Late yesterday I got my Saw Mill delivered
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:58:36 AM »
Just wow!  What a massive saw mill.  At last I got my Saw Mill LogMaster LM2 delivered late yesterday afternoon.  Herman Gibson himself delivered it. He tow it from Texas with his wife. He spend few hours teaching me few things about the mill, specially all the safety issues to consider. He asked me to do few things without loading log on the top and give me few tips.  My ground was not level so my first priority is to level a long patch of ground for it before putting it to use. We had to get few 6X6 to place under few of the jacks to level it off in order to do some practice. One side tires were off the ground and he mentioned that the tires should stay on the ground to provide some support. There are 8 5000 lbs jacks, 4 on each side of it.
I could not believe how long this rig is. I asked him, this suppose to cut 21.5 feet longs, but it seams much longer.
He explained that the 3X6 quarter inch thick steel beems he used for frame comes this long when he gets them, and he prefer to give it free of charge to his customers than cutting it and selling it as scrap metal for 8 cents per pound. So, my saw will cut almost 26 feet logs as it came. Wow, what a deal!! Now that is a good human being and decent American. He could have cut it out, but he choose to be good.
The saw wheels are so massive, they are much bigger than any saw mill I had seen, of course I never has seen Log Master saws before yesterday afternoon. I have to get few pictures and post them here, when I make it home after work today.

I think I got a good saw mill.

Oh what a feeling. Watch them log stops.  :o
You will be able to put a 16 footer anyways on that mill. Gives you more room to get the head out of the way.

Now, you just need some 26' trees, a way to handle the logs & lumber, and a customer!  Beams and trailer decking might keep you busy.  I bet you can set yourself up a niche market for long timbers.  Not many people can cut that long.  Looking forward to the photos!

Yes, I highly recommend you stop by. That way, I just can hand you the seasoning.
I think it is good for you to see it, because you have seen few of them and I would like to see what you think of this.

As of now, I have no clue where to make a level area for it. It is about 38 feet long!  I have to drop down the trees in that area that I had planed to build a shed for it. Not a small task at hand!!  As of now in order to have it level to practice the functions without log on it, all four tires are up in the air. Therefore, I am not going to load it with a heavy log.  There is a lot for me to learn first before my first cutting time, but I am going to enjoy it.

Be careful when planning your new flat spot for your mill. So far, for my flat spot, I have moved 400 yards of overburden (with another 300 to go in the spring), 1,035 yards of gravel, and 20 yards of crushed stone, not to mention a fair number of stumps and largish rocks. :D

Congrats on your new mill.  8)

I brought in 2-3-4 loads of gravel for my mill. I put mine at a bottom of a small hill. the uphill side is level, for stacking lumber, the downhill side drops off and that is my log side. I built a place to put a few logs on.

You can't see but past those logs in waiting,it drops off a few feet. But does keep me out of the water in the time of year this picture was taken. The flat stock is laid across and I roll the logs on to the mill. I know you won't be rolling many logs on your mill with a peavey.   ;D

Length of the blade is 229 inches, which is 1-1/4″ bandsaw blade by 191″ long.
I also got 4 boxes of 6 each blades for it with it. I thought 24 extra blades should cover all my incoming mistakes.
I did also bought a metal detector. Tested it on my shooting range and notices it sure can pick up smallest pieces of metalic objects.

About making a flat area; just thinking about it , my shoulders pain much  more.

If you don't have a tractor the best thing you could do is to rent/hire and excavator.  It will make very quick work of pulling out stumps and leveling ground.  Then buy gravel as needed to fill in the areas where mill, truck, trailer and other equipment might go.  I would suggest to leave enough room on both sides for moving logs/lumber/slabs.  You will quickly run out of room anyway and will think of expanding the area.

This first picture was taken in October of 2012 before I started clearing for my mill site.
Luckily there were no big trees in the area and the one you still see in second picture I wanted to keep.

The photo below was taken in October of 2013.
I have about 8" of gravel under the mill and where you can see the trailer on the left.  There is a lane of gravel under the area where the tractor is, so a truck and trailer can come down there with logs, unload and back out.  There is no gravel between the tractor and the mill, just skids under the the logs.  All the work was done with the tractor you see in the pictures. I don't take on large jobs at my house, so this is big enough for me.  A shed is coming in the next couple of years.

It's the going that counts not the distance!

Very nice looking mill!!!!

As for the size of the clearing for the mill, etc..... you are far better with too big of a space than too tight!!!

I keep going back and making my working area larger and larger!!!! LOL!!!

I look forward to seeing your progress!

This morning before heading out, I took 3 feet straight edge and measured the maximum cutting width, it is 30 inches wide. But it can handle 36 inch logs. So, biggest possible cant should possible be 30 inches wide.

Dad2four :  Yes, I will make as big an area as my land allows me. I am thinking of 50 feet by 70 feet area. Have to drop about 20 trees first. Taking the pine stumps out is not that fast. I took one out, and I had to ding around it at least 5 feet deep to break it off. The tap root was so deep in there!!  I had no idea.

I measured between the saw blade rollers for maximum possible cut width. It is 29.5 inches.

And the arm can be moved all the way to 15 inches as seen here.

Congrats on the new mill. Is this your first one? That looks like one mean machine.

I am color blind !! Just an old school engineer who says bigger and stronger will do just fine.  I am one of those that when few have asked why I carry 45ACP, my answer is = because there is no 46ACP!!
If I could have dished another $5k, this would include a Diesel engine on it too.

And yes, this is my first saw mill. Hope to finish my projects within 5 years and also make few Dollars with it too.

Could not work on land to start clearing a flat area for the saw work area due to weather conditions, but I did started it up without a log on it and worked with levers for a while to get the hang of it. Did the best I could with the clip here one handed. It is better than nothing for those of you who are interested.

The only thing I see wrong ??? is that the log supply will run out about the time you get the feel for it :-\
Looks like a good solid machine caplable of having some good production days 8) Once you get the first ding in it  :snowball: you will have quite a work horse ;D and then the logging begins :new_year:
Enjoy your sawmill 8) 8) 8)

Next Feb will be 2 yr.'s It will saw a 24' pretty easy it will go more but why LOL I did get the 34 CAT upgrade You follow what Herman and Ed have taught You and just start out slow and steady speed will come. I use ear plugs and can hear the saw let that be a good judge as how its doing took me 6 band's to find out when they got dull LOL but they will let you know some times real fast and yes the breaking sound LOL but you'll learn watching the saw dust coming off the blade. No major issues I bought some wheel scrapper's because I didn't like how they were wearing but then I learned not to adjust them till the blade has the 6000 psi applied and the In is In and Out is Out is correct. That will be a LM owner thing. I could go on but heck just ask I'm here often.

Any of you guys that recently had LogMasters delivered:  Was there anything in your experience that, in hindsight, foreshadowed the fall of LogMaster?   Might be instructive for future buyers of mills as warning signs to look out for.

Just curious,
