It is some sort of pto driven winch that small time loggers used in the 50s and 60s. mounted on a flatbed truck with a tower as the headblock and an arm that would swing out.

Are you referring to the pre-knuckleboom cable loaders that were truck mounted? I use to have a Prentice with a 12ft boom on a home-made wood dray. However it was all hydraulic.

Around here we have what are called pole trucks. A steel bed, winch behind cab and two bars maybe fifteen feet long mounted to sides of bed about half way. they come together and have a pully there that a cable runs through.
one control runs the poles up and down and another pulls cable through the pully. You can pull/lift a lot.
They were used extensively in the oilfield industry and a few are still around.
Is it possible we are referring to the same thing?

if so,i have one.nicest bed and set up ou will find winch worked perfect when truck was parked..20 years ago.truck is scrap the rest is nice.

Ok here goes I haven't  used one in 50 years . Most were pto driven  rear dif from a truck with mechanical brakes a cable drum was welded to one drum the cable ran up the mast and out the boom thru sheves . When you wanted to hoist you pulled a rope that was hooked to the brake opposed the cable drum . The other rope was hooked to the brake on the drum to hold while pulled the log back to the center of the truck . Also there were 2 chains on the boom that would center the boom when hoisted . Hope this clears up part of the mystry  Gearbox
A bunch of chainsaws a BT6870 processer , TC 5 International track skidder and not near enough time

I think I can picture it. Interesting setup to say the least but I can just imagine what the compensation board would have to say. :D
