Saw dies as soon as it hits wood. Stihl AV 024
« on: October 27, 2014, 12:41:12 PM »
Hi all,

I am have a old Stihl AV 024 that I purchased new 30+ years ago. I recently had it tuned at the shop I purchased it from and it won't cut a darn thing. As soon as it hits wood it dies. It doesn't matter what position it is in, it revs fine until you actually touch a log and then it just dies. It has had the plug, air and fuel filters, fuel line all replaced and the carb cleaned and rebuilt. Settings have been reset to factory and tweeked under no load and it responds beautifully then as soon as it comes in contact with a piece of wood it just dies.

Any Ideas as to what to look at next?

Welcome aboard Geospeedjr!  I think that saw is a prime candidate for a leakage test.  When they sit for a long period of time, and are not used, and sometimes even if they are used, the crankshaft seals can crack and or otherwise leak.  They will suck air in the seal area into the bottom end of the engine, and lean out the saw making it quit.  This will show itself more when you try to load the engine up rather than during WOT runs with the chain not in the wood.  could also be an air leak between the carb and the block, but it does sound like it could be an air leak.

If the fuel tank vent is plugged, it will act like this.  I don't know how the vent on your saw is set up.  On my 08s & S10, there is a short piece of fuel line with a set screw PUSHED, not screwed into it.  If the set screw were to be screwed/treaded into the fuel line, the threads will cut into the line creating a seal preventing air from being sucked into the tank.

Thanks for letting me join. The application process was brutal!

Chain on forward- Check!

Leak most likely haven't checked the crank seals. The carb intake boot was replaced with the carb rebuild. So that should be good. I will stop and get some carb spray cleaner on the way home tomorrow and see if that shows any possible leaks. It would not surprise me if the seals are dried up after 30+ years of use.

This might sound trivial but check the muffler screen .The 024 and 026's came with at least three styles of mufflers .Two were very restictive .

I have one myself and for only 42 cc's it does very well plus it's light as a feather .
