Just changed the oil in my Cat/Perkins engine.
The manual calls for 10.3 qts.
Put in 10 qts and ran the engine and checked the oil
dip stick indicates that it is 1" above the full notch.
This seems like a gross overfill.
Any input from you cat 51 owners out there?
Is the manual in error, or do I perhaps have the wrong dipstick?

Hello Pete!

As you know, I'm not a Cat owner, but I'm going to ask a dumb question anyway.

Did you change the filter????  That could make a difference!

Seems like a big difference in capacity though!  :-\

Yes Chuck.
Also, I only put in 10 qts of oil instead of the 10.3 called for as I had a 2-1/2 gallon jug of oil.
Judging by the size of the filter and the amount of oil that came out of the old one, I doubt that it holds more than about a pint.
Any snow up there yet?

I don't have  a cat wm, but I've worked with a number of cats.  Maybe another dumb question, did you drain it hot?
I cut it twice and it's still too short

petefrom bearswamp

yes, hot
I think I will measure the amount that came out.

8 qt oil pan on the 51 and 11 qt oil pan on the 62 hp.

Pete;  At the moment, we only have about 1¼ inches of snow and the thermometer reads 35°F.

Not good for the snowmobiles! smiley_thumbsdown

It got up to 47 deg. down my way on Saturday. Just a few days ago it was -5 deg. No snow, just mud (still). What a screwy NY winter!

thanks Marty,
Maybe the folks at Indianapolis can contact Cat so they can correct the manual.
I'll just drain 2 qts out, messy but necessary.
I guess with the Yanmar now offered a correction would be too late.
Perhaps a service bulletin to Cat owners is in order but I'm sure that I'm not the only one to overfill.
