First squirrel hunt with my boy!
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:56:32 PM »
I am one proud daddy! I took my 4 1/2 year old son hunting with me this evening. I just wanted him to enjoy his self and enjoy the woods. We drove the truck to the back of our farm, walked in the woods, where we worked on tree i.d., mast i.d., animal noises, checked out some box turtles and even managed to shoot 3 squirrels. Not bad for an hour in the woods ;D I wanted to keep the outing interesting, and fairly brief so he wouldn't get bored and wanna go home. He watched me clean all the squirrels, we even stretched one hide and tacked it on a board so he can keep it in his "nature collection"!! He wants to go tomorrow evening too!!!! I cannot wait till he is mature enough to hunt as well!!

Don't get in too big a hurry.  Cherish every second.  He'll be grown before ya know it. My youngest manchild is 11 and growing too fast. I sure was proud of him this afternoon certifying in hunters safety and busting those clays. Seems like yesterday I was watching the 21 y/o brother doing the same.

Good for you, Tom.  My son is 1.5 years old and I am eager to teach him to hunt, too.  :)

kylogger, good for you and your son!  Taking him in the woods is time well spent.  Here is an interesting article concerning the general trend in hunting.......those of us that take our kids hunting today are becoming a rare breed.

Awesome! We're all proud of you too Tom 8)

My kid is 10 and he can't yet understand the fascination with hunting or fishing as he thinks it's too boring. He enjoys ANY sport where he can run, kick, hit, throw, etc., and I am not smart enough to not participate with him, hence the torn ligaments in my knee(soccer), as well as bruised hip and elbow from ME showing him how to catch a long bomb(football). :-[

Today he and I are building a 6'x12' rebound back board on wheels for soccer practice. I'm sure I can find a way to injure myself during the project :-\ If I can't hurt myself during the building process, I'll wager I can sprain something after it's completed! :D

As dads I believe it's so important that we spend as much quality time as we can with our kids whenever we are able. Now that I'm older, I'll happily give up drinking a few beers with my friends to practice soccer with my son. I have hopes that he'll remember our time together and understand when he has children why nothing can replace one on one time, even if it's just going for a walk or talking about the events of the day.

Very good Tom.  You are right to keep it fun, educational, and still keep him interested.  I recall all of those trips with my Son, and he is passing the same down to his Sons.  Sometimes he even takes me.   :)

Thanks for all the great replies!! I just cannot describe what it felt like!! And he know officially knows the difference between hickory nuts and acorns :D To beat all I always move sticks outta my hind end area when I sit under a tree (to keep from making unintentional noise), anyway he must have seen me do that and every tree he sat under he removed the sticks!!! He also knew instinctively to listen to nut droppings (does that sound wrong?? LOL) from the tree tops! And when we would identify the little furry edible things up in the tree, he would look at me and say "Go shoot em' daddy!" I dare not miss on our first outing!!
