What type of blade for a circular mill?
« on: August 12, 2018, 09:37:16 AM »
Hi
Iím looking into either restoring a old circular sawmill or building my own and are looking on what type of blade that would be the best or better choice. Normalt in scandinavian we use some sort of hard tipped blade for milling but Iíve taken a liking for the insert tooth style blade .
So any thoughts and/or knowlege on why i should choose the one or the other style?
I like the insert style most because of the option to change tips and itís easy to sharpen.

You are on the right track when you prefer the inserted tip blade.  If you can find an older blade, you will be satisfied with it's operation.  A competent saw shop can repair even a damaged blade.  Be careful to choose a blade that uses a common size of shank and bit.       Regards, Clark

Most insert tooth blades take a pretty wide kerf vs a silver soldered carbide tooth blade like the Turbosaw or Peterson use. Then again, the blade plate thickness on the older circle handset millls necessitates that type of set up. I really like the performance of the turbokerf blade of the Turbosawmill. Pretty smooth cuts and very good performance.

The biggest problem with the insert tooth blade is that I can't find any place to buy it in Europe, any one knows if that's possible?  or knows shops in the US that sells used restored blades and will send it to Denmark?
I'm thinking around a 50-56" blade F-style shanks

IMHO when in Denmark do as a Dane ;)
look to Ecosagen, Laimet or slidetec for a blade builder

I suspect shipping would be expensive from the States

Best
