Stihl 010/011av evolution

So ive limped my 010av along for long enough.   Perhaps i can get an oil pump for it,  but perhaps its time to finally get a new limb saw for around the farm.



Except......  I hate most of the new saws.

The closest I can find today is a MS200 (not T) at 35cc


I guess along the way they made the MS191 with an impressive 46cc displacement

Did they make a non-top handle version of that?

at some point along comes the ms192 and ..... we get a pathetic 30cc


for referance my 010av is 37cc and the 011 (the sister) is 41cc

what do you call the above type design?  Transverse engine?  were the plug is at the back laying down, exhaust in the rear right side not in the front,

Ive used my 010 for 20 years,  your not going to convince me that a non-"transverse" saw has better balance for a limb saw.

SO whats out there today?  I really dont want to give up my 35-40cc saw.    To me its perfect sweet spot for a small limb saw before you step up to 70-80cc for large cutting

Don't get hung up on CC's. The MS200 will cut so much faster than the 010 you will need to be careful until you get used to it. Especially the top handle where you don't have much leverage.

If your 010 oil pump is going out, the 1120 family (010, 009, 009L, 011 and 012) are all modular and parts are interchangeable. Any oil pump from any of the 1120's would plug right in, later ones have a pushbutton to prime the pump. Neat thing about the oil pump is that it works off of crankcase pressure change and the only thing that moves is the diaphragm and its plunger. Bad thing is the foam filter may deteriorate and bits come loose and may gum up things.

There is a basic difference between this 1120 family and MS200 and MS192. The 1120's are reed-valve case-port with a compact top-set carburetor arrangement and a crossover exhaust. The MS200 and MS192 are piston port.

The MS191 is reed-valve case-port, but the carburetor and still-air manifold hang off the front and draw air through a tube from the handle box at the back. Kinda more complicated, rangy and front heavy than the 1120's compact carb set-up.

As you might have guessed, I like, build and use a lot  these little saws. The 009L is my favorite small saw (have a few).

Solo,  thanks for the info!  you got any idea on the manufacture dates for the various saws?  like was the 191 only around for like 5 years making it hard to find etc?

I knew the 009,10,11 were all in the same family.   I owned a very early 009 that i loved and it developed ignition issues and i never got it tore down far enough to replace the ignition unit/spark plug wire.   I set it on a shelf in a case and said ill come back to it.   10 years later it was stolen for scrap  :(

I have a good friend who has a 011 and was borrowing his for the past few days.   I noticed his has the upgraded oil pump with primer bulb.   

I took mine apart this afternoon and while the diaphram looked ok to the eye, when i held it up to the sun, i could see light through it so after 30 years it finnally bit the dust.

Off to search the interwebs for a new oil pump.

For a really good limbing saw, if you're not hung up on stihl, try a Dolmar 421- a sweet little screamer, and a great value. IMO

I wouldn't say i HAVE to have another stihl.... but the dolmar looks like a standard saw....  eg a non-transverse (i guess ill continue to use that untill otherwise corrected) setup at which point i could choose any of the 35-40cc saws out there...

As for displacement....  There is no replacement.....    I run full chisel chain and rely on the torque to pull the chain through a log.   Others may like their 14K rpm skip tooth saftychain dust makers,  Ill stick with my 40cc 10lb saw.

You can clearly see were power wars (90's) increasingly larger displacements) was the key vs today's "make it as cheep as possible" which mostly results in a loss of displacement.

Yeah, there is a replacement for displacement.  I have had most of the saws on that list and several of some of them. The 009's 010's 011's are good old klunkers, but that is what they are. I usually keep one around myself because they suit my purposes OK. But, anybody who thinks they are even in the same universe as the MS200 or MS201 should probably run one of the latter for about ten seconds.

The little 011's are just a trim the apple tree in the backyard type of saw .No more no less .Fact I have one ,freebie that sets on the shelf .I mean they work but are nothing to write home about .

An 020 T or Ms 200 T will run circles around them and top handle or not aren't bad limbers .My little limber is an 024 supposedly with the exception of the 020/200 the smallest pro saw made during that time period .Light as a feather .

well  I guess i can put off my migrating to a modern saw a little longer.

Picked up an 011 off craigslist for $75.   IT was sold as a non-runner but only because the pull rope had issues.   Turns out the recoil spring was just gunky and didnt want to retract reliably.     Got that sorted out and will put some new fuel in it tomarrow and give it a go.   If nothing else i can rob the oiler out of it for my 010 which runs fine still.

I suppose i can keep an eye on CL for a newer ms200 as everyone says it will run circles around my 30 yo saw ;)

Just for curiosity I looked up the 011 on flea bay .Parts are usually cheap but I found one exception .

It seems one seller either entered the wrong price or had dillussions of granduer listing a throttle control cable for an 011 AV, the orange one for $118 .That was an 18 dollar item the last I bought one, maybe 4 years ago .--Ya gotta watch them ----

The last 011 I sold on eBay only brought $86 . And, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it and had a good bar and chain. And, you lose 10% in fees. Pretty sure I lost money on shipping.

 :D Flea bay can be amusing on some of the prices ,say this 011 .You might find a runner for 50 bucks complete yet somebody else thinks they are worth $250 .

They brag up the 200T's and try to get a grand out of them .Yet my bud the tree trimmer has stock piled a half dozen of them in the 250-275 price range .< Why because the two 201's he has do not even come close to a 200T which of course half the people say they are better .Opinions ,no more no less .Like the oil wars I'll cast my vote for the 200 .

Yeah, you have to do a little work on the 201's to make them run with the 200's.  EPA, I suppose.
