Well it has finally happened .
We have had a few cold days here and we now have a total of 4 inches of ice . This is the first time we have seen it freeze up and be this smooth.
We walked across today picked up the snowmobile and went in the woods.Came back out this aft left the snowmobile and walked back home  .Here are a few pics.
Supposed to be cold for the next 2 days so we will be driving across by snowmobile tomorrow . High speed is a given.

This is one of the ropes we have placed to help hold the ice as it freezes. This is the 3" rope the 6" rope is further to the east

We don't have any ice on the big lake down here, the only ice fishing is on the inland lakes. how far of a walk is that?   Drive fast and be safe ;)
If it can't be nailed or glued then screw it

Been warm here the last 10 days now or so but the two months before that was a deep freeze. Could drive anywhere you wanted here now pretty much. They've been driving on the lakes in pickups now since The middle of Dec or so. Always one or two that try and push their luck though and end up wet.

The distance across this section is about a 1000 meters. We are still blessed with cold -22 here tonite and we crossed by snowmobile today for the first time. We have about 6" of ice now and it is fairly hard.

We have very little snow supposed to get some on Tue , we hope

We are finally getting snow.  It started last night and virtually hasn't stopped yet.  Supposed to get winds and more snow tonight and tomorrow.  Got about 8 inches so far and hoping for more.  The skidding should be good now for us.  The ice here is thick this year due to no snow and cold temps.  We had 26" of nice hard ice on the lakes already a week ago.  Plenty of ice here for vehicles.  The normal thickness to drive a half ton is 14 inches.  Going to need an extension on the ice auger early this year.  Like some other years we get upwards of 4 ft of ice before spring breakup.
