparently several others....) was wondering when we would get an update on your Winter adventures. You may think that what you do is considered modest, but I think many of us admire (and envy?) the courage and gumption you demonstrate to us every winter. I'm pretty sure I couldn't do it.
I hope a safe and prosperous outing for you and yours. Vaya con Dios.

Clearing some ground that used to be farmed and was let grow up , mostly ash and a little birch.  Nothing much but firewood, although there is an occasional log worth keeping for the sawmill.

Will you be doing seaway work? Pretty river, but tough waters with a pretty challenging draft. Pilot work up there pays pretty good, but it's stressful. I have spent many weeks on a small boat in the Thousand Islands section. You picked a cold time of year to start, but I guess you are used to it already and know the drill well enough.

I went up there with Moran a LONG time ago 😂 I want to say I was 19? I did a season on the lakes in 2004/05 for another company. Did the Erie from end to end and some of the Champlain, been thru the black rock locks in Tonawonda which isnt far from the falls. Going down the seaway is like extortion, the last time I went the office had to send someone from CT with a bag of money to keep paying the pilots, why you dont see alot of boats go up there unless it's a season's worth of work. I'm not a fan of working for the "evil empire" but the moneys good and the equipment isnt garbage, they are known for killing a few southerners every once in a while on the barges but the notch is not something I plan on crossing.

QuebecNewf,

Green dot's where I do work for a northern SPF mill, and red's home.  Man, I have spent four or five days in Deer Lake in the winter more than a few times ---- that were supposed to be in-and-out same  day. hahahaha!!   You do get the weather that puts the rest of us to shame.

Funny story about the north where I'm helping the northern mill:

Down here if there's a skiff of snow or a bit of ice on the road, there's panic and schools are closed.  Softies and snowflake politicians and bus drivers!!!   Up north there, only two reasons schools are closed:  1) it's below -50C or 2) the wolves are in town hunting children.  That's the written board policy.

I was 5 in, at least, but I was reading from the 'most recent posts' and selected 'reply' to the one below the one I wanted to reply to. My bad. I did see your post and did some research ;D ;D ;D. I have a hard enough time keeping up with my own local feuds and competitions, it is even harder to keep up with ones and hour and change away. It would be a lot easier if I lived in beautiful uptown Conesville. ;D Or maybe not. I have to keep track here of who is mad at who and who I can tell that I worked with so and so and they won't get mad at me for doing certain business with a certain guy. i like most everybody and they each have the things they do better than others, but there are of course a few guys I don't like or trust either. I have no tolerance for Low ethics. Every town is the same, right?
Sounds to me like if I ever came up and we had real visit I would wind up sleeping in my truck in your driveway. Not that this would be a bad thing. :) Just lets not do it in February, ok? :D I've done that many times, but I am getting older, I'm told.
