White Pine Trees on Property. Value?
« on: May 02, 2011, 05:49:43 PM »

I was wondering if anyone could help me?  I live in Eastern Ontario (Prescott) I have 10-15 large (100 + ft) White Pine trees in close proximity to my house. Most are straight and do not branch apart untill 60- 70 ft from the ground. They are between 2-3 feet in diameter. Could anyone give me and idea of their approx. value? If I was to cut down and trim them myself and arrange for a logging company to pick them up would it be worthwhile financially? Also, can anyone help me with possible contact numbers for someone who would be interested in purchasing these logs?

Welcome to the forum MC.

I'm not sure if a logging company would be interested in them due to their close proximity to a house, mostly due to the risk of metal being in them. I bet you could find someone like a small logger or individual that might be interested though.

Another thing to consider would be to cut them down and have someone with a portable sawmill cut them into lumber for you, which you could then sell and/or use yourself.

We all hate to guess without seeing the trees,$2000 would be my guess and that is in your pocket. Will get more, but you have to pay the trucker. May have to pay him more if a half load is left over,I doubt he'll go to the mill with a half of a load and just charge for a half load. Remember too you will have some small stuff, pulp to get rid of. And ALOT of brush too.

Welcom to the Forestry Forum MCoulter.  Wood value depends alot on your local area markets.  Is ther a log export yard in the region?  China and Japan are paying good coin for white wood these days, and those trees would probably scale out at near 1mbf per tree pretty easy from your description.  If you have any Veneer mills in your area, call the mill and ask for a buyer, to see if they will give you an idea of what you have.  Back in the day in Northern Wisc. White Pine veneer logs sold for $600 mbf, don't know if there is a market still for them

I don't have a dollar answer, but I would guess their biggest value is for a log home.
I have a buddy who is working building log houses, they're in Ottawa right now, I'll see what I can find out.

Mad Murdoch; 600/mbf is what I am paying for bush run saw logs, delivered to my yard.
