At about four A.M. I got a call from my distraught grandmother who said someone had just kicked thier back door in.  Apparently my grandpaw heard what he thought was someone knocking on the back door  which goes into the kitchen and is on the second story. He went to answer the door and just as he was heading down the hall someone kicked the door plumb off the hinges. Pawpaw grabbed his old 12 ga. and turned on the light but as soon as he did the guy ran back out the door and jumped off the porch then ran into the woods. We called the law and filed a report (alot of good that did us) then we spent the next few hours checking the woods and abandoned houses in the valley. I garuntee this guy won't be trying to pick on the "defenseless" anymore and should walk with a pretty good limp for awhile. He got way more than he bargained for when he decided to go after that 87 year old hellcat.

That's good stuff.

I stared down the barrel on the "wrong end" once while scrambling to call 911 as a kid coming home from a late night hockey event. We found a car overturned in the ditch and ran to the nearest house to cal the police  :o wooops, Gramps didn't like banging o nthe door at 2 am. Scared us to death, no shorts got filled, but scary! :D

Hi there from scotland, im glad your parents are ok! Here in the uk if some low life breaks in to your humble home and you use any force against them , you are the one breaking the law! ! ! And if i took my 12ga out and frightened that thief who forced his way into my home, i would be going to jail, guns removed! Now thats crazy!

Tom

It's not that way here in Florida, USA, Tree tech.  Those guys get into the wrong house, they are toast.  As a matter of fact, running into the woods might not save their hide.  If they are still a threat outside of the house, they might be asked to count the number of buckshot in a Double Ought.

We've  lived under continually restrictive rules here too.  Not as restrictive as yours, but they still put the victim in jeopardy from both ends.   Some of the lawmakers are beginning to develop some common sense and the bad guys are having to accept a lot more responsibility.

One thing a lot of them don't consider, when they burglarize in the Rural areas, is that they haven't told anybody where they are or what they are doing.  A bad guy inside of a house in the swamp, facing an armed owner, is all alone and miles from home.   I mean, really, all alone.  He could disappear and nobody would have the slightest idea what happened to him.  If a swamper found it too inconvenient to bother law enforcement, he would have the tools at his disposal to bury the entire threat, automobile and all, Right or wrong.

It's a good thing for terrorists to remember too.  They aren't attacking a bunch of wimps when they muck around with a Citizen of the United States of America who lives in a State that believes in the Second Amendment to our Constitution.

I agree with you totaly! When the fire arms inspector visited for my gun licence, he basicaly told me people shouldnt have guns and he would have great pleasure in taking mine away from me!i have never been in trouble before! Im 35, what is that all about! We cant even carry a small lock knife!

SPIKER

that is problem with governments they think if they take away guns and personal defense weapons that it will stop crime...   all it does it give the criminals no fear...

I think grandpaw needs a new sign to hang on the back door.  "Trespassers found on property will never be found again!"  or perhaps " trespassers will be violated" :o
I say good for grandpaw go get em!
:D

Here in Florida we have a "stand your ground law" which basically means if I feel threatened no matter if I'm inside my home or outside even in a parking lot if I feel threatned I can take measures up to and including lethal force.

Case in point, last week in Tampa a guy jumped out from behind a tree at a older gentleman who not only had a pistol but shot the guy dead. State attorney said no charges. It was never proved if he saught to harm the old man his just feeling threatened was enough.

No longer do you have to worry about a bad guy falling inside your house after you shoot him.

Coming into Florida on the interstate the Brady bunch who are against anyone owning a firearm have billboards warning visitors that florida citizens have the right to defend themselves.

Got pawpaw's door back up today. I don't worry about them too much cause the old man has no problem whatsoever making someone disapear.  The thing that pith's me off the most is we don't usally feel the need to lock our doors (I live across the corn field) and niether do our neighbors. I don't think it would be condusive to anybodies good health to be seen in the valley here if they are not known by the folks that live here because every body is pretty fired up about the whole thing. Oh yeah I talked to the sheriff himself this morning and he said if the oppertunity presents itself to sling a little buckshot then feel free.

Unfortunately, we have the same sort of problem in New Zealand.  What I cant understand is most Kiwis are actually quite sensible yet they persist in electing complete #*%holes to run the place.

Glad your folks are OK.

Kid that works for me, just saved a neighbor from a severe ass kicking.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Last night, our dog must have followed us down the hill, when we went to get Reinas daughter at the bus stop, 4 miles away.

When we got back, dog was nowhere to be found. I searched this morning. Nothing.  >:( >:(

Reina walked to the Pulperia this afternoon, and asked around if anyone has seen our totally black female with the pink collar. Guy lives at the bottom of our hill told her JUAN took it home in his pickup. She could not find out who JUAN is, but, the dog was found running down the road by our helper.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

  Guess JUAN received a phone call that the GRINGO doesn't tolerate thieves and was looking for our dog.  FREAKIN COWARDS here.  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Next time, I will know who this guy is, and, off to the hospital he will go. Haven't used my jungle training in a long time, but, I haven't forgotten a thing !!!!!!!

Appreciate this discussion, and admire the old grandpa.  Now I understand why my family left Scotland hundreds of years ago.  Actually, I suspect they were kicked out, because I found that they were in England in 1603 or 4 when they sold shares in the Virginia company.

Just as another angle on the same topic. Not to be confused with a thief, I have, and told my children, if you break down and have to walk up to someones house in the middle of the night, don't walk up real quite. Walk up talking really loud, speaking to the dog, or just singing. Let the people that live there know that you are not sneaking. Around here a nut lives longer than a sneak thief.

By the way, give my regards to grandpaw, if he needs some more shells, I might be able to find some.

I am glad your Grandparents are alright. Things like that can easily go either way.

Handy Andy- thats why my family left Scotland, too. Between Scottish and Danish, I am only 4th generation in country.

Timberfaller- Glad you and yours are safe. I'm glad I live up here in Maine, we have the "Castle law", and you have the legal right to use any force to remove a threat. I would no matter where I live, but here I just don't get in trouble.

Timberfaller glad all safe.
Tree tech, my mothers friend had a simular experience many years ago, she came home from work to find a young man in her hall way she had an umbrella in her hand at the time and gave him a reall good poke as he ran off pased her through the open door.
She reported the incident to police, the guy got caught the same day and then he pressed assult charges against the poor lady.
What about that for justice.
Glad I live in NZ now.

There was a very similar incident near here the other night.  An 82 year old man who lived alone was about to bed down in his humble home, when someone busted the door down.  The assailant was described by the old man as being dressed like a wild west train robber.  He was described by the investigating officer as being dressed like some kind of a "ninja."  Both of them got a real good look at him.  When he burst in, the would-be robber used a stun-gun on the old man, causing some severe burns on his arms.  The old man managed to get his hands on the .357 Magnum that he kept handy and fired two shots.  He says the guy never twitched when he hit the floor!  That is one low-life SOB who won't have to think about his next robbery, or worry about armed "victims" any more.

The old gentleman is in no danger of prosecution whatsoever, though there will be a brief investigation.  His actions were well within the old law in Florida, which has been robustly enhanced recently.  We have always had the right to use deadly force against an assailant within the walls of our own home or business, or in the event that we had no way to escape an assailant anywhere.  Now, we are not required to attempt to escape if the assailant presents an obvious threat to life.

All I can say to you folks who do not live under these rules is, you and your fellow citizens need to muster up the gonads to take your DanG Government back from the thieves!
