Looking for Non lumber Oak, Maple, Cherry, Walnut Logs
« on: August 12, 2017, 11:42:26 AM »
I want to start splitting firewood again but since I now live inside the city limits of Duluth mn, I can't just go knock down a tree and process it myself.

Anybody out there have a few logs they'd be willing to sell? Not saw logs, just a few 8'-12' logs I can block and split myself.

I hate the idea of going to a gym to workout when I can get a better workout at home and keep my family warm at the same time.

Paul,

You know what I mean though, stuff that you can't sell to the mill. My dad used to buy a truck load of it every year and the logger seemed all to happy to sell my dad a trailer full of logs he couldn't sell because of knots, rot, pitch, etc.

I have a feeling the guys on the landing used to say "Just throw it in Erics pile, he'll buy it.... then make his kid split it...."

Can you get some from a tree service?  Around here in metro areas they have to pay to dispose of tree trunks or have long hauls.  Not sure about MN though.  I would expect there is a higher demand for firewood there than here.

And then there is craigslist.   ;)
Lucas 6-13+slabber, Mr. Sawmill bandmill, orange chainsaws, JD SSL, Case Backhoe, farm tractors, trailers, and 150ish acres of trees.  Fledgling woodshop with CNC router, laser engraver, Woodmaster 712, and a Berlin 108 moulder (project).  Oh, and a lovely (patient) wife and four offbearers.

I guess I really don't care where I get the wood from, honestly I would like to support a local logger by buying stuff the mill wont but since I would be only dealing with a couple logs at a time I can see where that market might now exist or be serviced.

I sent some calls to tree services so I guess we shall see what happens.

I don't know how it works up there, but here in Georgia builders and developers(that is what I do) send trees from land clearing to the land fill.

On large tracts we sell the pine trees to a logger.

Hardwoods either get burned(if the location allows), ran through a grinder or hauled to the land fill.

I'm clearing a small parcel right now. I'm going to use the big pine to saw some beams and save the black walnut. I may try to save a couple large oak trunks to mill some hardwood floors, but everything else goes to the land fill(no burning in Athens).

Every now and then we will split some hickory or pecan for firewood/smoking wood.

It's a shame how much excellent timber goes to waste.
