I have a question.

On the end of railroad ties they drive in an "S" shape piece of metal to help with the tie checking.

What are these called and where can you get them?

Our tie buyer uses the flat nail plate on the ends which has replaced the S Cleat.  LINK

Search for s-irons. I think you will find several suppliers.

They (whoever they is) make a plastic one that looks like a capital I. The last load of walnut I bought had them in the ends; you just saw through them.
