Sawmill got a workout today.
« on: January 18, 2009, 09:09:24 PM »
A friend asked me to cut on halves with him on a "few" big red oak logs he has.
I told him I would do it if he would stage the logs, use his loader to put the logs on the bunk and offbear. Boy am I glad I am doing this as there are about 24 logs that average somewhere in the 30" range staged and ready to go, he said he still has a few in the woods. I only cut for about 3 hours, mostly 2x4's and 2x6's, got a little bit of various 4/4 stock, cut 2 - 4x6's and 16 - 4x4's. Worked my mill and my friend hard no longer than we were at it, I told him I wanted to get started @ daylight saturday and he said that he was beat after just a couple of hours and dont know how he'll handle a full day ;D

Nice!  Are you going to quarter saw any of those logs?

Well.............kinda sorta maybe :-\. I am real new to milling. I am pretty sure some of what I cut today is quarter sawn but I am not positive. I have a Lucas mill and from what I have read I did quarter saw some of it but that isnt what I am going for. The lumber is going to be construction lumber on both our parts so i went mostly for the highest yield.
